Chapter 13 - The Mother Who Was Never Believed

Toby’s mother lived in a small apartment above an abandoned bookstore.
The place looked like someone had left in a hurry.
Boxes everywhere.
Old photographs.
Documents stacked across the table.
A life built around running.
When Logan entered, she immediately started crying.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she recognized him.
“You’re the doctor.”
Logan nodded.
“Yes.”
Her hands trembled.
“You were the one who tried to help him.”
The words hurt.
Because Logan still wondered if he tried hard enough.
“My name is Laura Carter.”
Logan froze.
Carter.
Not Adrian.
A different Carter.
“You’re related?”
She nodded.
“His sister.”
The room went silent.
Logan looked around.
“Why didn’t you come forward?”
Laura laughed sadly.
“Who would believe me?”
She explained.
After Toby’s death, she tried to expose Adrian.
She found evidence that he manipulated the investigation.
She found records that were changed.
Witnesses who suddenly changed their stories.
Doctors pressured into silence.
“But every time I spoke…”
A pause.
“Someone made me look unstable.”
Logan understood.
That was Adrian’s greatest weapon.
Not violence.
Not threats.
Discrediting people.
Making the truth sound impossible.
Laura handed him a folder.
Inside was Toby’s original medical record.
The real one.
Logan read carefully.
And then he saw it.
A note hidden in the file.
Written by Toby.
A child’s handwriting.
Dr. Logan believed me.
Logan stopped.
Because Toby remembered.
The boy he thought he failed…
Remembered that he was the one person who listened.
Laura watched him.
“He trusted you.”
Logan looked away.
“I should have done more.”
“No.”
Her voice was firm.
“You were the only one who tried.”
That sentence stayed with him.
Because for ten years, Logan punished himself for something he did not cause.
Laura revealed one more secret.
Before Toby died, he gave her something.
A small recording.
She had hidden it because she was afraid.
They played it.
Static.
A child’s voice.
Toby.
“If something happens…”
A pause.
“Dr. Carter is not helping.”
Logan closed his eyes.
Because Toby knew.
A child knew.
And adults ignored him.
The recording continued.
“There are other kids.”
A small breath.
“He says he is helping them.”
A pause.
“But they cry.”
Everyone in the room was silent.
Marcus immediately copied the file.
“This changes everything.”
Emily nodded.
“It proves intent.”
For the first time, they had something Adrian could not explain away.
A victim’s voice.
A child’s truth.
But when they returned to the safe location, they discovered something impossible.
Maya was gone.
The security cameras showed only one thing.
A person entering the building.
A person nobody expected.
Logan watched the footage.
His face changed.
“No…”
Emily stepped closer.
“Who is it?”
The person on the screen turned toward the camera.
Dr. Michael Miller.
Logan’s father.
The man everyone believed was dead.
And beneath the video was one message:
You wanted the truth. Come find me.
Logan stared at the screen.
Because the biggest secret was no longer about Adrian Carter.
May you like
It was about the man who started everything.
His own father.
