Chapter 5: The Moretti Secret

Lorenzo did.

The three words seemed to burn through Evelyn's fingertips.

For one impossible second, the gunfire disappeared.

The shouting vanished.

Even the screaming men around her seemed to fade into silence.

There was only the photograph.

Her mother.

Daniel.

Celeste.

And the young man standing behind them.

Lorenzo.

Or someone who looked enough like him to make Evelyn's stomach twist.

On the back:

LORENZO DID.

Her fingers went numb.

“No.”

She whispered it to herself.

“No.”

A bullet slammed into the concrete wall beside her.

The shock snapped her back into reality.

“Evelyn!”

Lorenzo.

She looked up.

He stood twenty feet away, firing toward the gunmen flooding through the vault entrance.

“Get behind me!”

Evelyn didn't move.

She couldn't.

She was staring at him.

At the man who had dragged her out of the dining room.

The man who had shielded her from bullets.

The man who had told her she was no longer invisible.

The man who might have been responsible for everything that had happened to her.

Lorenzo saw the photograph in her hand.

His expression changed.

“Evelyn.”

She took a step backward.

He lowered his gun.

“Give me the photograph.”

“No.”

His eyes sharpened.

“Evelyn, give it to me.”

“You wrote this?”

“No.”

“You knew about my father.”

“I knew his name.”

“You knew about my mother.”

“I knew she was alive.”

“You knew about me.”

“I knew someone was hiding something.”

“That's not an answer.”

A gunman appeared behind Lorenzo.

Evelyn screamed.

“Behind you!”

Lorenzo turned and fired.

The man dropped.

Lorenzo looked back at her.

“Run.”

She shook her head.

“You're lying to me.”

“Not now.”

“You said you'd tell me everything.”

“I will.”

“You keep saying that.”

“And I'm still alive long enough to do it.”

Another gunshot.

Lorenzo crossed the distance between them in seconds.

He grabbed Evelyn's wrist.

“Now.”

She resisted.

“Let go.”

“Not happening.”

“You don't get to touch me.”

His expression hardened.

“Fine.”

He released her.

“Then walk.”

Evelyn didn't move.

Lorenzo pointed toward the corridor.

“Walk, Evelyn.”

She did.

Because despite everything, she trusted one thing.

Not him.

Not Daniel.

Not Celeste.

Not the photograph.

She trusted the bullets.

They were real.

And they were coming.

Lorenzo stayed behind her, firing controlled bursts while his men returned fire.

They reached a narrow passage behind the shelves.

Daniel was already there.

“This way!”

Evelyn ran toward him.

Lorenzo followed.

They disappeared through a hidden door just as bullets tore through the shelving.

The door slammed shut.

Silence.

A long, suffocating silence.

Evelyn leaned against the wall.

Her chest rose and fell violently.

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?”

She held up the photograph.

“Ask him.”

Daniel saw it.

His face collapsed.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was on the floor.”

He stared at the words on the back.

His eyes closed.

“You knew.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Evelyn's voice broke.

“You all knew.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“Evelyn.”

She spun toward him.

“Did you take me?”

“No.”

“Did you steal me?”

“No.”

“Did you erase my identity?”

“No.”

“Did you help my father disappear?”

“Yes.”

The answer hit harder than a slap.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Why?”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

“Because he asked me to.”

“My father asked you to disappear?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he ask you?”

“Because my father was looking for him.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel had something my father wanted.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Lorenzo looked at the photograph.

“You.”

Evelyn felt cold.

“You're saying my father hid me from yours?”

“Yes.”

“And you helped him?”

“I didn't know who you were.”

“When?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

Her breath stopped.

“You knew me when I was a baby?”

“No.”

“Then when?”

“When you were twelve.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You knew me.”

“Yes.”

“My father brought you to me?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

Lorenzo looked away.

His silence was unbearable.

Finally, he said:

“I found you.”

“Where?”

“Outside a hospital.”

Evelyn's mouth went dry.

“What hospital?”

“St. Catherine's.”

Her heart skipped.

That name meant something.

She didn't know why.

A hallway.

White lights.

A red door.

A woman screaming.

She closed her eyes.

“I remember that place.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“You shouldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because what you remember isn't what happened.”

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“Then tell me.”

He hesitated.

“Your mother brought you there.”

“She died when I was twelve.”

“Yes.”

“But you said—”

“She didn't die that night.”

Evelyn stared.

“She survived.”

“For how long?”

“Three days.”

“And you were there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My father sent me.”

“Why?”

“To make sure she didn't talk.”

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

“You were going to kill her?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I was seventeen.”

She stared.

“I was a kid.”

“You were seventeen.”

“I couldn't even understand what my father was asking me to do.”

“What did you do?”

“I disobeyed him.”

Evelyn's voice softened despite herself.

“How?”

“I took your mother out of the hospital.”

“Where?”

“A safe house.”

“Who helped you?”

“Daniel.”

“And Celeste?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“You all knew each other.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Lorenzo took a breath.

“Because we were all trying to stop my father.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That isn't the whole truth.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“You want to tell it?”

Daniel shook his head.

“You should.”

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

“My father wasn't the head of the organization.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Then who was?”

“My grandfather.”

She stared.

“Your grandfather?”

“He built the network.”

“And your father inherited it.”

“Yes.”

“What did your father do?”

“Expanded it.”

“How?”

“Politicians. Judges. unions. police. businesses.”

“The network.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why was I involved?”

“Because your mother discovered something else.”

“What?”

Lorenzo looked directly at her.

“The network wasn't simply protecting criminals.”

He paused.

“It was protecting a secret.”

“What secret?”

“My grandfather had a list.”

“A list of what?”

“People who had been paid.”

“Bribes?”

“Not just bribes.”

“Then what?”

“Assassinations.”

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

“People they killed?”

“People they ordered killed.”

“How many?”

“Hundreds.”

She stared at him.

“And my mother had the evidence.”

“Yes.”

“That's why they wanted me dead.”

“Partly.”

“Partly?”

Lorenzo looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

“Tell her.”

Lorenzo's eyes returned to Evelyn.

“Your mother wasn't merely a witness.”

“What was she?”

“She helped build the system.”

Evelyn's face went blank.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My mother was a nurse.”

“She was a forensic accountant.”

“What?”

“She worked for one of my father's shell companies.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“That isn't possible.”

“She used the company records to trace payments.”

“And found the murders.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she go to the police?”

“Because some of the police were on the list.”

“The FBI?”

“Some of them too.”

“Then who could she trust?”

Lorenzo's expression became grim.

“Nobody.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“And my father?”

“He was her handler.”

“Handler?”

“He worked undercover.”

“Where?”

“Inside the organization.”

Evelyn's mind struggled to keep up.

“So my father was working for the government?”

Daniel nodded.

“Not officially.”

“Then what was he?”

“A man who believed the law could still be fixed.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“And did he fix it?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“They found him.”

“That's when he disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say he drowned?”

“Because we needed them to believe you were alone.”

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

“You let me believe my father was dead.”

“I was protecting you.”

“Everybody keeps using that word.”

Her voice shook.

“Protecting.”

She looked at all three of them.

“Do you know what protection looks like from where I stood?”

Nobody answered.

“It looks like abandonment.”

Silence.

“It looks like a twelve-year-old girl sitting beside her mother's hospital bed, waiting for a father who never comes.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“It looks like growing up wondering whether he chose gambling over me.”

Her voice broke.

“It looks like being afraid to open the door because debt collectors might be waiting.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You don't.”

She turned toward Lorenzo.

“And you.”

He said nothing.

“You've been watching me?”

“Not recently.”

“But you knew who I was tonight.”

“No.”

“You knew my name.”

“Because you told me.”

“You knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you never said anything.”

“I didn't know if it was safe.”

“For whom?”

“For you.”

She stared at him.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

The young Lorenzo.

Her mother.

Daniel.

Celeste.

And the words.

LORENZO DID.

“What did you do?”

Lorenzo didn't answer.

“Lorenzo.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“I moved you.”

“Where?”

“From the safe house.”

“To where?”

“A foster family.”

Evelyn's heart stopped.

“You sent me into foster care?”

“Yes.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I thought it was the safest place.”

“You thought?”

“I was seventeen.”

“You were old enough to decide I wasn't your responsibility.”

His face tightened.

“I was old enough to understand that if my father found you, you'd die.”

“Then why didn't you stay?”

“Because he would have found you through me.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Did you ever see me again?”

“No.”

“Until tonight?”

“Yes.”

She looked away.

That should have made her feel better.

It didn't.

Because something about the photograph was still wrong.

She turned it over.

LORENZO DID.

She looked at Daniel.

“Who wrote this?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

Daniel flinched.

Evelyn almost regretted saying it.

Almost.

“Who wrote it?”

Daniel looked at Lorenzo.

“I did.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I wrote it.”

Evelyn stared.

“You wrote 'Lorenzo did'?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted whoever found the photograph to suspect him.”

“Why?”

“To keep them from looking for the real person.”

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“Who?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Lorenzo did.

“My mother.”

Daniel looked at him.

Lorenzo continued.

“She was the one who ordered the transfer.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she want to protect me?”

“Because she knew what my father planned.”

“What did he plan?”

Lorenzo's voice became quiet.

“He wanted to marry Celeste's family into ours.”

“That sounds like tonight.”

“It was.”

“And me?”

“You were the insurance.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“My father needed the ledger.”

“So?”

“The ledger was encoded.”

“With what?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Your DNA.”

Silence.

Evelyn laughed once.

“No.”

“The original records were protected by biometric encryption.”

“That's impossible.”

“My grandfather didn't trust passwords.”

“Then why use me?”

“Because your mother designed the system.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“She used my DNA?”

“Your blood.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you understand the code.”

“I don't.”

“Your mother created the ledger.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“You know I'm right.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She created the encryption, not the ledger.”

“Then explain it.”

Daniel said nothing.

Evelyn looked between them.

“What are you hiding?”

Daniel finally answered.

“The ledger was created by someone else.”

“Who?”

He looked at Lorenzo.

“Matteo.”

Lorenzo's face hardened.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he need Evelyn's DNA?”

“He didn't.”

Evelyn's stomach twisted.

“Then whose?”

Daniel whispered:

“Yours.”

“Why?”

“Because you're not just the key.”

He looked at her.

“You're the proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Daniel's eyes filled with fear.

“Proof that Matteo Moretti had a daughter.”

Lorenzo went still.

Evelyn stared at him.

“But I'm not his daughter.”

Daniel didn't answer.

“I'm not.”

He finally said:

“No.”

Relief flashed through her.

Then he continued.

“You're his granddaughter.”

Silence.

Lorenzo's eyes widened.

Evelyn stared.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Your mother was Matteo's daughter.”

Evelyn couldn't breathe.

“That would make Lorenzo…”

“Your uncle.”

Lorenzo took a step backward.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother was Matteo Moretti's first child.”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“My father never had a daughter.”

“He did.”

“She died.”

“She didn't.”

“Why didn't he know?”

“Because your grandmother hid her.”

Evelyn's mind spun.

“So Celeste knew?”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

“Daniel knew.”

“And Lorenzo?”

“He didn't.”

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

His face had gone completely blank.

“You're my uncle.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“I didn't know.”

“I believe you.”

He seemed almost startled.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you look more horrified than I feel.”

For the first time, Lorenzo looked human.

He rubbed a hand over his face.

“Jesus.”

Daniel spoke quietly.

“There is more.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Of course there is.”

“The bloodline isn't the reason they want you.”

“What is?”

Daniel looked at the pendant in her hand.

“Your grandmother didn't just hide your mother.”

He pointed toward the pendant.

“She hid something inside you.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

“A memory.”

“What?”

“A memory you were too young to understand.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“How?”

“Hypnosis.”

Evelyn stared.

“You hypnotized me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your mother.”

“She hypnotized her child?”

“She was trying to protect her.”

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a small cassette tape.

Evelyn stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Your mother's voice.”

Lorenzo took it.

“Where did you get this?”

“From the safe house.”

“Why didn't you destroy it?”

“Because I couldn't.”

“What's on it?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“The instructions.”

“For what?”

“To recover the memory.”

A noise came from behind the hidden door.

Everyone froze.

Someone was approaching.

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

Daniel whispered:

“They found us.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came through.

“Evelyn.”

She knew it.

Adrian Bell.

“Open the door.”

Lorenzo stepped in front of her.

Bell laughed.

“You still think you're protecting her, Lorenzo?”

“Show yourself.”

“I don't need to.”

“What do you want?”

“The girl.”

“You'll have to come through me.”

“No.”

Bell's voice became colder.

“I'll come through her.”

Evelyn's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

She turned.

Daniel was gone.

“Dad?”

No answer.

Lorenzo spun.

“Daniel?”

Nothing.

The rear passage was empty.

Then the cassette tape in Lorenzo's hand began playing.

A woman's voice filled the corridor.

Evelyn's mother.

“If you're hearing this, Evelyn, then Daniel is gone.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

Her mother's voice continued.

“I need you to remember the night of the fire.”

Evelyn froze.

“What fire?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

The recording continued.

“You were twelve.”

A crackling sound.

Then her mother whispered:

“Your father didn't disappear that night.”

Evelyn's breathing stopped.

“He came back for you.”

A pause.

“He took you to the river.”

Lorenzo's face tightened.

The recording continued.

“But someone followed him.”

A man's voice could be heard faintly in the background.

Then a gunshot.

Her mother gasped.

The recording ended.

Evelyn stared at the cassette.

“That was it?”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“There was more.”

“What?”

He turned the cassette over.

A second side.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then her mother's voice.

“Evelyn, if you remember nothing else, remember this.”

A long pause.

“Your father wasn't running from the Morettis.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“He was running from me.”

The tape stopped.

Lorenzo looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Because suddenly she remembered.

A river.

Rain.

A black car.

Her father holding her hand.

A woman screaming.

Then—

A gun.

A flash.

A body falling.

And a man's voice whispering:

“I'm sorry, Evie.”

She gasped.

Lorenzo caught her.

“What did you see?”

“My father.”

“What about him?”

“He wasn't alone.”

“Who was with him?”

Evelyn looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Your mother.”

Lorenzo froze.

“What?”

“She was there.”

“Doing what?”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“She shot someone.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

She suddenly grabbed Lorenzo's arm.

“But I remember what happened next.”

“What?”

“My father gave her something.”

“What?”

“The pendant.”

Lorenzo stared at the pendant in Evelyn's hand.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

A metallic explosion ripped through the corridor.

The hidden door blew inward.

Smoke filled the passage.

Gunmen poured through.

Lorenzo pushed Evelyn down.

“RUN!”

She crawled through the rear exit.

Bullets ripped through the walls.

Lorenzo fired back.

Celeste appeared through the smoke.

“Lorenzo!”

He looked at her.

“Where's Daniel?”

Celeste's face changed.

“He's gone.”

“Who took him?”

“I don't know.”

“Then find out.”

She nodded.

Evelyn reached the end of the corridor.

A door opened.

She ran through.

Then stopped.

She was standing inside an old underground train tunnel.

Lorenzo came behind her.

“Keep moving.”

She looked down the tunnel.

At the far end, a figure stood beneath a flickering light.

Daniel.

Alive.

But someone was holding a gun to his head.

Adrian Bell stepped into view.

He smiled.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

Bell shook his head.

“Don't.”

He pressed the gun harder against Daniel's temple.

“You shoot me…”

He smiled.

“…he dies.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Let him go.”

Bell looked at her.

“I will.”

“When?”

“When you give me the pendant.”

She looked down.

The pendant rested in her palm.

Lorenzo whispered:

“Don't.”

Bell laughed.

“You see?”

He looked at Evelyn.

“He doesn't trust you.”

“He doesn't trust you either.”

“No.”

Bell smiled.

“He trusts one person.”

“Who?”

Bell's gaze moved toward Celeste.

“Her.”

Celeste went pale.

Bell continued:

“Because she was the one who carried you out of the hospital.”

Evelyn looked at Celeste.

“You said you protected me.”

“I did.”

“You lied.”

Celeste shook her head.

“No.”

Bell laughed.

“She didn't just protect you.”

He leaned closer to Daniel.

“She was supposed to kill you.”

Evelyn froze.

Celeste closed her eyes.

“Evelyn…”

Bell smiled.

“Ask her what happened the night you were born.”

Evelyn stared at Celeste.

“What did you do?”

Celeste lowered her weapon.

“I couldn't do it.”

“Do what?”

“Kill you.”

“Why?”

Celeste's eyes filled with tears.

“Because when I held you…”

She looked at Evelyn.

“…you opened your eyes.”

Silence.

“And you called me Mom.”

Evelyn's heart broke.

“That isn't possible.”

“You were six months old.”

“I couldn't speak.”

“You did.”

Celeste stepped forward.

“And I knew then that I couldn't let them take you.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Who were they?”

Celeste stared at him.

“Your father.”

“And?”

She hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Lorenzo froze.

“My mother wanted Evelyn dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Celeste's voice dropped.

“Because she knew what Evelyn's blood could prove.”

“What?”

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

“That Matteo Moretti had another child.”

Lorenzo stared.

“My mother was Matteo's wife.”

“Yes.”

“And Evelyn's mother was his daughter.”

“Yes.”

“So why would Evelyn prove anything?”

Celeste swallowed.

“Because Matteo's daughter wasn't his biological daughter.”

Silence.

Lorenzo's face changed.

“What?”

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

“Your mother was adopted.”

Evelyn stared.

“No.”

“She was.”

“By whom?”

Celeste looked toward Daniel.

He whispered:

“The Bells.”

Lorenzo's expression turned murderous.

“My father adopted a Bell?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Bell's father adopted her.”

Lorenzo stared.

“That means…”

“Yes.”

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“My mother was a Bell.”

Daniel nodded.

“And that's why they want you.”

Bell smiled.

“Exactly.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You're my family.”

“No.”

Bell's smile disappeared.

“I'm your mother's brother.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“You're my uncle.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“Then why are you trying to kill her?”

Bell laughed.

“I'm not.”

He lowered the gun from Daniel's head.

“I've been trying to protect her.”

Evelyn stared.

“By killing everyone around me?”

“Because everyone around you knows what happens when the truth comes out.”

“What truth?”

Bell looked at Lorenzo.

“Tell her.”

Lorenzo didn't answer.

Bell smiled.

“Your father didn't steal the ledger.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“He created it.”

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

“And your father…”

He nodded toward Daniel.

“…didn't disappear.”

Bell smiled.

“He went into hiding because he was the last person who knew where the real ledger was.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Where is it?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Inside the Obsidian.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“We searched the vault.”

“You searched the wrong vault.”

“There are two?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“The real one isn't underground.”

He pointed upward.

“It's inside the penthouse.”

Lorenzo stared.

Bell laughed.

“Now you understand.”

“What?”

“Why the attack happened.”

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

Bell continued:

“They didn't come for the ledger.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“They came to force you back into the building.”

Evelyn whispered:

“Why?”

Bell smiled.

“Because the real vault opens at midnight.”

Lorenzo checked his watch.

11:58 PM.

Two minutes.

Bell raised his gun again.

“And only Evelyn can open it.”

Lorenzo stepped toward him.

“Let Daniel go.”

Bell nodded.

“Gladly.”

He released Daniel.

Daniel stumbled forward.

Lorenzo caught him.

Bell looked at Evelyn.

“Now give me the pendant.”

Evelyn stared at it.

Then at Bell.

Then at Lorenzo.

Something clicked in her mind.

The pendant wasn't a key.

It wasn't the vault.

It wasn't even the proof.

It was a distraction.

She remembered her mother's voice.

Remember the night of the fire.

She remembered her father.

The river.

The gun.

The woman.

The pendant.

Then something else.

A sentence her mother had whispered when Evelyn was twelve.

Something she had forgotten for twenty-three years.

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

“Your father didn't hide the ledger.”

Lorenzo stared.

“He hid something else.”

“What?”

She looked at Bell.

“He hid the person who could destroy it.”

Bell's smile disappeared.

Evelyn slowly closed her fingers around the pendant.

“Me.”

Silence.

Then every phone in the tunnel rang simultaneously.

Lorenzo's.

Celeste's.

Daniel's.

Evelyn's.

All at once.

A message appeared on every screen.

MIDNIGHT HAS BEGUN.

The tunnel lights went black.

A scream came from behind them.

Then a single gunshot.

When the emergency lights returned—

Daniel was gone.

And Celeste was lying on the floor.

Blood spreading across her emerald gown.

Evelyn stared.

Lorenzo dropped beside her.

“Celeste!”

Celeste opened her eyes.

Her lips moved.

“Don't…”

Lorenzo leaned closer.

“Don't what?”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Trust…”

Her breath caught.

May you like

“…the man who says he is your uncle.”

Then she died.
