CHAPTER 16 — THE SISTER WHO REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

The call ended.
But nobody moved.
The silence afterward was heavier than any scream.
Claire stood frozen, still holding the phone against her ear.
As if keeping it there could somehow bring Sophie back.
As if the connection had not really disappeared.
As if the last words had not been Richard's voice.
End the call.
Ethan slowly approached.
"Claire."
She lowered the phone.
Her face had changed.
Not broken.
Not afraid.
Determined.
"He has her."
Nobody questioned who she meant.
Because everyone knew.
Richard Harrington had spent six years hiding the truth.
Six years controlling the story.
Six years believing nobody could reach the one person who could destroy his plans.
But now Sophie was no longer hidden.
And neither was Claire.
Daniel looked troubled.
"This is exactly what I feared."
Ethan turned toward him.
"What?"
"Richard will not negotiate anymore."
Claire looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel's expression became serious.
"It means he knows he has lost control."
"And desperate people become unpredictable."
The search began immediately.
Ethan contacted every person he trusted.
Private investigators.
Former prosecutors.
Cybersecurity specialists.
People who owed him favors.
Within thirty minutes, the entire operation changed.
It was no longer about proving Richard's crimes.
It was about finding Sophie.
Alive.
Safe.
Before Richard decided he had no reason to keep her hidden.
Claire sat in Ethan's office, staring at the old photograph.
The photograph from the safe deposit box.
Two sisters.
Two babies.
Two lives separated before they even began.
"I should have known."
Ethan looked at her.
"Known what?"
"That something was missing."
"You were a child."
"I still felt it."
She touched the photograph.
"I always felt like there was a piece of my life I couldn't remember."
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"Because there was."
Claire looked up.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel hesitated.
Ethan noticed.
"Daniel."
The former financial consultant nodded slowly.
"You deserve the truth."
Six years earlier.
Before Daniel disappeared.
Before Richard's plan reached its final stage.
Daniel had discovered something inside Alexander Blackwell's estate documents.
A hidden clause.
A protection agreement.
And a warning.
Alexander had written:
If anyone attempts to control both daughters through marriage, business, or legal pressure, the inheritance will be frozen permanently.
Richard knew.
That was why he changed his strategy.
He couldn't simply take the money.
He couldn't threaten Claire.
He couldn't force access.
He had to make Claire trust him.
Love him.
Marry him.
Then convince her to voluntarily cooperate.
But Sophie was different.
Sophie remembered.
Sophie knew what happened.
And that made her dangerous.
"Why?"
Claire asked.
"What did Sophie remember?"
Daniel looked at her.
"The night your father disappeared."
The room became silent.
Claire felt cold.
"My father disappeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"Everyone told you he died."
"They were wrong."
Claire stared.
"What really happened?"
Daniel looked down.
"He was betrayed."
Richard sat across from Sophie in a private room.
Not a prison.
Not a warehouse.
A luxury apartment.
A place designed to look safe.
That was Richard's method.
He never forced people immediately.
He created the illusion of comfort.
Sophie sat across from him.
She looked remarkably like Claire.
Same eyes.
Same expression when angry.
The resemblance irritated Richard.
Because every time he looked at Sophie, he saw the one thing he failed to control.
The truth.
"You shouldn't have called her."
Sophie said nothing.
Richard leaned back.
"I wanted to make this easier."
"For who?"
The question surprised him.
"What?"
"For you?"
Sophie looked directly at him.
"Or for me?"
Richard studied her.
"You don't understand the situation."
"No."
She smiled slightly.
"I understand perfectly."
"You destroyed my sister's life."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Your sister was always going to find out."
"Then why hide it?"
"Because she was safer."
Sophie laughed.
"That's the same lie everyone tells."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Be careful."
"No."
Sophie leaned forward.
"You be careful."
"Because Claire is not the woman you left on those stairs."
"And I'm not the child you thought you could hide."
For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.
Because Sophie was not afraid.
Back at Ethan's office, a breakthrough arrived.
The cybersecurity team found something.
A hidden communication channel.
Connected to Richard.
But not controlled by him.
Ethan looked at the information.
"Who is this?"
The analyst shook his head.
"We don't know."
"Every connection is masked."
"Every payment is hidden."
Daniel stepped closer.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
"What?"
Ethan asked.
Daniel pointed at the screen.
"That symbol."
Everyone looked.
A small digital signature.
Almost invisible.
Daniel whispered:
"I know who that belongs to."
"Who?"
He looked at Claire.
"The Blackwell Foundation."
Claire frowned.
"My father's organization?"
"Yes."
"But why would they be connected to Richard?"
Daniel's face became pale.
"Because someone inside the foundation has been helping him."
The revelation created a new problem.
Richard was not acting alone.
But neither was Claire.
Because someone from Alexander's side was still protecting him.
Someone who had access to the same resources.
Someone who knew how to disappear.
Ethan immediately began tracing internal records.
Then he found something.
A name.
A board member.
A trusted advisor.
Someone who had been with the Blackwell Foundation for twenty years.
Claire looked at the screen.
"No."
Ethan looked at her.
"You know him?"
She nodded slowly.
"Everyone knows him."
"Who?"
Claire whispered:
"Marcus Vale."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Impossible."
"Who is Marcus?"
Ethan asked.
Claire looked at him.
"He was my father's closest friend."
That night, Richard received a visit.
Marcus Vale entered the room calmly.
No fear.
No urgency.
Unlike Richard.
"You let Sophie contact Claire."
Richard immediately stood.
"You knew?"
Marcus smiled.
"I know everything."
Richard stared.
"Then why didn't you stop her?"
"Because I wanted to see what Claire would do."
Richard's expression darkened.
"You are testing me."
"No."
Marcus walked closer.
"I'm testing her."
Richard looked confused.
"Why?"
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Because Alexander was right."
"What?"
"Power should never belong to one person."
Richard laughed.
"You helped me for six years."
"Did I?"
The answer shocked him.
Marcus continued:
"I helped create the situation."
"But I never promised you the ending."
Richard's face changed.
"You betrayed me."
Marcus smiled.
"No."
"I simply stopped protecting you."
The next morning, Ethan received a file.
Anonymous.
Inside:
A location.
A time.
And one sentence.
SOPHIE IS NOT THE ONLY SECRET RICHARD HID.
Claire read it.
"What else?"
Ethan opened the second attachment.
A photograph appeared.
Richard.
Standing beside Claire's father.
The date was one month before Alexander disappeared.
But that wasn't what shocked them.
It was the person standing beside Richard.
A person everyone believed had died.
A person Claire never expected to see.
Elizabeth Harrington.
Alive.
And holding a document.
Daniel whispered:
"That's impossible."
Ethan stared at the photograph.
"No."
He looked at Claire.
"It means your mother didn't just survive."
"She was involved."
Claire felt her heart sink.
May you like
Because the one person she wanted to believe had protected her...
might have been hiding the biggest secret of all.
