Chapter 3 - The Basement Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The words followed Logan everywhere.

He failed one child. Make sure he saves this one.

He hated that whoever wrote them was right.

Because Toby’s death was the wound he never closed.

And now someone had placed another child directly in front of it.

The investigation into Veronica Hale expanded quickly.

The police discovered she had used multiple identities.

Different states.

Different addresses.

Different stories.

But the pattern remained.

Children disappeared from unstable situations.

Children without strong support systems.

Children who could easily be overlooked.

Maya was not the first.

She was just the first one who escaped.

Logan sat across from Detective Marcus Reed.

“The basement.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

“Maya wrote it.”

He opened the case file.

“She was trying to tell us something.”

They searched Veronica’s last known residence that evening.

A quiet suburban house.

Perfect lawn.

Perfect curtains.

The kind of house nobody suspected.

The neighbors described Veronica as polite.

Helpful.

Friendly.

One neighbor even said:

“She was wonderful with Maya.”

Logan heard those words and felt a familiar anger.

Because dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.

Inside the house, everything appeared normal.

Too normal.

Family photographs.

Clean rooms.

Organized shelves.

A life carefully designed to look safe.

Then Marcus found the door.

Hidden behind a storage cabinet.

Locked.

No key.

No obvious handle.

Logan stared at it.

“This is it.”

The police forced it open.

And behind it was a staircase.

Descending into darkness.

The basement was not a basement.

It was an archive.

Files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Children’s names.

Dates.

Locations.

Logan felt sick.

Because every folder represented a child.

Every photograph represented a life.

Then he found Maya’s file.

But it wasn’t the newest.

It was old.

Years old.

Before she was eight.

Before she became Maya Vance.

The first page contained a photograph.

A baby.

A small girl.

And beside it:

Subject: Maya Miller

Logan froze.

Because the date was impossible.

The child in the photograph was connected to him.

The next document explained everything.

Maya was not randomly chosen.

She was hidden.

Protected.

Moved between identities.

Because someone had been trying to keep her away from Veronica.

Then Logan saw the name of the person who created the protection plan.

His hands went cold.

Dr. Emily Miller.

His sister.

A woman who had been missing for seven years.

Marcus looked at him.

“Logan?”

He couldn’t answer.

Because the impossible truth was staring back at him.

Maya was not just connected to Toby.

She was connected to his own family.

And somewhere inside that basement...

May you like

Was the truth about why his sister disappeared.

And why Maya had been brought to him.
