CHAPTER 8: The Truth Hidden in Maya’s Birth Certificate

The Blackwell mansion had become a battlefield.

Not with weapons.

Not with soldiers.

But with secrets.

And everyone knew the first person to reveal the truth would control the future.

Arthur Blackwell sat in his office, surrounded by documents, reports, and evidence collected over the past twenty-four hours.

The Sterling family had spent twenty years hiding their crimes.

Now Arthur was determined to expose every single one.

But there was one thing he couldn’t understand.

Why was Richard Sterling so confident?

Why wasn’t he afraid of being exposed?

People who carried dark secrets usually feared the truth.

But Richard…

Richard looked like a man who had already prepared for war.

And that frightened Arthur.

Daniel entered the office carrying a folder.

“Mr. Blackwell.”

Arthur looked up.

“What did you find?”

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

“The Sterling investigation.”

Arthur opened it.

“Go on.”

“Richard Sterling has connections with several legal firms, private investigators, and media companies.”

Arthur frowned.

“He built a protection network.”

“Yes.”

Daniel hesitated.

“But there’s something else.”

Arthur looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel placed another document down.

“A birth certificate.”

Arthur picked it up.

His eyes narrowed.

“Maya Collins?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Arthur read the information.

Mother:

Lily Collins.

Father:

Unknown.

Arthur looked confused.

“Unknown?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why I investigated further.”

He placed another paper on top.

“This birth certificate was changed.”

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“When?”

“Six months after Maya was born.”

Arthur stared at the document.

Someone had altered a child’s identity.

Again.

The same thing that happened to Lily.

The same thing that happened to Victoria.

The Sterling family erased people who threatened them.

Meanwhile…

Lily sat with Maya in the servant quarters.

The little girl was unusually quiet.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Is Mr. Blackwell angry with me?”

Lily’s heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Then why is everyone talking about me?”

Lily reached out and held her hand.

“Because sometimes adults create problems that children have to carry.”

Maya looked confused.

“Did I do something wrong?”

“No.”

Lily answered immediately.

“You did nothing wrong.”

A pause.

“Never believe anyone who tells you that.”

Maya looked at her mother.

“Then why did Mrs. Blackwell hate us?”

Lily had no answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

Victoria had loved her once.

Then she had lost herself.

That evening, Victoria returned to the mansion again.

But this time…

She didn’t come to fight.

She came to confess.

Arthur found her sitting in the old room.

The room where twenty years of pain had been hidden.

“You knew about Maya’s birth records.”

Victoria looked up.

“Yes.”

“Why was her father listed as unknown?”

Victoria looked away.

“Because Richard made sure Daniel’s name disappeared.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because if anyone discovered Daniel had a child…”

She paused.

“The Sterling family would lose everything.”

Arthur stared.

“You protected this secret for twenty years.”

Victoria nodded.

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid enough to let Lily suffer?”

The words hurt.

But Victoria didn’t argue.

“Yes.”

A long silence.

“I was a coward.”

Arthur had expected excuses.

Denial.

Anger.

But not this.

Not an admission.

Victoria continued.

“When Daniel died, Lily was pregnant.”

Arthur froze.

“What?”

Victoria looked at him.

“She didn’t know at first.”

“When did she find out?”

“Two months later.”

Arthur slowly understood.

“Maya.”

Victoria nodded.

“Maya was born after Daniel’s death.”

Arthur looked at the documents again.

“So Richard erased Daniel’s name.”

“Yes.”

“And forced Lily to hide?”

“Yes.”

Arthur clenched his fists.

A child had been born into a war she never chose.

Suddenly…

The mansion security alarm activated.

Everyone froze.

Arthur immediately stood.

“What happened?”

Daniel’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mr. Blackwell…”

“What is it?”

“Someone entered the property.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then Daniel answered:

“Richard Sterling.”

The mansion doors opened.

Richard Sterling walked inside like he owned the place.

Because for most of his life…

He believed he did.

Arthur approached him.

“You’re not welcome here.”

Richard smiled.

“That’s interesting.”

He looked around.

“Because for twenty years, my family helped create this world for you.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“You came here to threaten me?”

“No.”

Richard looked toward Victoria.

“I came here to end this.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Father.”

Richard looked at her.

“Still protecting them?”

Her face turned cold.

“You destroyed everything.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“She destroyed everything.”

Everyone froze.

Lily’s expression changed.

“What?”

Richard slowly walked closer.

“You still haven’t told Arthur the truth?”

Arthur looked at Lily.

“What truth?”

Lily’s face became pale.

Richard smiled.

“Tell him.”

Silence.

“Tell him who Maya really is.”

Arthur’s heartbeat increased.

He looked at Lily.

“Lily?”

She couldn’t speak.

Richard continued.

“Maya is not only Daniel Sterling’s daughter.”

A pause.

“She is also the legal heir to the Sterling fortune.”

The room went silent.

Arthur stared.

“What?”

Richard smiled.

“That little girl you all thought was a servant’s daughter…”

He looked toward Maya.

“Is the rightful owner of everything my family built.”

Maya stood frozen.

She didn’t understand.

But everyone else did.

If Maya was the legal heir…

Then Richard Sterling’s empire had a problem.

Because the person they tried to erase…

Was the person who could take everything from them.

Victoria looked at Richard with horror.

“You knew?”

Richard smiled.

“I knew from the beginning.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“You hid an heir.”

Richard shrugged.

“She was a mistake that needed to disappear.”

Those words changed something inside Arthur.

The billionaire who had remained calm through every attack…

Finally lost his patience.

“You call a child a mistake?”

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.”

Arthur’s voice became cold.

“Then you made your biggest mistake.”

Richard smiled.

“Careful, Arthur.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Because before you try to save Maya…”

He tapped the folder.

“You should see what her birth certificate really says.”

Arthur opened it.

And the final line made his blood run cold.

Father: Daniel Sterling.

Mother: Lily Collins.

But below it…

A handwritten note.

Added years later.

A note that changed everything.

"The child was not born from Lily Collins."

Arthur looked up.

Confused.

Terrified.

“What does this mean?”

Richard smiled.

“Ask Victoria.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria went pale.

Because she knew.

The secret she had hidden for twenty years…

May you like

Was finally coming out.

TO BE CONTINUED…
