CHAPTER 13 — THE DEADLINE

Richard Harrington stood outside the storage room door.

The same man who had once walked into every room believing he owned it.

The same man who had convinced board members, investors, and even Claire herself that he was always three steps ahead.

But now he stood in a dark hallway.

Without his company.

Without his influence.

Without the certainty that had defined him for years.

And for the first time, Claire saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

Because Richard knew the truth was no longer hidden.

The door between them was the only thing separating him from the collapse of everything he built.

"Richard."

Claire's voice echoed through the storage room.

She didn't sound frightened.

That surprised him.

He expected tears.

Anger.

A desperate demand for answers.

Instead, she sounded calm.

Almost disappointed.

"Claire."

His voice softened.

"I know this looks bad."

Ethan almost laughed.

Almost.

But he didn't.

Because Richard still didn't understand.

That was the most dangerous thing about him.

Even now, he believed he could explain his way out.

"You came here alone?" Ethan asked.

A pause.

Richard answered:

"Yes."

Victor Blackwell looked toward the door.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Victor shook his head.

"Richard never comes alone."

Claire frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victor looked at Ethan.

"It means someone else is already inside."

The room changed instantly.

Ethan reached for the emergency flashlight on the table.

"Daniel."

"I'm fine."

"Stay with Claire."

Daniel nodded.

The years of fear had not disappeared from his face.

But something else had replaced it.

Determination.

He was done running.

Richard entered the storage room slowly.

His hands were visible.

A performance.

Ethan noticed immediately.

"You expect us to believe you're here peacefully?"

Richard looked at him.

"You always did think the worst of me."

Ethan's expression remained cold.

"No."

"I thought exactly enough of you."

Claire stepped forward.

"Why are you here?"

Richard looked at her.

For a moment, something almost human appeared on his face.

Then it disappeared.

"Because you don't understand what you've uncovered."

Claire held the photograph.

"My entire life was hidden from me."

Richard looked at it.

"You think you know the truth?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"You know fragments."

Victor stepped forward.

"Enough fragments to destroy you."

Richard looked at him.

The hatred between them was immediate.

"You should have stayed gone."

Victor smiled slightly.

"And you should have never married Claire."

The words landed heavily.

Claire looked at Richard.

"Is that why?"

"What?"

"Why you chose me?"

Richard said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Claire nodded slowly.

"I was never your wife."

"I was an opportunity."

"Claire..."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"I need to hear you say it."

Richard looked away.

Ethan watched him carefully.

Because Richard's silence was not guilt.

It was calculation.

"I loved you."

Claire almost smiled.

A sad smile.

"You loved what I represented."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Then explain."

She stepped closer.

"Explain why you met my grandfather before our wedding."

Richard froze.

Explain why Daniel disappeared.

Explain why my mother lied.

Explain why you needed the divorce before my daughter was born.

The room became silent.

Because Claire had finally said everything out loud.

Richard had no answer.

Suddenly, Ethan's phone received a signal.

One message.

From his security team.

INTRUDER DETECTED. EAST WING.

Ethan looked up.

"Everyone move."

The lights flickered.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Victor's face changed.

"They're here."

Richard looked toward the entrance.

For a moment, even he looked surprised.

"You brought them?"

Claire looked at him.

"You don't control them?"

Richard didn't answer.

That was all she needed.

The truth became clearer.

Richard was not the master of this.

He was also being used.

The first person appeared at the doorway.

A man in his forties.

Dark suit.

Professional.

Cold expression.

He looked directly at Victor.

"You're making this difficult."

Victor stepped forward.

"Who hired you?"

The man smiled.

"You already know."

Richard looked away.

Claire noticed.

"Richard."

He didn't respond.

"Who?"

The man answered.

"Your husband knows."

Claire looked at Richard.

The man continued.

"The question is whether he knows who he was working for."

The words changed everything.

Richard looked angry.

"Enough."

The man ignored him.

"You were always ambitious, Richard."

"But you were never important."

Richard's face turned pale.

Claire saw it.

For the first time, she understood.

Richard Harrington had spent years pretending to be powerful.

But someone above him existed.

Someone who had guided everything.

Ethan moved toward the man.

"You have five seconds to explain why you're here."

The man smiled.

"You think this is a courtroom?"

"No."

Ethan answered.

"I think this is private property."

"And I think you just made a mistake."

The man's smile disappeared.

Because he recognized Ethan.

Everyone did.

Ethan Cole.

The lawyer who destroyed companies.

The man who never threatened.

Never shouted.

Never lost control.

The man simply collected evidence.

And ended people.

The intruder stepped back slightly.

Interesting.

"You really are as dangerous as they say."

Ethan replied:

"No."

"I am worse."

The confrontation ended when Ethan's security team entered.

The intruder escaped through the side exit.

But not before leaving behind something.

A small device.

A recording.

Ethan picked it up.

"What is that?"

Victor looked terrified.

"Don't play it."

Everyone looked at him.

"Why?"

Victor whispered:

"Because that recording will change everything."

Back at the guest residence, Ethan analyzed the device.

The recording contained only one conversation.

But the voices were enough.

Richard.

And another person.

A person nobody expected.

The recording began.

Richard's voice:

"The wedding is tomorrow."

The other voice:

"Good."

"Once she becomes your wife, access becomes easier."

Richard:

"And if she finds out?"

The other voice:

"She won't."

A pause.

Then:

"Because Claire trusts you."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Claire looked at Richard.

But Richard wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at the floor.

Because he recognized the voice.

And so did Victor.

"Who is it?"

Claire asked.

Victor answered quietly.

"The person who created this entire plan."

Ethan looked at Richard.

"Tell us."

Richard remained silent.

Claire stepped closer.

"Richard."

He finally looked at her.

And for the first time...

he looked broken.

"The person behind this..."

He swallowed.

"Is someone you loved."

Claire froze.

"Who?"

Richard closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

"Your mother."

The revelation destroyed the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because Elizabeth Harrington had been the one person Claire believed protected her.

Her mother.

The woman who raised her.

The woman who died before seeing this nightmare unfold.

But now Richard was saying she was involved.

Ethan immediately shook his head.

"No."

Richard looked at him.

"You don't want it to be true."

"Because then you have to accept that everyone lied."

Claire stared at Richard.

"You're lying."

"Maybe."

Richard admitted.

"But ask yourself something."

"Why did your mother disappear?"

Claire felt cold.

"She died."

Richard looked at her.

"Did she?"

Silence.

Victor stepped back.

Because he knew.

The truth had reached the point where nobody could pretend anymore.

That night, Ethan received official confirmation.

The prosecutor had set a deadline.

Forty-eight hours.

Within forty-eight hours, they would file charges.

Against Vanessa.

Against Richard.

And potentially against anyone connected.

But Ethan knew something.

The next forty-eight hours were not about the courtroom.

They were about survival.

Because someone powerful had realized Claire knew too much.

And they were running out of time.

At midnight, Claire received a message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

YOUR MOTHER LEFT YOU A FINAL WARNING.

Then an attachment appeared.

A video file.

Recorded six years earlier.

The title:

FOR CLAIRE — WATCH THIS BEFORE THEY FIND YOU.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her hands trembled.

Because the woman in the video...

May you like

was her mother.

And she was alive.
