CHAPTER 15 — THE SISTER HIDDEN FROM THE WORLD

Claire read the sentence again.

Then again.

Her mind refused to process it.

Richard Harrington knows where she is.

Not knew.

Not knew before.

Knows.

Present tense.

Her fingers tightened around the letter.

"My sister is alive."

Nobody answered immediately.

Because everyone in the room understood what that meant.

For six years, Claire had believed she was an only child.

She had grown up believing her family had been broken apart by tragedy.

Now she was discovering something far more painful.

Her family had been broken apart by a decision.

A choice.

A secret.

Ethan's voice was gentle.

Claire looked at him.

For once, he wasn't acting like an attorney.

He was her brother.

The person trying to help her survive another impossible truth.

She continued.

Claire,

I know this will hurt you.

I know you will wonder why I kept this from you.

But please understand.

I did not hide your sister because I didn't love her.

I hid her because someone wanted her gone.

Claire stopped.

Her eyes moved quickly across the page.

When Alexander discovered the truth about his business empire, he also discovered that powerful people were searching for his children.

Not because of who they were.

Because of what they inherited.

Claire looked up.

"Children?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Your father had two heirs."

Claire stared at him.

"Me and Sophie."

Victor spoke quietly.

"The Blackwell family structure required both children to remain protected."

"Why?"

"Because Alexander knew one person controlling everything would become a target."

Ethan looked at the letter.

"Continue."

Claire did.

Your father believed Richard would eventually come for you.

But he was wrong.

Richard came for both of you.

Claire's breathing became heavier.

The room felt smaller.

Her entire marriage.

Her entire life.

Everything connected.

Sophie was taken away to protect her.

You were left with me because I believed I could hide you in plain sight.

I failed.

A tear fell from Claire's face.

Not because her mother left.

Because she realized Elizabeth had been fighting alone.

Richard learned about Sophie after the wedding.

That was when everything changed.

He stopped caring about the trust.

He became afraid.

Because Sophie knows the truth about Alexander's final decision.

Claire looked up.

"What decision?"

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan took the letter.

He read the next section.

His face changed.

"What?"

Claire immediately looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Ethan hesitated.

That frightened her.

"Ethan."

He handed the letter back.

Claire read.

Alexander created a final inheritance agreement.

The person who controls the empire is not the oldest child.

Not the strongest.

Not the person with the most money.

The person chosen by both sisters.

Claire froze.

"The sisters?"

Daniel nodded.

"Both of you together."

Ethan understood immediately.

"Richard can't control everything unless both heirs cooperate."

Victor looked grim.

"Which means Sophie is the missing piece."

Claire stared at the letter.

"He spent six years looking for her."

"Yes."

"And he married me because he thought I could lead him to her."

"Yes."

The answer broke something inside her.

Not because it was new.

Because it confirmed her worst fear.

Richard had never seen her as a person.

Only a path.

A doorway.

A key.

Meanwhile, Richard was already moving.

He sat inside a private vehicle outside the city.

His phone rested against his hand.

The person sitting across from him watched silently.

"You found out."

Richard looked up.

"Yes."

"And?"

"Claire knows about Sophie."

The other person sighed.

"That complicates things."

Richard laughed.

"Complicates?"

His voice was bitter.

"My entire life is collapsing."

The person remained calm.

"You should have handled Claire years ago."

Richard's expression darkened.

"Do not talk to me like this."

"Why?"

A slight smile appeared.

"Because I know the truth?"

Richard looked away.

The person continued.

"You always thought you were the mastermind."

"But you were only useful."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Careful."

"No."

The person leaned closer.

"You need to understand something."

"The reason Claire survived is because she was never as weak as you believed."

Richard said nothing.

Because deep down...

he knew.

That was the mistake.

He thought Claire's kindness meant weakness.

He thought her trust meant stupidity.

He thought her love made her easy to control.

He was wrong.

At Ethan's residence, the team began searching for Sophie.

The problem was simple.

There were almost no records.

No public birth certificate.

No school history.

No medical records.

Nothing.

Like she had never existed.

"How does someone disappear completely?"

Claire asked.

Victor answered:

"With enough money and powerful enough people."

Ethan looked at the database.

"Richard?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"Then who?"

Daniel's face became serious.

"The person who helped Elizabeth hide Sophie."

Claire stepped closer.

"Who?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Someone you know."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

Daniel slowly answered.

"Your uncle."

Claire froze.

"My mother's brother?"

"Yes."

"The man who raised me after my mother died?"

Daniel nodded.

Claire stepped back.

"No."

Ethan immediately noticed.

"Claire?"

She looked disturbed.

"I remember him."

"Remember what?"

"He always hated Richard."

Ethan frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"He hated him before anyone knew anything."

She looked at Daniel.

"Why?"

Daniel answered quietly:

"Because he knew what Richard had done."

That night, Claire received a call.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then Ethan saw the screen.

"Answer."

She did.

A woman's voice came through.

Weak.

Shaking.

"Claire?"

Claire froze.

Something about the voice felt familiar.

"Who is this?"

The woman breathed heavily.

"My name is Sophie."

The world stopped.

Claire couldn't speak.

The woman continued.

"I don't have much time."

Claire gripped the phone.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Somewhere Richard can't reach me."

Claire's eyes filled.

"How do I know you're really my sister?"

Silence.

Then the woman said something only family could know.

"When you were five, you had a blue blanket with a missing corner."

Claire stopped breathing.

Only one person knew that.

Her mother.

"You cried every night when it disappeared."

The woman laughed softly.

"And I slept beside you until you stopped being afraid."

Claire covered her mouth.

Because suddenly she remembered.

A second child's hand.

A small voice.

A promise.

A memory she thought was imaginary.

"Sophie..."

"I'm sorry, Claire."

The voice broke.

"I wanted to find you."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because Richard found me first."

Claire's heart stopped.

"What?"

The line became quiet.

Then Sophie whispered:

"Claire..."

"He knows I'm calling you."

A sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Sophie gasped.

"No."

Claire stood instantly.

"Sophie?"

The call remained connected.

A man's voice appeared in the background.

Cold.

Familiar.

Richard.

"End the call."

Claire froze.

Then the line went dead.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan immediately grabbed his jacket.

Claire looked at him.

"He found her."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Claire's face hardened.

For the first time, she was not fighting only for herself.

Not for money.

Not for revenge.

For her sister.

And Richard Harrington had just made the one mistake he could never undo.

He had threatened the wrong family.
