Chapter 11: The Twin Who Was Supposed to Die

For one impossible second, Evelyn thought the woman was looking into a mirror.

Same eyes.

Same narrow shape of the face.

Same small scar beneath the left eyebrow.

Even the slight tilt of her head when she was frightened was familiar.

But Evelyn had never seen her before.

She knew that with absolute certainty.

The woman standing beside Vincent Bell looked like her.

Not similar.

Not related.

Her.

Only older.

More exhausted.

And terrified enough to make Evelyn's stomach twist.

Vincent's hand remained on the woman's shoulder.

“Meet your sister.”

Evelyn couldn't breathe.

“No.”

The woman flinched.

Vincent smiled.

“Yes.”

Lorenzo stepped between them.

“Take your hand off her.”

Vincent didn't move.

“She isn't your concern.”

“She is now.”

The woman's eyes darted toward Lorenzo.

Then back to Evelyn.

“I know you.”

Evelyn's voice was barely audible.

“How?”

The woman swallowed.

“Because I've been watching you my entire life.”

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

“From where?”

“Everywhere.”

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Vincent.

He nodded.

Then she whispered:

“My name is Elena.”

Evelyn stared.

“Elena what?”

The woman hesitated.

“Elena Carter.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You can't be.”

“I know.”

“My mother had one child.”

“She had two.”

“My birth certificate…”

“Was altered.”

“My hospital records…”

“Were destroyed.”

Evelyn stepped backward.

“Why?”

Elena looked at Vincent.

“Because he couldn't protect both of us.”

Vincent's expression remained unreadable.

Evelyn turned toward him.

“You separated us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because one child was enough to trigger the bloodline system.”

Evelyn's voice rose.

“You gave me away.”

“I hid you.”

“You let me believe I was alone.”

“You were safer believing that.”

“You let me grow up poor.”

Vincent didn't answer.

“You let me work fourteen-hour shifts.”

Silence.

“You watched me struggle to pay rent.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“I watched.”

“And did nothing.”

“I couldn't.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You couldn't?”

Vincent looked at Elena.

“She stayed with me.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I was the one he kept.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because they needed a sacrifice.”

“Who?”

Elena's voice broke.

“Everyone.”

She looked around the chamber.

“The Morettis.”

“The Bells.”

“The police.”

“The judges.”

“The people who owned this city.”

“They all agreed one child had to disappear.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“Why?”

Elena whispered:

“Because of the prophecy.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“A prophecy?”

Vincent looked annoyed.

“It wasn't a prophecy.”

Elena shook her head.

“They called it that.”

“What was it?”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Two daughters born from the Bell bloodline would destroy the empire.”

Evelyn stared.

“That sounds insane.”

“It was.”

“Then why believe it?”

“Because every generation before us had followed it.”

Vincent finally spoke.

“They weren't afraid of the prophecy.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“They were afraid of the choice.”

“What choice?”

“Which daughter would inherit.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“And you?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I was chosen to die.”

Silence.

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

“But you're alive.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Elena looked at Vincent.

“He couldn't do it.”

Evelyn turned toward Vincent.

“You saved her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you make me disappear?”

“Because if they knew both of you survived, they would have killed you both.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Who are ‘they’?”

Elena answered.

“The Council.”

The word seemed to make the room colder.

“What council?”

“The people behind the empire.”

Lorenzo's face hardened.

“I've spent my entire life running an organization I thought I controlled.”

“You didn't.”

“Who did?”

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

“They did.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Where are they?”

“They're already here.”

Every light in the chamber went out.

Lorenzo immediately drew his weapon.

“Stay down.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“Good advice.”

Gunfire erupted.

Lorenzo shoved Evelyn behind the stone table.

Gabriel tackled Elena to the floor.

Daniel crawled behind a concrete pillar.

Vincent fired toward the ceiling.

Bullets tore through the monitors.

Glass exploded.

Sparks rained down.

Evelyn pressed herself against the floor.

Someone grabbed her wrist.

She almost screamed.

“It’s me.”

Elena.

Evelyn pulled her close.

“Stay down.”

“I know.”

“Who are they?”

“The Council.”

“Where?”

“They don't need to be in the room.”

“What?”

Elena pointed toward the cameras.

“They're watching.”

Evelyn looked up.

Every camera lens had turned toward them.

One by one.

Like eyes.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Isabella Moretti.”

Evelyn froze.

“Do you know why your mother hid you?”

She said nothing.

“Do you know why Vincent protected Elena?”

Nothing.

“Do you know why Lorenzo survived?”

Lorenzo looked up.

The voice continued:

“Because none of them were important.”

A pause.

“You are.”

Evelyn stood.

Lorenzo grabbed her.

“Don't.”

She pulled away.

“I want answers.”

The voice laughed.

“Good.”

A screen flickered on.

An old photograph appeared.

A hospital room.

Two newborn babies.

One Evelyn.

One Elena.

Standing beside them was a younger Vincent.

And a woman Evelyn didn't recognize.

Her mother.

But there was another person in the photograph.

An older man.

Samuel Bell.

Evelyn stared.

“That was before Samuel disappeared.”

The voice answered:

“He never disappeared.”

She looked at the photograph.

“What did he do?”

“He chose Elena.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because she was stronger.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

The voice continued:

“Vincent disagreed.”

“That's why he ran.”

Evelyn looked at Vincent.

He remained silent.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you weren't ready.”

“I was twelve when you took my life away.”

“I was trying to save it.”

“You don't get to decide that.”

Vincent looked at her.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“That's why I gave you the choice.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

“You forced me.”

“I showed you the truth.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

Vincent nodded.

“I've never lied about what I am.”

Lorenzo laughed bitterly.

“You've lied about everything.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Not everything.”

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

“Then tell me who killed Matteo.”

Vincent went silent.

Evelyn turned.

“Answer him.”

Vincent looked at Elena.

Elena shook her head.

“Don't.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Why?”

Elena whispered:

“Because you'll hate him.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

Then said:

“I killed Matteo.”

Lorenzo's face became expressionless.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was going to expose the Council.”

“So you killed him.”

“Yes.”

“And then blamed my mother.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

Evelyn stepped between them.

“No.”

“Move.”

“No.”

“He killed my father.”

“He wasn't your father.”

“That doesn't matter.”

“It does.”

Lorenzo stared at her.

Evelyn's voice broke.

“If you kill him now, we'll never know the rest.”

Lorenzo lowered the weapon.

Barely.

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

“That's why you're different.”

“What?”

“You understand the difference between justice and revenge.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Lorenzo.

“I just don't want another person to die because someone else decided they deserved it.”

Elena began crying.

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Why are you crying?”

“Because that's what our mother used to say.”

“What?”

Elena smiled through tears.

“She said the same thing.”

Evelyn froze.

“When?”

“Every night.”

“What else?”

“She told me about you.”

Evelyn's voice softened.

“What did she say?”

“That you were brave.”

Evelyn looked away.

“I wasn't.”

Elena stepped closer.

“You were.”

“No.”

“You saved Lorenzo.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“That was luck.”

“You saved Daniel.”

“That was necessary.”

“You saved me.”

“I didn't even know you existed.”

Elena smiled.

“That's why it matters.”

A gunshot cracked.

Elena fell.

Evelyn screamed.

“ELENA!”

Lorenzo fired toward the upper balcony.

Gabriel grabbed Evelyn.

“She's hit.”

Evelyn dropped beside Elena.

Blood spread across her shirt.

“No.”

Elena coughed.

“I'm okay.”

“You're bleeding.”

“Bullet went through.”

“Stay with me.”

Evelyn pressed her hands against the wound.

“Someone get a medic!”

Vincent shouted:

“Everyone out!”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because they're not trying to kill Elena.”

He pointed upward.

“They're trying to make Evelyn choose.”

Another screen activated.

Three names appeared.

ELENA

LORENZO

DANIEL

Then a fourth.

GABRIEL

Underneath:

SELECT ONE.

Evelyn stared.

“No.”

Vincent walked toward the control system.

“It's the Council.”

“Then stop them.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because this system predates me.”

“Then destroy it.”

“I tried.”

“Try harder.”

Vincent looked at her.

“That's what your mother said.”

Evelyn stared.

“My mother fought them.”

“Yes.”

“Did she win?”

Vincent's expression became hollow.

“No.”

“What happened?”

“She traded herself for you.”

Evelyn froze.

“She what?”

“She agreed to disappear.”

“To save me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she stay alive?”

Vincent looked toward the floor.

“Because I couldn't kill her.”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“You loved her.”

Vincent didn't answer.

That was enough.

Elena suddenly grabbed Evelyn's hand.

“There's another room.”

“What?”

“Behind the wall.”

“Where?”

“Under the river.”

“What's inside?”

“The original files.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

“Everything?”

Elena nodded.

“The Council.”

“Vincent.”

“Samuel.”

“Your mother.”

“Me.”

“And you.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because our birth wasn't an accident.”

“What?”

“We were created.”

Evelyn went still.

Elena continued:

“They selected our parents.”

“They chose our blood.”

“They engineered the marriage.”

“They planned the inheritance.”

“They created the entire bloodline.”

Evelyn stared.

“You mean…”

“We were born to destroy them.”

Silence.

Lorenzo looked toward Vincent.

“Is that true?”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

Evelyn whispered:

“Who created us?”

Vincent looked at the dark ceiling.

“The Council.”

“Why?”

“To build the perfect heir.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I wasn't created.”

“You were.”

“I was born.”

Vincent looked at her.

“Those aren't mutually exclusive.”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed through the chamber.

Nobody moved.

Vincent didn't react.

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“You don't get to call my life a project.”

“I know.”

“You don't get to decide what I am.”

“I know.”

“You don't own me.”

“No.”

“Then why are you still standing there?”

Vincent looked at her.

“Because I'm waiting for you to realize something.”

“What?”

“You've already won.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the screens.

The Council's system was failing.

Names disappeared.

Accounts shut down.

Encrypted archives unlocked.

The red dots across Chicago vanished.

Evelyn looked at the screen.

The Council had lost control.

Her override had broken the bloodline protocol.

She had done what nobody had managed to do in generations.

She had made the system irrelevant.

Then the chamber doors opened.

A group of heavily armed men entered.

At their center was a woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Evelyn recognized her immediately.

The woman from the photograph.

Her mother.

But she was supposed to be dying upstairs.

Evelyn stared.

“Mom?”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, darling.”

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

Vincent whispered:

“No.”

The woman looked at him.

“You failed.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“You're dead.”

She smiled.

“So are you.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at her.

Then Elena.

Then Lorenzo.

“I'm the last member of the Council.”

Evelyn's blood went cold.

“My mother?”

The woman shook her head.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Your mother died twenty-three years ago.”

Evelyn stared.

“Then who are you?”

The woman reached up.

And slowly removed the skin-colored mask covering half her face.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

The face beneath it was almost identical to her mother's.

The woman smiled.

“I'm her twin.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“And I'm the one who ordered your mother's death.”

The chamber fell silent.

Then she raised her weapon.

May you like

“Now let's finish what we started twenty-three years ago.”

The gunfire began.
