Chapter 6: Nora’s Hidden Files
June led Adrian to a storage unit on the south side of Providence.
Nora had rented it under a false name three months before her death.
She gave June the key and told her to open it only if something happened.
June had been too afraid.
Now fear was no longer enough to keep the door closed.
Inside were sixteen archive boxes, maps of Blackwater Lake, copies of Vale trust documents, and photographs of people connected to Rosemere.
One wall displayed a timeline.
Eleanor’s confinement.
Nora’s birth.
The Blackwater fire.
Malcolm’s death.
Gideon’s secret visits to Eleanor.
Victor’s rise inside Vale Group.
At the center of the wall was a photograph of Ethan Cross.
Beneath it, Nora had written:
SOPHIE’S FATHER—DOES HE KNOW?
June stared at the words.
“She never told me.”
Adrian opened a folder.
Ethan Cross had worked as a private investigator nine years earlier.
Nora hired him to help locate records connected to Eleanor.
Their professional relationship became personal.
Sophie was conceived during that period.
According to Nora’s notes, Ethan disappeared before she could tell him she was pregnant.
Months later, she discovered he had accepted money from Gideon Shaw.
“He betrayed her,” June said.
“Or Gideon removed him.”
They found copies of bank transfers.
Gideon paid Ethan two hundred thousand dollars.
The final transfer occurred eight years earlier, one week before Sophie’s birth.
Another folder contained surveillance photographs of Ethan meeting Victor within the last six months.
Adrian understood.
Ethan was Sophie’s biological father.
He had also been paid to stay away.
Now Victor had brought him back.
Sophie’s custody claim was legally dangerous because the relationship was real.
June found Nora’s laptop inside a locked cabinet.
The password hint read:
THE MOON FOUND HOME.
Sophie’s pearl showed a crescent moon.
Adrian entered Eleanor’s birth date.
The computer opened.
Nora had recorded a final video.
She sat inside her apartment wearing the coat found after her car crash.
“If you are watching this,” she said, “I was unable to finish what my mother began.”
She explained that Eleanor had spent decades collecting evidence against Gideon.
Gideon used Malcolm’s fear of scandal to redirect family assets into private accounts.
After the Blackwater fire, he told Malcolm that Eleanor and Nora were dead.
Years later, Gideon discovered they had survived.
He threatened to expose their location unless Eleanor signed documents allowing him to manipulate the trust.
Nora learned the truth after Malcolm’s death.
She began restoring the original records.
Then Victor contacted her.
“He told me Adrian was the real danger,” Nora said. “He claimed Adrian would kill Sophie before allowing Eleanor’s descendant to control the company.”
Adrian looked away from the screen.
Nora continued.
“I almost believed him. Then I discovered Victor and Gideon were fighting over the same secret.”
She held up a ledger.
“The original trust amendment is not at Rosemere. My mother hid it in the Blackwater chapel before the fire.”
The video changed.
Nora appeared frightened.
“Ethan contacted me. He said he wanted to meet Sophie. I agreed. Then he demanded money.”
June cursed under her breath.
“Nora refused,” the recording continued. “Ethan said Victor had offered him something better than money: custody, influence, and control of Sophie’s inheritance.”
Nora looked directly into the camera.
“If I die, do not let Ethan take her.”
The video ended.
June sat heavily on a box.
“Nora knew.”
“She knew someone was coming,” Adrian said.
A sound came from outside the unit.
A vehicle door closed.
Adrian turned off the lights.
Footsteps approached.
The storage door rattled.
June whispered, “Did anyone follow us?”
“No.”
Metal scraped against metal.
Someone poured liquid beneath the door.
The smell of gasoline filled the unit.
Adrian grabbed Nora’s laptop and the most important files.
“Back wall.”
They searched for another exit.
The gasoline ignited.
Fire raced across the floor.
June covered her face.
Adrian found a maintenance panel behind stacked boxes.
He kicked it open.
A narrow passage led into the neighboring unit.
They crawled through as flames consumed Nora’s records.
Adrian called security and emergency services.
By the time firefighters arrived, the storage unit had collapsed.
Most of the evidence was destroyed.
But Nora’s laptop survived.
Security footage showed Ethan Cross entering the building thirty minutes earlier.
Police issued a warrant.
Ethan disappeared.
That evening, Adrian returned to Rosemere.
Sophie waited on the staircase.
“Did you find my father?”
Adrian did not want to lie.
“Yes.”
“Is he really my dad?”
“Biologically, probably.”
“Why did Mom say he was dead?”
“Because he hurt her.”
Sophie looked down.
“Does he want me?”
Adrian struggled with the answer.
“He wants something connected to you.”
“That means no.”
Adrian sat beside her.
“A parent wanting something from you is not the same as wanting you.”
Sophie leaned against his arm.
“Did Grandma want you?”
He looked toward Eleanor’s portrait.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she come back?”
“Because she was afraid that returning would put Nora in danger.”
Sophie thought for a moment.
“She stayed away because she loved her?”
“Yes.”
“That sounds lonely.”
“It was.”
A guard entered carrying a package delivered to the gates.
Inside was one of the stolen pearls.
It was covered in blood.
A note had been wrapped around it.
BRING SOPHIE TO BLACKWATER LAKE OR THE NEXT PEARL COMES WITH A BODY.
A photograph lay beneath the note.
