CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO NEVER LOST A CASE

The courthouse lights were still burning long after the crowd disappeared.

But the image remained.

Claire Harrington lying on the cold marble steps.

Her blood staining the stone.

Her hand protecting the child she had fought so hard to bring into the world.

And Ethan Cole kneeling beside her.

The entire city had seen it.

The cameras had captured every second.

Vanessa Sterling's hand.

Claire's fall.

Richard Harrington standing motionless.

The silence afterward.

That silence was what terrified people the most.

Because everyone who knew Ethan Cole understood one thing.

He was never loud when he was angry.

The loud ones were the people who lost control.

Ethan was different.

He became quieter.

More precise.

More dangerous.

Inside the private conference room of Cole & Associates, Ethan stood alone beside the window.

The city stretched beneath him.

Thousands of lights.

Thousands of people.

Thousands of secrets.

His phone continued vibrating.

Messages from reporters.

Calls from prosecutors.

Requests from lawyers.

Everyone wanted a statement.

Everyone wanted to know what Ethan Cole would do next.

He ignored every single one.

Because right now, there was only one person who mattered.

His sister.

Claire.

The hospital room was dark except for the soft glow from the machines.

Claire had not opened her eyes for six hours.

The doctors had stabilized her.

The baby was still alive.

But the next twenty-four hours were critical.

Ethan sat beside her bed.

For the first time in years, the most feared attorney in the state looked completely powerless.

He could defeat corporations.

He could destroy billion-dollar fraud schemes.

He could make executives confess in courtrooms.

But he couldn't force his sister to wake up.

"Claire..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"You always hated hospitals."

A small, painful smile crossed his face.

"You used to say they smelled like fear."

He looked at her motionless hand.

"You were right."

The door opened.

A doctor stepped inside.

"Mr. Cole."

Ethan immediately stood.

"How is she?"

The doctor removed his glasses.

"Physically, she's stable."

Ethan waited.

He knew there was always a second sentence after that.

"But emotionally..."

The doctor paused.

"Her body survived the trauma. Now we need to make sure the stress doesn't trigger complications."

Ethan nodded.

"She will survive."

It wasn't a question.

It was a promise.

The doctor looked at him carefully.

"Mr. Cole, I know you're her brother, but I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"Your sister is carrying more than a child."

Ethan looked back at Claire.

"She's carrying everything they tried to take from her."

The doctor said nothing.

Because he understood.

Everyone understood.

This wasn't only an accident.

It was an attack.

And attacks had consequences.

Across the city, Richard Harrington watched the news report from his private office.

The television showed the same footage repeatedly.

Vanessa pushing Claire.

Claire falling.

The crowd screaming.

Richard's expression remained cold.

But his hands betrayed him.

They were shaking.

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

Vanessa stood near the fireplace.

She had changed clothes.

Removed the expensive dress.

Fixed her hair.

Trying desperately to look like an innocent victim.

"It was an accident."

Richard turned toward her.

"An accident?"

His voice sharpened.

"You pushed her in front of cameras."

Vanessa's face changed.

"You were supposed to help me."

Richard stared at her.

"You said she would stumble."

"She was supposed to."

The room became silent.

Richard looked away.

For the first time, he understood something.

They had crossed a line.

Divorce was one thing.

Manipulation was another.

But pushing a pregnant woman down courthouse steps?

That created a monster.

And Ethan Cole was that monster.

"You don't understand who Ethan is," Richard said quietly.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"He's just a lawyer."

Richard looked at her.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"He's the reason three billionaires lost their companies."

"He destroyed a senator's career."

"He exposed a family empire that existed for seventy years."

"He doesn't threaten people."

"He proves things."

Vanessa's confidence disappeared slightly.

"So what?"

Richard walked toward the window.

"So now we find every weakness before he finds ours."

At midnight, Ethan returned to his office.

He opened the file marked:

HARRINGTON DIVORCE.

But he didn't start with the obvious evidence.

He started with the things Richard thought nobody would notice.

Because Ethan knew something most people didn't.

The biggest secrets were rarely hidden.

They were buried under ordinary details.

A payment.

A signature.

A meeting.

A forgotten conversation.

He opened the first bank record.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His eyes narrowed.

Something was wrong.

The timeline didn't match.

Richard and Vanessa had not started planning after the affair began.

They had started before.

Much earlier.

Ethan printed another document.

A property transfer.

Then another.

A company ownership change.

Then another.

His expression slowly changed.

"This wasn't a divorce plan."

He whispered.

"This was an extraction."

Someone had been moving assets.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Piece by piece.

Richard wasn't simply trying to leave Claire.

He was trying to leave with everything.

The house.

The investments.

The family trust.

Even assets Claire had inherited from her parents.

But there was one problem.

A problem Richard didn't know existed.

Claire wasn't as powerless as everyone believed.

Because six months before the courthouse attack...

She had changed her legal agreements.

Ethan found the document.

And smiled for the first time that night.

"Claire..."

He leaned back.

"You were already fighting back."

The door opened.

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Cole."

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

"We found something."

"What?"

The assistant placed a folder on the desk.

"A witness."

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A courthouse employee.

A woman standing near the staircase.

Watching.

Recording.

Ethan stared at the image.

"Who is she?"

His assistant swallowed.

"That's the interesting part."

"She doesn't work for the courthouse."

"She wasn't a reporter."

"She wasn't a lawyer."

Ethan looked closer.

The woman was holding a phone.

And pointing it directly at Richard.

"Find her."

His assistant nodded.

"Already trying."

Ethan closed the folder.

Because suddenly he understood.

The push wasn't the beginning.

It was the moment someone wanted everyone to see.

But behind it...

There was something much bigger.

Something Richard and Vanessa had been hiding.

Something someone else had been watching.

Ethan looked once more at the hospital monitor recording Claire's heartbeat.

Then at the evidence on his desk.

"Now it's my turn."

And for the first time...

Richard Harrington realized he might have chosen the wrong enemy.
