Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Trap

The vault door began to open from the inside.

That was the moment Evelyn understood something was horribly wrong.

Not merely dangerous.

Not merely complicated.

Wrong.

A vault could be forced open.

A vault could be breached.

A vault could be destroyed.

But it could not be opened from the inside unless someone was already there.

Someone had been waiting.

For them.

For her.

The massive section of black marble beneath Evelyn's feet trembled again.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Somewhere below, gears groaned.

Metal scraped against metal.

Then came a heavy mechanical CLUNK.

The sound rolled through the restaurant.

Every man in Lorenzo's security detail raised his weapon.

Daniel Carter stared at the floor as though he were looking at a grave.

Celeste whispered:

“Oh God.”

Lorenzo turned toward her.

“You knew.”

She shook her head.

“Not this.”

“You knew someone was in the vault.”

“I knew they wanted you to go there.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Celeste looked at him.

“I didn't know they were already inside.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to understand that I was trying to stop this.”

“You arranged the engagement dinner.”

“Yes.”

“You controlled the guest list.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Evelyn would be working tonight.”

Celeste hesitated.

“Yes.”

“And you knew about the vault.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

“So tell me why I shouldn't put a bullet through your head.”

Celeste looked at him.

“Because if you kill me, you'll never find your mother.”

Silence.

Even the men around them seemed to stop breathing.

Lorenzo's gun remained raised.

“My mother is dead.”

“No.”

“You've said that twice.”

“And I've been telling you the truth.”

“You lied to me tonight.”

“I lied about everything that kept me alive.”

“That isn't an explanation.”

Celeste swallowed.

“They have your mother.”

“Who?”

“The Bell organization.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“Bell.”

Evelyn remembered the name.

The one Celeste had spoken three weeks earlier.

If Moretti signs the river deal, Bell gets the west side.

Lorenzo noticed the change in Evelyn's expression.

“You heard that name before.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“At the private lounge.”

“What did you hear?”

Evelyn repeated the conversation.

Lorenzo listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he looked at Celeste.

“You've been negotiating with Bell.”

Celeste shook her head.

“No.”

“You mentioned the west side.”

“I was buying time.”

“For what?”

“For you.”

Lorenzo laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Everyone keeps saying they're saving me.”

He lowered his weapon slightly.

“Yet somehow I'm always the one standing in the middle of the bullets.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Lorenzo.”

“What?”

“You need to listen to me.”

“No.”

Daniel stopped.

“You've spent twenty-three years believing one version of your family.”

Lorenzo's eyes turned cold.

“And you've spent twenty-three years hiding from yours.”

Daniel accepted the accusation.

“I had to.”

“You abandoned Evelyn.”

“I protected her.”

“You let her believe you were dead.”

“Because the people hunting her believed it too.”

Evelyn stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both men looked at her.

She held the pendant tightly.

“You're both talking about me like I'm a piece of evidence.”

Nobody answered.

“I want the truth.”

Lorenzo's expression softened by the smallest amount.

“You'll get it.”

“Not later.”

“Now.”

He nodded.

“Now.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Why was I targeted?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Because your mother discovered something.”

“What?”

“A network.”

“What kind?”

“Judges. Police commanders. politicians. businessmen.”

Lorenzo added:

“And organized crime.”

Daniel nodded.

“They weren't separate anymore.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your mother discovered that several criminal organizations had secretly joined forces with people inside law enforcement.”

Lorenzo's expression darkened.

“A syndicate.”

“Yes.”

“Who led it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“That is what the ledger contained.”

Lorenzo looked at the floor.

“Names.”

“Names, accounts, payments, photographs.”

“And the Morettis?”

“Your father was involved.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

“How deeply?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Deep enough.”

The floor shook again.

A crack appeared in the marble.

Lorenzo immediately turned.

“Everyone back.”

The crack widened.

Then the floor dropped several inches.

Evelyn stumbled.

Lorenzo caught her.

A section of marble collapsed.

Smoke rose from the opening.

A hidden elevator platform was slowly emerging from beneath the restaurant.

Nobody moved.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Empty.

Inside was a single chair.

And on it sat a small wooden box.

Lorenzo stared.

Daniel whispered:

“It's begun.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“What has?”

“The test.”

“What test?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Her.”

Evelyn stepped toward the elevator.

Lorenzo blocked her.

“No.”

She frowned.

“Move.”

“No.”

“You said I would get the truth.”

“And I said I'd protect you.”

“I don't need you to decide for me.”

“You don't understand what you're walking into.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked at the box.

“It's a biometric lock.”

Evelyn stared.

“How do you know?”

“My father used them.”

“Can it hurt me?”

“No.”

Daniel interrupted.

“Not directly.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel swallowed.

“It may ask a question.”

“What question?”

He didn't answer.

Lorenzo turned toward him.

“Daniel.”

“I don't know.”

“You built this system.”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

“And you don't know?”

“Not anymore.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

Then stepped into the elevator.

Evelyn followed.

He turned.

“I said no.”

She ignored him.

“I saved your life.”

“That doesn't give you permission to get yourself killed.”

“And you getting shot gives you permission?”

He stared at her.

Evelyn folded her arms.

“If you want me to stay, give me a better reason.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

Then he stepped aside.

“Stay behind me.”

She entered.

Daniel followed.

Celeste remained outside.

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You stay here.”

She nodded.

The elevator descended.

Slowly.

The restaurant disappeared above them.

The sounds of shouting and alarms faded.

Darkness surrounded them.

Evelyn could hear the mechanical hum.

She looked at Lorenzo.

“You trust your security team?”

“No.”

“Your father?”

“No.”

“Celeste?”

“No.”

“Me?”

He looked at her.

“I don't know you.”

“Then why am I here?”

“Because someone is willing to start a war to get you.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“It answers enough.”

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A long corridor stretched ahead.

Concrete walls.

Old pipes.

Dim lights.

The air smelled damp.

Evelyn stepped out.

Lorenzo followed.

Daniel stayed close.

At the end of the corridor was a steel door.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a small circular indentation.

Evelyn looked at the pendant.

“This?”

Daniel nodded.

She inserted the tiny key.

Nothing happened.

She twisted.

A mechanical click echoed.

The steel door opened.

Inside was a room.

Not a vault.

A library.

Thousands of documents lined the walls.

Boxes stacked from floor to ceiling.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Old newspapers.

Bank records.

Weapons.

And in the center stood a desk.

On the desk was a tape recorder.

Lorenzo walked toward it.

Evelyn noticed something.

A photograph.

Pinned above the desk.

Her mother.

Daniel.

Lorenzo's father.

And another man.

The same man from the voice on the phone.

She pointed.

“That's him.”

Daniel went pale.

“Who?”

“The voice.”

Lorenzo took the photograph down.

“Do you know him?”

Daniel stared at it.

Then nodded.

“His name is Adrian Bell.”

Lorenzo's face became expressionless.

“Bell.”

“Yes.”

“The man who supposedly runs the west side.”

Daniel nodded.

“He doesn't run the west side.”

“Then what does he run?”

“Everything.”

The tape recorder clicked on by itself.

A voice filled the room.

Old.

Distorted.

But recognizable.

Lorenzo's father.

“If you're hearing this, I'm already dead.”

Lorenzo froze.

The recording continued.

“I know you will believe I betrayed you.”

Lorenzo stared at the machine.

“You did.”

His father's voice continued.

“But the truth is worse.”

A pause.

“The people you think are your enemies are only pieces.”

Another pause.

“The real enemy is the person standing closest to you.”

Lorenzo slowly looked toward Daniel.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

“She will come to you pretending to save you.”

Evelyn's heart began pounding.

“Don't trust the woman.”

Lorenzo looked toward Celeste's photograph.

The recording continued.

“Not Celeste.”

Evelyn's breath stopped.

“Your mother.”

Lorenzo went still.

“My mother?”

His father's voice continued.

“She knows what the girl is.”

Evelyn stared at Daniel.

“What girl?”

The tape clicked.

Static.

Then:

“Evelyn Carter is not who you believe she is.”

The recorder stopped.

Silence.

Evelyn felt as though the room had tilted.

Lorenzo turned toward her.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel moved forward.

“Evelyn, listen to me.”

“What am I?”

“You're my daughter.”

“That isn't what he said.”

“You are.”

“Then why did he say I'm not who I believe I am?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Because your mother changed your identity.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

“From what?”

Daniel looked at Lorenzo.

“From the Moretti family.”

Lorenzo's expression darkened.

“Again.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Your mother wasn't hiding Evelyn from the Morettis.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“She was hiding the Morettis from Evelyn.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a second photograph.

This one was newer.

Taken perhaps ten years ago.

A little girl stood outside a school.

Beside her was an older woman.

Evelyn stared at the child.

It was her.

But the woman wasn't her mother.

It was Celeste.

Evelyn's voice disappeared.

“Why was she with me?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because Celeste was your guardian.”

“What?”

“Your mother trusted her.”

Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.

“This can't be real.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Your mother died when you were twelve.”

“Yes.”

“Who found her?”

“Me.”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I found her.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“She wasn't dead.”

“What?”

“She was poisoned.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“She survived for three days.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she made me promise.”

“What promise?”

“That if she died, I would make sure you forgot.”

Evelyn stared.

“Forgot what?”

Daniel's answer came slowly.

“Who your real father was.”

Silence.

Lorenzo looked at him.

“You're not her father.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn felt her heart crack.

“Then who is?”

Daniel looked at Lorenzo.

Lorenzo stared back.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“Your father is dead.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with confusion.

“Who?”

“Matteo Moretti.”

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That would mean…”

“Yes.”

“I'm his daughter.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Lorenzo…”

He stopped.

Evelyn finished the sentence.

“Is my brother?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.”

Evelyn stared.

“What?”

Lorenzo's face had gone pale.

Daniel looked between them.

“That's the lie.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“Finally.”

Everyone turned.

Celeste stood there.

Her face was wet with tears.

She held a gun.

Pointed at Daniel.

Evelyn froze.

Lorenzo stepped in front of her.

“Celeste.”

She shook her head.

“Don't come closer.”

“What are you doing?”

“Finishing what I started.”

“You're the one behind this.”

“No.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“By setting me up?”

“I needed you to come here.”

“Why?”

“Because the vault only opens when a Moretti and a Carter are together.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“You used her.”

“Yes.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

He took one step forward.

“Why?”

Celeste's hand trembled.

“Because I couldn't open it alone.”

“What is inside?”

She looked at Evelyn.

“The truth.”

A metallic sound came from behind them.

The vault door locked.

The lights went out.

Then a voice came over the speakers.

Adrian Bell.

“Good evening.”

Lorenzo raised his gun.

“Show yourself.”

A laugh echoed through the room.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“This isn't my vault.”

The lights came back on.

The desk was gone.

The walls had shifted.

A hidden screen illuminated.

And on it appeared a live video.

A woman sat in a dark room.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Terrified.

Evelyn stared.

She knew her.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

From childhood.

From the face she had spent years believing belonged to a dead woman.

Her mother.

Alive.

The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.

Then whispered:

“Evelyn…”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Mom?”

The woman began crying.

“I'm sorry.”

Evelyn's knees weakened.

Lorenzo caught her.

Her mother's voice continued.

“I lied to you.”

The screen flickered.

“I lied about your father.”

Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.

Her mother continued:

“And I lied about Celeste.”

Celeste lowered her gun.

“I didn't betray you, Evelyn.”

Her voice broke.

“I betrayed the man who ordered your death.”

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

MATTEO MORETTI WAS NOT EVELYN'S FATHER.

Beneath it:

LORENZO MORETTI WAS NOT MATTEO'S SON.

And beneath that:

THE BLOODLINE ENDS WITH THE GIRL.

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

Evelyn couldn't breathe.

Daniel whispered:

“They found us.”

A loud metallic boom shook the vault.

Then another.

Someone was breaking through the outer door.

Celeste raised her weapon.

Lorenzo pulled Evelyn behind him.

Daniel moved toward the rear wall.

“There's another exit.”

“Where?”

“Behind the shelves.”

Lorenzo grabbed Evelyn's hand.

“Move.”

They ran.

Behind them, the steel door began to buckle.

A voice shouted from the other side.

“EVELYN!”

She recognized it.

The same man from the phone.

Adrian Bell.

“You've spent your whole life wondering why your father disappeared!”

Another explosion.

The door bent inward.

“Tonight…”

Another.

“…you're finally going to meet him.”

The door tore open.

Gunmen flooded the vault.

Lorenzo fired.

Celeste fired.

Daniel fired.

Evelyn ran.

Then she saw something on the floor.

A bloodstained photograph.

She picked it up.

It showed her mother.

Daniel.

Celeste.

And a fourth person.

A young man.

Alive.

Standing beside them.

Evelyn stared.

The man was unmistakable.

He had Lorenzo's eyes.

But the photograph was dated eleven years after Lorenzo's supposed brother had died.

At the bottom, someone had written:

ADRIAN BELL IS NOT THE MAN WHO STOLE THE GIRL.

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

May you like

Three words were written on the back.

Lorenzo did.
