Chapter 11: The Missing Heir

Rosemere’s security cameras showed a delivery van entering through the eastern gate.

The driver used credentials issued by the Vale Foundation.

Inside the mansion, a woman dressed as a nurse entered Sophie’s room.

Sophie appeared to recognize her.

She followed without resistance.

June stared at the footage.

“That’s Miriam Cole.”

Adrian turned.

“The nurse from Eleanor’s journal?”

June nodded slowly.

Miriam had helped Eleanor hide Nora.

She would now be nearly eighty.

The woman in the video appeared younger, perhaps fifty.

“Her daughter,” June said. “Rachel Cole.”

Nora’s files contained photographs of Rachel.

She had helped Nora investigate the family records.

Adrian called the number listed.

Disconnected.

Keane traced the delivery van.

It left Providence heading west toward Blackwater County.

Victor had used someone Sophie trusted.

Adrian felt the guilt like physical pressure.

He had promised Eleanor through the letter that Sophie would be safe.

Now the child had been taken from a bedroom inside her own house.

Celeste entered the security room.

“My father has a lodge near the Canadian border.”

“Why was it not listed among his properties?”

“It belongs to my mother’s family.”

“Would he take Sophie there?”

“He used it when he wanted meetings hidden from the board.”

Adrian assembled federal agents and private security.

Celeste insisted on joining.

“No.”

“He will speak to me.”

“He may kill you.”

“He already tried to make me part of Sophie’s murder.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You are not responsible for stopping him.”

“I spent years enjoying everything his crimes paid for.”

“You did not know.”

“I knew he was cruel. I simply assumed it would never turn toward me.”

That honesty convinced Adrian.

They traveled through the night.

Sophie woke inside a moving vehicle with a blanket over her legs.

Rachel Cole drove.

“Where are we going?”

“To see someone who can explain your grandmother.”

“Victor?”

Rachel glanced at her.

“You should not know that name.”

“He killed my mom.”

Rachel’s hands tightened around the wheel.

“He said Adrian killed Nora.”

“He lied.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he admitted it.”

Rachel looked frightened.

Victor had told her Adrian wanted to destroy Eleanor’s evidence and control Sophie.

He claimed he was taking Sophie to protect her.

Sophie realized Rachel believed she was rescuing her.

“My grandmother trusted your mother,” Sophie said.

“Yes.”

“Would your mother trust the man who worked with Gideon?”

Rachel did not answer.

“My grandmother left a letter for Adrian. She didn’t leave one for Victor.”

The vehicle slowed.

Rachel’s doubt became visible.

At a gas station, Rachel entered the restroom with Sophie.

“Did Victor really kill Nora?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have proof?”

“Celeste recorded him.”

Rachel leaned against the sink.

For years, Victor had sent money to support Miriam Cole’s medical treatment.

Rachel interpreted it as gratitude for protecting Eleanor.

Now she wondered whether it had been payment for silence.

She took out her phone.

Before she could call police, Victor entered.

He struck Rachel and pulled Sophie from the restroom.

“You were told not to stop.”

“She knows what you did.”

“She is eight.”

“She knows enough.”

Victor dragged Sophie toward another vehicle.

Sophie kicked his leg.

He tightened his grip.

“Stop fighting.”

“My mom fought you.”

His face changed.

“Your mother should have accepted the settlement.”

“You killed her because she said no.”

Victor shoved Sophie into the back seat.

Rachel crawled from the restroom and activated a silent emergency alarm.

Victor drove north.

Federal agents received the gas-station footage.

Adrian saw Victor forcing Sophie into the car.

His control disappeared.

“I will kill him.”

Celeste sat across from him inside the command vehicle.

“That is what he wants.”

Adrian looked at her.

“He wants you angry enough to make a mistake. He has spent his life studying this family.”

“He has Sophie.”

“And Sophie is smarter than he thinks.”

At the lodge, Victor locked Sophie inside an upstairs bedroom.

The room overlooked a frozen lake.

On the table lay the twenty-three stolen pearls.

Victor placed the final pearl beside them.

“You could own more than most adults ever imagine.”

Sophie looked at him.

“I don’t want it.”

“Everyone wants power.”

“Grandma didn’t.”

“She spent thirty years hiding because she had none.”

“She had my mom.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Your grandmother destroyed this family.”

“No. Your family hurt her.”

“This is your family too.”

Sophie shook her head.

“Adrian is my family. June is my family. Grandma was my family.”

“And your father?”

“He chose money.”

Victor arranged the pearls according to their engraved sequence.

He wanted Sophie to unlock a portable case containing the final film.

The case used Eleanor’s fingerprint pattern and a sequence known only through her journal.

Victor had the pearls but not the order.

“You will tell me the code.”

“No.”

Victor walked toward the door.

“Then you will remain here until you do.”

After he left, Sophie examined the pearls.

Her grandmother had taught her the moon sequence as a bedtime game.

Sophie knew the code.

But she also remembered another lesson.

When someone wants the truth for the wrong reason, give them a door that opens somewhere else.

Sophie rearranged the pearls into a false sequence.

When Victor returned, she told him she was ready.

The case opened.

Inside was not a film.

It contained a recording device activated by the incorrect code.

Eleanor’s voice played.

“Victor, if you are hearing this, then you have repeated your father’s mistake.”

Victor froze.

The recording continued.

“You believed the pearls protected evidence. They were designed to expose whoever tried to steal it.”

A red light began blinking.

The case transmitted its location directly to federal authorities.

Victor threw it against the wall.

Outside, helicopters approached the lake.

He grabbed Sophie.

“If I lose everything, so do you.”

Then he pulled her toward the frozen water.
