Chapter 7 - The Detective Who Buried the Truth

Daniel Ross lived alone.

A quiet house.

A quiet street.

A quiet life.

The kind of life people built when they were running from something.

When Logan arrived, Daniel opened the door before he knocked.

Almost like he expected him.

“You found Maya.”

Logan stopped.

“How do you know that?”

Daniel sighed.

“Because Emily always believed you would.”

The anger came quickly.

“You knew?”

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.”

“You knew my sister was alive?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Maya existed?”

“Yes.”

Each answer felt like another betrayal.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because Emily made me promise.”

Logan laughed bitterly.

“So everyone gets to decide what I deserve to know?”

Daniel accepted the anger.

“You’re right.”

That surprised Logan.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

Inside the house, Daniel showed him the truth.

A hidden room.

Files.

Photos.

Evidence.

Everything he had collected over the years.

“I never stopped investigating.”

Logan looked around.

“Then why pretend?”

“Because Adrian Carter had people everywhere.”

Daniel opened a file.

“Police.”

“Courts.”

“Child services.”

“Medical systems.”

The entire system had been compromised.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough that exposing Adrian without proof would have destroyed innocent people.

“Emily discovered the network.”

Daniel continued.

“She tried to gather evidence.”

“What happened?”

“She was found.”

Logan froze.

“By Adrian?”

Daniel nodded.

“But she escaped.”

The truth was Emily had planned everything.

The hidden basement.

The files.

Maya’s identity.

Finding Logan.

Every step.

“She knew Toby’s case was connected.”

Logan looked up.

“What?”

Daniel handed him a document.

The original investigation report.

Not the official version.

The real one.

Toby’s injuries were not caused by his stepfather alone.

Someone had been covering for him.

Someone had changed medical records.

Someone had pressured witnesses.

Logan felt sick.

All these years, he thought he failed Toby.

But the truth was worse.

Someone had made sure Toby’s truth stayed hidden.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered:

“Adrian Carter.”

The same man everyone trusted.

The child welfare expert.

The respected doctor.

The man who built a career protecting children.

He had been hiding the truth.

Logan stared at the file.

Ten years of guilt disappeared.

Not completely.

But enough.

Because Toby’s death was not caused by Logan’s silence.

It was caused by people who wanted the silence.

Then Daniel revealed the final piece.

“We found Emily.”

Logan froze.

“What?”

“She’s alive.”

For seven years, Logan imagined every possible ending.

None of them prepared him for hope.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at him.

“She wants to see you.”

That night, Logan drove for hours.

Toward a place he had never heard of.

Toward a person he had mourned.

Toward answers he had spent years searching for.

When the door opened, time stopped.

Emily Miller stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Neither of them spoke.

Then Emily whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

And Logan realized something.

The person he spent seven years trying to find…

Had been waiting for him too.

But before they could talk, a car stopped outside.

Emily’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Logan…”

“What?”

May you like

She looked toward the window.

“They found us.”
