CHAPTER 16: The Betrayal Inside the Blackwell Mansion

The document sat on Arthur Blackwell’s desk.
A single piece of paper.
A forged signature.
A fake authorization.
But the damage it represented was far greater than ink on paper.
Because someone inside his own home…
Someone he trusted…
Had betrayed him.
Arthur stared at the document for several minutes.
His mind replayed every conversation.
Every person who had access to his private files.
Every person who knew his signature.
And one question kept returning:
Who would betray him?
The mansion felt different that morning.
Not because anything had changed physically.
The walls were the same.
The furniture was the same.
The people were the same.
But Arthur no longer saw it as a safe place.
He saw it as a place where secrets were hiding.
Where someone had been watching.
Waiting.
Planning.
Daniel entered the office.
“Mr. Blackwell.”
Arthur didn’t look up.
“Close the door.”
Daniel immediately noticed something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Arthur pushed the document across the desk.
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
“This…”
“Yes.”
“This is the petition to remove Maya from the Sterling inheritance.”
Arthur nodded.
“And my signature.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“But you never approved this.”
“No.”
“Then someone forged it.”
Arthur leaned back.
“That means someone had access to my private documents.”
Daniel became serious.
“Only a few people.”
“Exactly.”
Arthur picked up a list.
The names of people with access.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Family members.
Employees.
Then one name caught his attention.
A name he never expected.
Evelyn Blackwell.
His aunt.
His father’s sister.
The woman who had raised him after his mother died.
The woman who always told him:
“Family protects family.”
Arthur stared at the name.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Sir?”
“She wouldn’t.”
Daniel stayed silent.
Because in his years working with Arthur, he had learned something.
The people closest to you were often the ones who could hurt you the most.
Meanwhile…
At the Sterling mansion, Richard received a report.
“Everything is moving according to plan.”
Richard smiled.
“Good.”
Sebastian looked at him.
“But Arthur found Adrian.”
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
“Adrian always was a problem.”
“He could expose everything.”
Richard walked toward the window.
“No.”
A pause.
“He can expose whatever he wants.”
Sebastian frowned.
“Why aren’t you worried?”
Richard smiled.
“Because truth only matters when people believe it.”
Back at the Blackwell mansion…
Maya sat in the library with Lily.
She was holding an old photograph.
A picture of herself as a baby.
“I don’t remember any of this.”
Lily sat beside her.
“That’s because you were too young.”
Maya looked at her.
“Was I happy?”
The question made Lily emotional.
“Yes.”
“Was my mother there?”
Lily looked toward Victoria.
Who stood quietly at the doorway.
Victoria answered:
“Yes.”
Maya looked surprised.
Victoria stepped closer.
“I was.”
A pause.
“Even when I couldn’t be beside you…”
Her voice broke.
“I watched you.”
Maya looked down.
“Why didn’t you come?”
Victoria swallowed.
“Because I was afraid.”
Maya looked at her.
“Are you still afraid?”
Victoria thought for a moment.
Then shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
Victoria looked at Lily.
Then Arthur.
“Because I finally have people who will fight with me.”
That evening…
Arthur called everyone into the main hall.
Victoria.
Lily.
Daniel.
And the Blackwell family members.
Including Evelyn.
The moment Evelyn entered…
Arthur noticed something.
She looked nervous.
Too nervous.
“Arthur.”
Her voice was calm.
“You called?”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
He placed the forged document on the table.
“I found something interesting.”
Evelyn glanced at it.
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But Arthur saw it.
“You recognize it.”
Evelyn looked away.
“What are you talking about?”
Arthur stepped closer.
“The document removing Maya from the Sterling inheritance.”
Silence.
“I never approved this.”
Evelyn remained quiet.
Arthur’s voice hardened.
“So someone forged my signature.”
Everyone looked around.
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn sighed.
A sound filled with exhaustion.
“You shouldn’t have found this.”
Arthur froze.
“Found this?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.”
Not denial.
Not surprise.
Acceptance.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Mrs. Blackwell…”
Arthur raised his hand.
Stopping him.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You really don’t know?”
“Know what?”
She laughed sadly.
“Your father spent his entire life trying to protect you from this family.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“My family?”
Evelyn nodded.
“The Blackwells were not innocent.”
The room went silent.
Arthur stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“I’m saying your father made mistakes.”
“What mistakes?”
“Powerful people always do.”
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“Answer me.”
Evelyn looked down.
“Your father and Richard Sterling made a deal twenty years ago.”
Victoria immediately reacted.
“No.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Yes.”
Arthur turned.
“What deal?”
Evelyn continued.
“A deal to control the inheritance of both families.”
Arthur felt betrayed.
“My father would never.”
Evelyn looked at him sadly.
“Your father was a good man.”
A pause.
“But good men can still make terrible choices.”
Arthur stepped back.
“What was the deal?”
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“If Maya survived…”
Everyone listened.
“She would inherit everything.”
Arthur frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like a bad thing.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
She looked at him.
“The inheritance wasn’t just money.”
“What was it?”
“Control.”
Silence.
“The person who controlled Maya’s inheritance would control both empires.”
Arthur finally understood.
This was never about protecting Maya.
It was about controlling her.
Every family.
Every person.
Every secret.
They all wanted something from her.
Except him.
Except Lily.
Except maybe Victoria.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
“Did you forge the document?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The confession shocked everyone.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why?”
Evelyn answered quietly:
“Because I was trying to protect Arthur.”
Arthur stared.
“By stealing Maya’s future?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“No.”
A pause.
“By stopping Richard before he destroyed you.”
Arthur was confused.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked terrified.
“Because Richard’s plan was never to remove Maya from the inheritance.”
“Then what?”
Evelyn whispered:
“He wants Maya to inherit everything.”
Everyone froze.
Arthur frowned.
“Why would he want that?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because after she inherits…”
A pause.
“He plans to take control of her as her legal guardian.”
The room went cold.
Richard wasn’t trying to destroy Maya.
He was trying to own her.
A child.
An heir.
A living key to two empires.
At that moment, Arthur’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Richard’s voice came through.
“Arthur.”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“What do you want?”
Richard laughed.
“You finally understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That Maya is not a person to me.”
A pause.
“She is the future of everything.”
Arthur’s grip tightened.
“You will never get near her.”
Richard smiled.
“We’ll see.”
Then came the words that made Arthur freeze.
“Because the court hearing begins tomorrow.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“What court hearing?”
Richard replied:
“The one where I prove you are unfit to protect Maya.”
The call ended.
Arthur looked around the room.
Everyone was silent.
Tomorrow…
The battle would move from secrets…
To the courtroom.
And Richard Sterling had prepared his final weapon.
May you like
A legal attack that could take Maya away forever.
