CHAPTER 13: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For twenty years, Arthur Blackwell believed he was an only child.

He believed his younger brother Thomas had died in a tragic accident.

He believed his father had spent his final years carrying the pain of losing a son.

He believed the Blackwell family had already buried its darkest chapter.

But now…

Everything he believed was collapsing.

Because the dead man had left a message.

Thomas Blackwell was alive.

Arthur sat alone in his office, staring at the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father’s.

The man who taught him never to lie.

The man who built the Blackwell empire.

The man who was now revealed to have hidden the biggest secret of all.

Arthur read the final lines again.

“Thomas is alive.”

“He is the only person who knows why Maya was hidden.”

His hands tightened around the paper.

“Why would you do this, Father?”

For the first time in years…

Arthur felt betrayed.

Not by an enemy.

Not by a competitor.

By his own family.

The next morning, Arthur gathered everyone in the mansion.

Victoria.

Lily.

Daniel.

Even Maya.

They all sat in silence.

Arthur placed the letter on the table.

“There is something you need to know.”

Victoria looked at him.

“What happened?”

Arthur took a breath.

“My father lied about Thomas.”

Victoria frowned.

“Your brother?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Thomas Blackwell is alive.”

The room went silent.

Lily looked shocked.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Arthur looked at the letter.

“But someone has been protecting his secret for twenty years.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Thomas knew about Maya?”

Arthur nodded.

“He may know everything.”

Maya sat quietly.

She looked between the adults.

“Who is Thomas?”

Arthur softened his voice.

“Someone who might have answers.”

“About me?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Yes.”

Maya looked down.

She was tired.

Tired of being a mystery.

Tired of adults deciding her life.

“I don’t want to be a secret anymore.”

Those words hit everyone.

Especially Victoria.

Because they were the same words she wished she had heard twenty years earlier.

Meanwhile…

In a hidden apartment across the city…

The man known as Thomas Blackwell watched the news.

The screen showed Maya.

The child connected to two powerful families.

The child everyone wanted to control.

Thomas reached for an old photograph.

A young Arthur.

A young Thomas.

And their father standing between them.

“We were children.”

He whispered.

“We trusted him.”

His expression darkened.

“But he chose power.”

A knock came at the door.

Thomas immediately became alert.

“Who is it?”

A voice answered.

“Someone who wants the truth.”

Thomas opened the door.

And froze.

It was Daniel.

Arthur’s assistant.

Thomas stared.

“How did you find me?”

Daniel looked serious.

“Because Mr. Blackwell wasn’t the only one searching.”

Thomas studied him.

“You work for Arthur.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel handed him a folder.

“Because I know what your family did.”

Thomas looked at the folder.

Inside were copies of the Sterling investigation.

Thomas sighed.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then tell me.”

A long silence.

Finally Thomas said:

“Twenty years ago…”

He looked toward the window.

“The Blackwell and Sterling families made a deal.”

Back at the mansion…

Arthur confronted Victoria.

“You knew Thomas existed.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“No.”

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my family was involved.”

Victoria looked away.

“Arthur…”

“Answer me.”

She remained silent.

And that silence told him everything.

“How much did you know?”

Victoria whispered:

“Not enough.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t helping Richard hide Maya.”

Arthur froze.

“What?”

“He was trying to expose him.”

Arthur stared.

“Then why did he hide the truth?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Because he discovered something worse.”

“What?”

Victoria looked toward Maya.

“He discovered Maya wasn’t the only child Richard wanted erased.”

Arthur frowned.

“What?”

Victoria took a deep breath.

“Richard had another secret.”

Twenty years earlier…

Richard Sterling’s empire was not built only on money.

It was built on control.

He controlled companies.

Politicians.

Lawyers.

Even families.

But one person refused to obey him.

Daniel Sterling.

Daniel discovered financial crimes inside the Sterling empire.

He planned to expose his own father.

Richard could not allow that.

So he created a plan.

A plan involving Victoria.

Lily.

Maya.

And the Blackwell family.

Thomas Blackwell discovered the truth.

He tried to help Daniel.

But Richard was faster.

He created a false accident.

A fake death.

And Thomas disappeared.

Not because he wanted to leave.

Because he was forced to.

That evening, Arthur received a message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

“If you want the truth, come alone.”

Below it was an address.

Arthur knew immediately.

Thomas.

He drove there without telling anyone.

The old abandoned warehouse was empty.

Until a voice spoke behind him.

“You look just like Father.”

Arthur turned.

A man stood in the shadows.

Older.

Scarred.

But unmistakable.

“Thomas.”

The man smiled sadly.

“Hello, Arthur.”

For a moment…

Neither brother moved.

Twenty years of pain stood between them.

Finally Arthur spoke.

“You’re alive.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because someone had to survive long enough to tell the truth.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Tell me everything.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Before I do…”

He handed Arthur a file.

“What is this?”

“The original records from the hospital.”

Arthur opened it.

His face changed.

“What?”

Thomas whispered:

“Your father didn’t just know Maya.”

A pause.

“He was there when she was born.”

Arthur stared.

“And?”

Thomas looked directly into his eyes.

“He made a promise to Victoria.”

“What promise?”

Thomas answered:

“To protect Maya…”

“And destroy anyone who tried to take her.”

Arthur felt the ground disappear beneath him.

His father wasn’t just a witness.

He was part of the story.

But why?

Why would he protect Victoria’s child?

Why would he hide the truth from his own son?

Thomas looked at him.

“There’s one more thing.”

Arthur looked up.

“What?”

Thomas handed him another photograph.

Arthur took it.

And his heart stopped.

The picture showed his father holding baby Maya.

But standing beside him…

Was a woman Arthur recognized.

His own mother.

The woman who died when he was young.

Thomas whispered:

“Your parents knew Maya before you did.”

Arthur stared at the photograph.

Another impossible truth.

Another family secret.

Because Maya’s story didn’t begin with Victoria.

It began with the Blackwells.

And now Arthur had to uncover why his own parents fought to protect a child who was never supposed to exist.
