CHAPTER 14 — THE MOTHER WHO WAS NEVER GONE

Claire stared at the video file.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The screen showed only a black background.
A timestamp.
Six years earlier.
The date was impossible.
Three days after the wedding.
Three years before Elizabeth Harrington’s supposed death.
Ethan stood beside Claire.
"Are you sure you want to watch this?"
Claire didn't look away.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"But I need to."
She pressed play.
The video loaded.
At first, there was only darkness.
Then a woman appeared.
Elizabeth Harrington.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting alone in a room Claire didn't recognize.
Her mother's face filled the screen.
And for the first time in years...
Claire heard her voice.
"Claire."
The single word broke something inside her.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
Elizabeth continued.
"If you are watching this, then something has gone wrong."
She paused.
A deep sadness crossed her face.
"And it means I failed to protect you."
Claire immediately shook her head.
"No."
The word came out before she realized she said it.
Ethan looked at her.
But Claire couldn't stop watching.
"I need you to understand something."
Elizabeth looked directly into the camera.
"I never wanted you to know this way."
"I wanted you to have a normal life."
"A life where you never had to carry the weight of our family's secrets."
Claire's eyes filled.
Her mother continued.
"But Richard Harrington was never the man he pretended to be."
Ethan exchanged a glance with Daniel.
The same truth they had been uncovering for days.
But hearing it from Elizabeth made it different.
Personal.
"Richard discovered the Blackwell inheritance before your wedding."
"He discovered your father's identity."
"And he discovered that you were the only person who could legally unlock what Alexander left behind."
Claire froze.
Her father.
The name she had only learned hours earlier.
Alexander Blackwell.
Elizabeth took a breath.
"I tried to stop the marriage."
"I tried to convince you."
"But Richard was careful."
"He isolated you slowly."
"He made you believe everyone who questioned him was against your happiness."
Claire closed her eyes.
Because that was exactly what happened.
Every warning.
Every concern.
Every uncomfortable conversation.
Richard had turned them into attacks against him.
Elizabeth continued.
"The day before your wedding, I confronted him."
"He told me something I will never forget."
The video became silent for a moment.
Then Elizabeth whispered:
'Claire trusts me.'
"He said those words with confidence."
"He knew your greatest strength."
"Your ability to believe in people."
"He used it against you."
Claire wiped away a tear.
But she refused to look away.
Then Elizabeth said something that changed everything.
"Richard was not the only person involved."
Ethan leaned closer.
The room became still.
"There was someone else."
"Someone inside our family."
"Someone who helped him gain access to information he should never have had."
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then Victor.
"Who?"
The video continued.
But Elizabeth's voice became weaker.
"I don't know how much time I have."
"I don't know who I can trust."
"But Claire..."
Her eyes filled.
"If something happens to me, do not believe anyone who tells you I left willingly."
The screen froze.
Everyone stopped breathing.
Because that was not a goodbye.
It was a warning.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Claire remained frozen.
Her entire understanding of her mother had changed.
Not because Elizabeth betrayed her.
Because Elizabeth had been fighting a battle Claire never knew existed.
"My mother was alive."
Ethan looked at her.
"Claire..."
"No."
She stood slowly.
"Everyone told me she died."
Daniel looked down.
"I was told the same."
Victor's expression was grim.
"Because that was the story they wanted everyone to believe."
Claire turned.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
That was the problem.
They were running out of people they could trust.
Across the city, Richard watched the same video.
But he was not surprised.
Because he knew.
Elizabeth had prepared for this.
He sat alone in a dark room.
His phone rested beside him.
The empire he built was collapsing.
But now something worse had happened.
Claire knew her mother was alive.
And if Claire found Elizabeth...
everything would be exposed.
The door opened.
Richard looked up.
The same mysterious figure from the parking garage entered.
"You failed."
Richard's expression hardened.
"I didn't fail."
"You lost control."
"No."
Richard stood.
"I underestimated Claire."
The figure smiled.
"That is what everyone does."
Richard looked angry.
"What do you want?"
"The same thing as before."
"Silence."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"You think you can silence Claire?"
"No."
The figure stepped closer.
"I think you can."
Richard stared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you still have one thing she wants."
Richard understood.
A bargaining chip.
His expression changed.
"Her mother."
The figure nodded.
"Find Elizabeth."
"Before Claire does."
At the guest residence, Ethan began tracing the video.
The metadata revealed something important.
The file had not been uploaded recently.
It had been scheduled.
Created six years earlier.
And delivered automatically.
Claire looked at him.
"She knew."
"Yes."
"She knew one day I would find this."
Ethan nodded.
"Your mother planned for this."
Claire looked at the screen.
A thought crossed her mind.
"What if she planned something else?"
Ethan looked at her.
"What?"
"What if she left more?"
The question changed everything.
Because Elizabeth was not the kind of person who left only one clue.
She would have prepared.
She would have protected.
She would have hidden pieces of the truth.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"Your mother had a safe deposit box."
Everyone looked at him.
Claire turned.
"What?"
Daniel swallowed.
"I remembered something."
"Before I disappeared, Elizabeth asked me to help her secure documents."
"She said they were for Claire."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I thought the box was destroyed."
Ethan immediately stood.
"Where?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Downtown."
The bank was nearly empty when they arrived.
Ethan had already arranged emergency access.
Claire stood beside him as the manager brought out the old box.
The key was inside the envelope Elizabeth left behind.
The lock clicked.
Everyone expected documents.
Instead...
there was a single letter.
A small photograph.
And a flash drive.
Claire picked up the photograph first.
Her breath stopped.
It showed her mother.
Her father.
And a baby.
Not Claire.
Another baby.
A child.
About the same age Claire would have been.
Ethan noticed her reaction.
"What is it?"
Claire turned the photograph over.
A name was written on the back.
Sophie.
Daniel went pale.
"No."
Victor looked shocked.
"That's impossible."
Claire looked at them.
"Who is Sophie?"
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
"Your sister."
The words echoed through the room.
"My..."
Claire couldn't finish.
"Your twin."
At that exact moment, Richard received a message.
A photograph.
The safe deposit box.
Claire standing beside Ethan.
Underneath:
SHE KNOWS ABOUT SOPHIE.
Richard's face lost all color.
Because Sophie was not just a secret.
Sophie was the reason everything began.
The reason Alexander Blackwell disappeared.
The reason Elizabeth ran.
The reason Richard made his first move.
He immediately called someone.
The call connected.
"Find Claire."
A pause.
"Why?"
Richard looked at the photograph.
"Because if she finds Sophie before we do..."
His voice became a whisper.
"We lose everything."
Back at the bank, Claire opened the final item.
The letter from her mother.
Only one sentence was written on the first page.
Claire, if you have found this, then your sister is already in danger.
Claire stopped breathing.
May you like
The next line appeared.
And Richard Harrington knows where she is.
