Chapter 13: The Woman in the Graveyard

Rain hammered the windshield as Lorenzo drove through Chicago.
The city looked different now.
Not because the buildings had changed.
Because Evelyn knew what lived behind their walls.
Every courthouse.
Every bank.
Every luxury hotel.
Every private club.
Every black SUV sliding through the wet streets.
Any one of them could belong to the people hunting her.
She sat in the passenger seat, staring at the message on her phone.
COME ALONE.
OR SHE DIES.
The photograph of Celeste remained open.
Blood on her face.
One eye swollen.
But alive.
Evelyn had spent hours believing Celeste was dead.
Now she understood something far more dangerous.
Celeste had survived long enough to become a witness.
And somebody desperately wanted her silenced.
Lorenzo glanced at Evelyn.
“You're thinking too loudly.”
She looked at him.
“You can read minds now?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“You've been staring at the same photograph for ten minutes.”
“She knows who my real mother is.”
Lorenzo tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“We don't know if the message is real.”
“It is.”
“How?”
“Because whoever sent it knew about the cemetery.”
“That doesn't prove Celeste is there.”
“She knew the location.”
“So did you.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You're saying it's a trap.”
“I'm saying everything tonight is a trap.”
She looked through the windshield.
The cemetery appeared ahead.
Iron gates.
Black trees.
Fog crawling between the graves.
Lorenzo slowed.
“You stay in the car.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“You promised.”
“I promised I'd protect you.”
“Then come with me.”
“I will.”
She frowned.
“Then why are you telling me to stay?”
“Because if this is a trap, you're the target.”
“And you're the bait.”
He looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
“See? I'm learning.”
Lorenzo parked outside the cemetery.
They stepped into the rain.
The gate creaked open by itself.
Evelyn stopped.
“That wasn't there before.”
“What?”
“The cemetery gate.”
Lorenzo looked.
A small red light blinked beneath the hinge.
“Motion sensor.”
“Someone knows we're here.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He looked at her.
“Good?”
“At least we know we're not wasting our time.”
They entered.
The cemetery was enormous.
Rows of old stones disappeared into the darkness.
Evelyn followed Lorenzo down a narrow path.
The message had given them one grave.
MORETTI FAMILY — SECTION 7.
They reached it.
Nothing.
No Celeste.
No guards.
No car.
Just rain.
Lorenzo scanned the trees.
“Too quiet.”
Evelyn crouched.
There were fresh footprints in the mud.
Small.
Women's shoes.
They led toward a mausoleum.
Lorenzo followed.
The door stood open.
Inside, a candle burned.
And Celeste was sitting on the floor.
Alive.
Her hands were tied.
Blood covered the side of her face.
Evelyn rushed forward.
“Celeste!”
Lorenzo grabbed her.
“Wait.”
Celeste looked up.
Her eyes widened.
“Evelyn.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Who did this?”
Celeste looked at Lorenzo.
“You shouldn't have come.”
He stared.
“Who took you?”
Celeste's lips trembled.
“Your brother.”
Lorenzo went still.
“Gabriel?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Why?”
“He wanted me to tell you something.”
“What?”
Celeste looked at Evelyn.
“Your mother is alive.”
Evelyn's heart stopped.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“The woman in the chamber?”
“No.”
Celeste shook her head.
“That wasn't her.”
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
“We know.”
“No.”
Celeste's eyes filled.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“The woman you saw wasn't Clara.”
Evelyn stared.
“Then who was she?”
Celeste whispered:
“Your mother.”
Silence.
Lorenzo frowned.
“You said she wasn't.”
“I was wrong.”
“How?”
“Because she fooled me too.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You know my mother.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Celeste swallowed.
“Because she raised me.”
Evelyn froze.
“What?”
“My father died when I was six.”
“Richard Vane.”
“Yes.”
“My mother took me.”
“Why?”
“She said I was safer with her.”
“Where?”
“Here.”
Celeste pointed beneath the mausoleum.
“Underground.”
Lorenzo looked at the floor.
“You're saying there's another archive.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn stared.
“Why did you send me here?”
“I didn't.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Then who sent the message?”
Celeste looked toward the doorway.
“Gabriel.”
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
“Where is he?”
“He's coming.”
A gunshot cracked outside.
Lorenzo shoved Evelyn behind the stone wall.
Celeste ducked.
Bullets punched through the mausoleum door.
“Down!”
Lorenzo fired through the opening.
A man screamed.
Then silence.
Lorenzo looked at Evelyn.
“Stay here.”
He stepped outside.
Evelyn ignored him.
She helped Celeste stand.
“You said my mother raised you.”
“Yes.”
“Tell me everything.”
Celeste's voice trembled.
“She told me you were dangerous.”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“She told you that?”
“Yes.”
“She hated me.”
“No.”
Celeste shook her head.
“She was terrified of you.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew what you would become.”
Evelyn stared.
“What did she think I'd become?”
“Someone who could destroy the Council.”
“She was right.”
Celeste looked at her.
“She wasn't afraid of the Council.”
“Then who?”
“You.”
Evelyn froze.
“Me?”
Celeste nodded.
“She believed that if you ever discovered the truth, you'd destroy everyone.”
“Why?”
“Because your bloodline doesn't just control the empire.”
“What does it control?”
Celeste looked at the floor.
“Memory.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What?”
“The original system wasn't designed to control money.”
“It was designed to control information.”
“Yes.”
“Memory?”
“Yes.”
Celeste pointed toward the hidden chamber.
“The Council had a procedure.”
“What procedure?”
“They could erase specific memories.”
Evelyn's heart dropped.
“My childhood.”
“Yes.”
“Lorenzo's.”
“Yes.”
“Gabriel's.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone's?”
“Everyone they needed.”
Evelyn stared.
“Then how do we remember anything?”
“Because they couldn't erase everything.”
“What couldn't they erase?”
“Emotion.”
Evelyn looked down.
Her memories had always been fragments.
Rain.
A gun.
A man's voice.
A woman crying.
A child screaming.
She had always assumed they were nightmares.
They weren't.
They were memories.
Celeste whispered:
“Your mother knew the procedure was failing.”
“So she sent me away.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Cicero.”
Evelyn stared.
“You knew where I lived?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
“And now?”
Celeste looked at her.
“She's dead.”
Evelyn frowned.
“You just said she's alive.”
Celeste nodded.
“She is.”
“Then why say she's dead?”
“Because she died twice.”
Evelyn stared.
“I don't understand.”
“She died as your mother.”
“And?”
“She became someone else.”
A sound came from beneath the floor.
Lorenzo returned.
“Someone's coming.”
Celeste looked frightened.
“That's him.”
“Gabriel?”
“No.”
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Richard.”
Evelyn froze.
“Richard Vane?”
“Yes.”
“But he's dead.”
Celeste shook her head.
“He isn't.”
The mausoleum doors opened.
An older man stepped inside.
Gray hair.
Scar across his jaw.
Cold gray eyes.
The exact face from the photograph.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Richard Vane.
Alive.
He looked at her.
Then smiled.
“My daughter.”
Evelyn's world collapsed.
Lorenzo raised his weapon.
“Don't move.”
Richard laughed.
“Lorenzo Moretti.”
“You're supposed to be dead.”
“So are most of the people here.”
Evelyn stared.
“You're my father.”
“Yes.”
“You killed Celeste's mother.”
“No.”
“You abandoned us.”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
Richard's expression softened.
“I was taken.”
“By whom?”
“The Council.”
“Why?”
“Because I refused to participate.”
“Participate in what?”
He looked at Celeste.
Then Evelyn.
“The creation of you.”
Evelyn's stomach twisted.
“I wasn't created.”
“You were designed.”
“No.”
“Your mother was selected.”
“My father was selected.”
“Your genes were documented before you were born.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You're lying.”
Richard walked toward her.
Lorenzo blocked him.
“Stop.”
Richard looked at Lorenzo.
“You should ask who selected your mother.”
Lorenzo's expression changed.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“She wasn't selected because of love.”
“Then why?”
“Because she carried the missing bloodline.”
Lorenzo stared.
“What bloodline?”
“The original Moretti.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Richard answered:
“Your mother was the last legitimate heir.”
Lorenzo went silent.
“She wasn't a Vane?”
“No.”
“She wasn't a Carter?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“She was Moretti.”
Evelyn's heart pounded.
“Then why did everyone call her Carter?”
“Because Carter was the name they gave her.”
“Who?”
“The Council.”
“Why?”
“To hide her identity.”
Evelyn suddenly understood.
Her mother's entire life had been fabricated.
Her marriage.
Her name.
Her family.
Everything.
Richard continued:
“And when she had you…”
He paused.
“…the Council realized they'd made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“You inherited both bloodlines.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Moretti and Vane.”
Richard nodded.
“And Bell.”
She stared.
“Bell?”
“Your grandmother was a Bell.”
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked toward Lorenzo.
He looked just as stunned.
“We're related.”
Richard nodded.
“Very.”
Lorenzo's face hardened.
“How?”
“Your father was your mother's cousin.”
Silence.
Evelyn stepped backward.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“That's why the Council arranged the marriage.”
“What marriage?”
“Your parents.”
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“They weren't in love?”
“They were.”
“Then why?”
“Because the Council wanted to unite the bloodlines.”
Lorenzo stared.
“And you?”
“I tried to stop it.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was imprisoned.”
“Where?”
“Under the river.”
Evelyn's breath caught.
“The same place?”
“Yes.”
“Then who rescued you?”
Richard looked toward Celeste.
“She did.”
Celeste shook her head.
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“You don't remember.”
Celeste's face changed.
“What?”
“They erased it.”
She touched her temple.
“I…”
Richard stepped closer.
“You were there.”
Celeste's breathing quickened.
“I was six.”
“Yes.”
“You took me.”
“Yes.”
“You said my father was dead.”
“I lied.”
Celeste began crying.
“Why?”
“Because if the Council knew you had survived, they'd use you.”
She looked at Evelyn.
“Like they used her.”
Evelyn stared.
A memory surfaced.
A little girl.
Blonde hair.
Emerald dress.
Crying in a hallway.
Evelyn had seen her before.
She was Celeste.
They had met as children.
But Evelyn had forgotten.
Celeste remembered something too.
“I knew you.”
Evelyn nodded.
“You did.”
“We played together.”
“Yes.”
“Then they separated us.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard answered:
“Because the Council discovered the two of you had formed a bond.”
“A bond?”
“You were sisters.”
Celeste looked at Evelyn.
“Half-sisters.”
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“You knew.”
Celeste nodded.
“I remembered.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of what they'd do if they knew you remembered.”
A voice came from outside.
“Enough.”
Gabriel stepped into the mausoleum.
Lorenzo immediately raised his weapon.
Gabriel ignored him.
“Everyone has ten minutes.”
“For what?” Evelyn asked.
“To leave.”
“Why?”
“Because the Council has found us.”
Richard looked at him.
“You brought them.”
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“I didn't.”
“You did.”
“No.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You've always been their weapon.”
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
“I was their prisoner.”
“Same thing.”
Gabriel looked at Evelyn.
“You need to come with me.”
“No.”
“You don't understand.”
“I'm beginning to.”
“The Council is coming.”
“Let them.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“They're not coming for you.”
“Then who?”
“They're coming for Lorenzo.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Why?”
Gabriel's face became grim.
“Because he's the final key.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“I thought Evelyn was the final key.”
“She is.”
“Then what am I?”
Gabriel looked at him.
“The lock.”
Silence.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the system can't be destroyed while you're alive.”
Lorenzo stared.
“So they need to kill me.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“No.”
Gabriel continued:
“And they know exactly where you are.”
A distant rumble shook the ground.
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
“They're here.”
The lights outside the mausoleum suddenly turned on.
Dozens of headlights appeared through the trees.
Black SUVs.
Police vehicles.
Armored vans.
Men stepped out.
Hundreds.
Lorenzo looked at Evelyn.
“Stay behind me.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
He stared.
She raised the gun.
“Beside you.”
Lorenzo smiled faintly.
“That's better.”
Gabriel looked at them.
“You're going to need more than guns.”
“What do we need?”
He pointed toward the ground.
“The original archive.”
Evelyn looked at the floor.
“How do we open it?”
Richard smiled.
“You already did.”
“What?”
“The moment you walked into this cemetery.”
The ground beneath them began to move.
Stone shifted.
A hidden staircase opened.
A cold blue light rose from below.
Gabriel stepped backward.
“Go.”
“What about you?”
“I'll hold them.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
He looked at her.
“For once, let me protect my sister.”
She hesitated.
Then took his hand.
“Don't die.”
Gabriel smiled.
“I'll try.”
Lorenzo grabbed Evelyn.
“We're going.”
They descended.
Behind them, gunfire erupted across the cemetery.
The underground passage stretched beneath the graves.
At the bottom stood a steel door.
Richard's voice came through the darkness.
“That's where the truth is.”
Evelyn touched the door.
It opened.
Inside was a room filled with photographs.
Thousands of them.
Every stage of her life.
Her birth.
Her childhood.
Her first day at school.
Her mother's funeral.
Her first day at the Obsidian.
Every moment.
Every year.
Every secret.
Evelyn stared.
“They watched me.”
Lorenzo stood beside her.
“Yes.”
A screen activated.
A video began.
A younger version of Evelyn's mother appeared.
She was holding baby Evelyn.
And beside her stood Richard.
Then another woman entered.
Clara.
Then Vincent.
Then Samuel.
All four stood around the baby.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this…”
She paused.
“…they failed.”
Evelyn's heart stopped.
Her mother continued:
“They will tell you that you were created to control the empire.”
“They will tell you that your blood makes you special.”
“They will tell you that you're the heir.”
“None of it is true.”
Evelyn stared.
Her mother's expression became serious.
“You were never meant to inherit the empire.”
A pause.
“You were meant to end it.”
The video stopped.
Lorenzo looked at Evelyn.
She whispered:
“Then what is the final key?”
The screen turned on again.
One sentence appeared.
THE FINAL KEY IS NOT BLOOD.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Another line appeared.
IT IS CHOICE.
Then a final message appeared.
AND SOMEONE HAS ALREADY MADE THEIRS.
The door behind them slammed shut.
Lorenzo spun.
Locked.
Evelyn looked toward the screen.
A photograph appeared.
Gabriel.
Standing beside the Council.
Holding a gun to his own head.
Underneath it:
YOUR BROTHER HAS CHOSEN.
Then the message changed.
HE CHOSE YOU.
Evelyn's face went white.
A second photograph appeared.
Gabriel kneeling in the cemetery.
Surrounded by armed men.
And behind them stood Clara.
Alive.
Smiling.
She held a gun against Gabriel's head.
The final message appeared:
COME BACK UP.
OR YOUR BROTHER DIES.
Evelyn turned toward the sealed door.
Lorenzo grabbed her hand.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“We have to go.”
“We don't know if it's real.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Evelyn stared at Gabriel's photograph.
“Because this time…”
May you like
Her voice hardened.
“…I'm not leaving anyone behind.”
