Chapter 9: The War Belongs to Her

The silence that followed was worse than the gunfire.

Every police officer in the Obsidian lobby stood frozen.

Weapons lowered.

Hands rigid.

Eyes fixed on the screens.

The final words remained illuminated above them.

WELCOME, ISABELLA MORETTI.

Evelyn stared at the name.

It felt wrong.

Foreign.

Like someone else's life had been pasted over hers.

Then the pendant in her palm went cold.

The screens changed.

A legal document appeared.

Names.

Properties.

Corporations.

Bank accounts.

Political foundations.

Private security companies.

Hotels.

Shipping firms.

Construction companies.

Even the Obsidian.

Everything connected to the Moretti-Bell empire appeared in a cascading list.

At the bottom was a single sentence.

BENEFICIAL OWNER: ISABELLA MARIA MORETTI.

Evelyn's knees weakened.

“No.”

Lorenzo caught her elbow.

“Stay with me.”

“I don't understand.”

“You don't need to understand yet.”

“I own this?”

“Apparently.”

“I don't want it.”

Lorenzo looked at the screens.

“That's irrelevant.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever built this system doesn't care what you want.”

A voice came through the lobby speakers.

Calm.

Male.

Familiar.

“Actually, she does.”

Evelyn looked up.

Every screen went black.

Then one face appeared.

Vincent Bell.

He was sitting in a dark room somewhere high above Chicago.

No helicopter.

No guards.

No visible weapons.

Just a black suit and an expression of complete confidence.

“Good evening, Isabella.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You killed my mother.”

Vincent smiled.

“No.”

“You shot her.”

“I shot her.”

“That sounds like killing.”

“She survived.”

Evelyn's head snapped toward the staircase.

Her mother was still upstairs.

Alive.

Barely.

Vincent continued:

“I needed her alive long enough to complete the transfer.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You used her.”

“Yes.”

“You used Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“You used Gabriel.”

Vincent's smile faded.

“Gabriel chose his side.”

Lorenzo's eyes hardened.

“He's my brother.”

“He's my son.”

The words struck the lobby like another gunshot.

Lorenzo went still.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

“You're Gabriel's father?”

Vincent nodded.

“And yours.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“Then why did you let us believe you were dead?”

“Because dead men have more freedom than living ones.”

Lorenzo's voice became cold.

“You destroyed my family.”

Vincent smiled.

“No.”

“I did.”

“I destroyed the lie.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

The police commander stepped forward.

“You're under arrest.”

Vincent laughed.

The commander looked at his radio.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Static.

Vincent said:

“Commander, you aren't receiving orders because your orders no longer belong to you.”

The commander's face changed.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“She did.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I didn't do anything.”

“You inherited everything.”

“I don't want it.”

“You don't get to choose.”

“Then why are you talking to me?”

Vincent smiled.

“Because I want to give you a choice.”

Lorenzo stepped between them.

“No.”

Vincent ignored him.

“Come to me, Isabella.”

“No.”

“Give me the ledger.”

“I don't have it.”

“You do.”

“Where?”

“Inside your memory.”

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

“The river.”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

“What happened that night?”

Vincent's expression changed.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

“You remembered.”

“Pieces.”

“That is enough.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I will.”

“You killed my father.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your mother.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“She said you did.”

“She lied.”

“Why?”

“Because she needed you to hate me.”

“Why?”

“Because hatred makes people predictable.”

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

He was staring at the screen.

“Who was my father?”

Vincent answered:

“Vincent Bell.”

She shook her head.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone call Matteo my father?”

“Because Matteo was the man who raised you.”

“He didn't raise me.”

“No.”

Vincent's voice softened.

“He protected you.”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“From you?”

“From everyone.”

“Then why did he disappear?”

“Because your mother ordered him to.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

Vincent looked at him.

“You should ask your mother why she killed Matteo.”

Lorenzo's face went pale.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“She couldn't have.”

“She did.”

“Why?”

“Because Matteo tried to expose her.”

“Expose what?”

Vincent smiled.

“The original ledger.”

The lobby screens changed.

A photograph appeared.

Matteo Moretti.

Standing beside Evelyn's mother.

Both much younger.

Behind them stood a third person.

Vincent.

The three of them were smiling.

Evelyn stared.

“You worked together.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

“Your mother betrayed us.”

“Why?”

“Power.”

Vincent paused.

“She wanted the entire empire.”

“And you?”

“I wanted to destroy it.”

“Why?”

“Because my father built it.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Your father?”

Vincent nodded.

“Samuel Bell.”

Lorenzo looked at the screen.

“The Bell patriarch.”

“Yes.”

“The man who disappeared in 1998.”

“Another dead man.”

Vincent smiled.

“Chicago has a strange relationship with death.”

The commander suddenly raised his weapon.

He pointed it at Vincent's image.

“Enough.”

Vincent laughed.

“You still think the screen is where I am.”

The commander froze.

Every officer looked around.

A soft metallic click came from behind them.

The lobby doors locked.

Then the lights turned red.

Lorenzo looked toward the ceiling.

“Everyone down.”

Glass shattered.

Bullets tore through the lobby.

Lorenzo tackled Evelyn to the floor.

Police officers scattered.

Two security men returned fire.

The attack lasted less than twenty seconds.

Then silence.

Bodies lay across the marble.

Evelyn looked around.

The commander was wounded.

Three officers were dead.

Lorenzo was bleeding from his shoulder.

“Lorenzo.”

“I'm fine.”

“You're bleeding.”

“Later.”

He grabbed her hand.

“We're leaving.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere Vincent can't see us.”

A voice echoed from above.

“Too late.”

Gabriel stood on the mezzanine.

Weapon in hand.

Lorenzo raised his gun.

“Gabriel.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“Don't.”

“Put it down.”

“No.”

“You're working for him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Because he's the only person who ever told me the truth.”

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

“You think he cares about you?”

“He does.”

“He kidnapped you.”

“He saved me.”

“He took you from our family.”

“There was no family.”

Lorenzo flinched.

Gabriel continued:

“There was only a throne.”

“And you want it.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at Evelyn.

“She does.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't want any throne.”

Gabriel laughed.

“That's why you're dangerous.”

He raised his weapon.

Lorenzo moved in front of Evelyn.

Gabriel fired.

The bullet struck Lorenzo's vest.

He fell backward.

“Lorenzo!”

Evelyn caught him.

Gabriel lowered the gun.

“I didn't shoot to kill.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Why?”

“Because I need him.”

“For what?”

Gabriel smiled.

“For the second key.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“What second key?”

Gabriel tapped his chest.

“Me.”

He turned.

“Follow me.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked back.

“Then your mother dies.”

Evelyn froze.

He continued:

“And Daniel.”

Her face went white.

“You have them?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Below.”

Lorenzo slowly stood.

“You're bluffing.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Then stay here.”

He walked away.

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

“We have to follow him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it's a trap.”

“Everything tonight is a trap.”

“Exactly.”

She stared at him.

“Then what do we do?”

Lorenzo looked toward the elevators.

“We make our own.”

They moved through a service corridor.

The Obsidian had become a battlefield.

Smoke drifted through the halls.

Emergency lights flashed.

Every few seconds, Evelyn heard distant gunfire.

They reached the underground security center.

Lorenzo forced the door open.

Rows of monitors covered the walls.

He searched the screens.

“There.”

A camera showed Daniel.

Alive.

Bound.

Beside him sat Evelyn's mother.

Gabriel stood behind them.

Vincent was nowhere visible.

Lorenzo studied the footage.

“He's not there.”

“Who?”

“Vincent.”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

“Then where is he?”

Lorenzo zoomed in.

A reflection appeared in a window.

A man's silhouette.

Standing behind the camera.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

“He's here.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“Inside the building.”

“Where?”

“Below us.”

They found a hidden elevator.

The doors opened.

Inside was a fingerprint scanner.

Evelyn touched it.

Nothing.

Lorenzo touched it.

Nothing.

They looked at each other.

Then Evelyn remembered the system.

“Together.”

They placed their hands on the scanner.

Green light.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The elevator descended.

Ten floors.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Then deeper.

The numbers stopped.

The doors opened.

A vast underground chamber stretched beneath the city.

It looked ancient.

Stone walls.

Iron doors.

Thousands of files.

Boxes.

Computers.

Photographs.

And in the center—

a massive circular table.

Daniel was chained to one side.

Evelyn's mother sat opposite him.

Gabriel stood between them.

And at the far end stood Vincent.

Evelyn stopped.

Her father looked exactly as she remembered him from the photograph.

Older.

But alive.

He smiled.

“Isabella.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You're my father.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you abandon me?”

Vincent's smile faded.

“I didn't.”

“Then why?”

“I was forced to.”

“By whom?”

He looked at Evelyn's mother.

“Her.”

Her mother shook her head.

“Don't listen.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“You still lie.”

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Evie.”

She turned.

“Don't believe either of them.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“You had your chance.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I protected her.”

“You hid her.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to her.”

“Yes.”

“You let her hate me.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because you were dangerous.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“I was trying to save her.”

“You killed people.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed families.”

“Yes.”

“You built the Bell network.”

“Yes.”

“And you expect her to forgive you?”

“No.”

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“I don't want forgiveness.”

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“I don't have it.”

Vincent smiled.

“You do.”

He pointed at the table.

A small metal box sat there.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

Her pendant.

She touched her necklace.

The pendant was still around her neck.

Vincent smiled.

“The first key.”

He pointed to Gabriel.

“The second.”

Then Lorenzo.

“The third.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“What?”

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“And you are the fourth.”

“Fourth what?”

“The final authorization.”

Evelyn stared.

“What does the ledger unlock?”

Vincent answered:

“Not money.”

“Then what?”

“People.”

She frowned.

“People?”

“Every person who ever swore loyalty to the empire.”

“Why would they obey me?”

“Because their lives depend on it.”

He pointed toward the walls.

“Every secret.”

“Every crime.”

“Every payment.”

“Every betrayal.”

“Every name.”

“Everything is recorded.”

Lorenzo stared.

“And you want to destroy it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why take control?”

“To make sure nobody else does.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You want me to activate the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“It will expose everything.”

“To the public?”

“Yes.”

“That would destroy Chicago.”

Vincent nodded.

“That is the point.”

Lorenzo looked at Evelyn.

“Don't.”

Vincent smiled.

“See?”

“You're afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Freedom.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

Vincent continued:

“Your family has spent generations pretending the city belongs to them.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“I want you to take it away.”

Evelyn stared at the enormous system around her.

“You want me to destroy my inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“And if I refuse?”

Vincent looked toward Daniel.

“He dies.”

Then toward her mother.

“She dies.”

Then toward Lorenzo.

“And he dies.”

Evelyn's hands curled into fists.

“You're giving me a choice.”

“Yes.”

“A choice where everyone I love dies if I choose wrong.”

Vincent nodded.

“That's what power is.”

Evelyn looked at the three people she loved.

Daniel.

Her mother.

Lorenzo.

Then she looked at Gabriel.

He was watching her silently.

“Gabriel.”

He looked at her.

“You said you wanted me to choose.”

“Yes.”

“What would you choose?”

He hesitated.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.

“I don't know.”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Then you're not free either.”

Gabriel lowered his weapon.

Vincent's eyes hardened.

“Gabriel.”

He didn't move.

“Put the weapon down.”

Gabriel obeyed.

Vincent's expression changed.

“You're betraying me.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at Evelyn.

“I'm choosing.”

Vincent raised his gun.

He fired.

Gabriel fell.

Evelyn screamed.

Lorenzo fired back.

Vincent disappeared behind the table.

Gunfire erupted.

Daniel ducked.

Evelyn rushed toward Gabriel.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Gabriel!”

His eyes opened.

“I'm okay.”

“You've been shot.”

“Vest.”

She touched his chest.

A bullet had struck the armor.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Listen.”

“What?”

“Your mother lied about one thing.”

“What?”

“She didn't kill Matteo.”

Evelyn froze.

“Then who did?”

Gabriel looked toward Vincent.

“He did.”

Evelyn turned.

Vincent was gone.

A door slammed somewhere behind them.

Lorenzo shouted:

“HE'S RUNNING!”

Evelyn stood.

She looked at Gabriel.

“Stay here.”

“Where are you going?”

“To end this.”

She grabbed the pendant.

The underground system came alive.

Screens illuminated.

Thousands of names appeared.

A countdown began.

10:00

09:59

09:58

Evelyn stared.

“What is this?”

Gabriel whispered:

“The purge.”

“What happens at zero?”

He looked at her.

“The entire ledger goes public.”

“Who activated it?”

Gabriel swallowed.

“You did.”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

The countdown continued.

09:41

Lorenzo returned.

“Vincent escaped.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Let him.”

“What?”

She looked at the screens.

“I'm finishing this.”

Lorenzo stared.

“If you release the ledger, everyone connected to it will come after you.”

“I know.”

“They'll kill you.”

“Maybe.”

“You'll lose everything.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I never owned any of it.”

She turned toward the countdown.

“I was born into it.”

Her voice became steady.

“But I don't have to die for it.”

The timer continued.

08:32

Lorenzo stepped beside her.

“What are you going to do?”

Evelyn looked at the thousands of names.

“Tell the truth.”

The countdown dropped.

08:00

Above them, Chicago remained unaware.

Politicians slept.

Judges drank.

Police commanders waited.

Mafia captains made calls.

Banks processed money.

The city breathed normally.

For eight more minutes.

Then Evelyn placed her hand on the final scanner.

A message appeared.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

She looked at Lorenzo.

He nodded.

Evelyn pressed her hand down.

The system asked:

CONFIRM RELEASE?

She whispered:

“Yes.”

The countdown disappeared.

Every screen went black.

Then one sentence appeared.

THE TRUTH BELONGS TO EVERYONE.

Across Chicago, phones began ringing.

Computers lit up.

News stations lost their feeds.

Police databases unlocked.

Bank records appeared.

Encrypted files decrypted.

And somewhere across the city, every powerful man who had spent decades believing himself untouchable received the same message.

ISABELLA MORETTI HAS RELEASED THE LEDGER.

Lorenzo stared at Evelyn.

“What have you done?”

She looked at the screens.

“Ended the war.”

But from somewhere deep beneath the chamber came a slow clap.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Evelyn turned.

Vincent stepped from the shadows.

He was smiling.

“You still don't understand.”

Lorenzo raised his gun.

Vincent looked directly at Evelyn.

“The ledger wasn't the weapon.”

He pointed toward the screens.

“You were.”

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

Vincent smiled.

“And now that you've released it…”

May you like

He lifted his phone.

“…everyone in Chicago knows exactly where you are.”
