The photograph showed two locations.
Two children.

And one impossible decision.
Logan stared at the screen.
His first instinct was immediate.

Save them.
Protect them.
That was who he was.

But Adrian Carter knew that.

“You’re quiet.”
Emily’s voice pulled him back.
Logan looked at her.
“He wants me to choose.”
She understood immediately.
“Of course he does.”

“This was never about the children.”
Logan looked at the photograph again.
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“It was about proving something.”
Adrian believed people were predictable.
He believed fear controlled decisions.

Emily shook her head.

“He wants emotion to replace judgment.”
Logan looked at the photograph.
Then at Maya.
The little girl who had already lost everything.
The child who trusted him because someone told her he would come.
He remembered Toby.
The mistake that haunted him.

Marcus began tracing the images.

“A private medical facility.”
Logan froze.
“Adrian’s facility?”
Marcus nodded.

Adrian didn’t just want him to save children.
He wanted him to enter his world.

“We split up.”
Emily immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Logan looked at her.
“You know the system better than anyone.”
“And you know Adrian.”
A pause.
“He wants you alone.”
Logan smiled slightly.
“Then he’s going to be disappointed.”
They built the team quickly.
Marcus and local authorities moved toward the community center.
Logan, Emily, and a specialized rescue team moved toward Adrian’s private facility.
Before leaving, Maya grabbed Logan’s hand.
He stopped.
She rarely touched anyone.
“Maya?”
She looked up.
“Don’t disappear.”
The words were simple.
But they carried everything.
Every person who had left her.
Every promise broken.
Every door closed.
Logan knelt beside her.
“I won’t.”
“You promise?”
He remembered what he told her before.
Promises meant little.
Actions mattered.
So he answered differently.
“I’ll come back.”

The abandoned medical facility looked empty.

“Welcome, Logan.”
Logan stared at the screen.
“Where are the children?”
Adrian smiled.
“Still focused on rescue.”

“You never changed.”
“You used children to prove a theory.”
Adrian tilted his head.
“No.”
“I used situations.”
“You created suffering.”
A small smile.
“And you created heroes.”
Logan felt anger rise.
But he controlled it.
Because that was what Adrian wanted.
“You think you understand people.”
Adrian smiled.
“I do.”
“No.”
Logan stepped closer.
“You understand reactions.”
A pause.
“But not choices.”
For the first time, Adrian looked slightly uncomfortable.

Maya.

Alone.
Logan’s heart stopped.
“Maya.”
The girl looked at the camera.
She was scared.
But she did not cry.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“She was always the most interesting one.”
Logan’s voice became cold.
“She’s a child.”
“She’s proof.”
“Of what?”
“That trauma creates behavior.”
Logan looked at Maya.
Then at Adrian.
“You’re wrong.”
Adrian smiled.
“Convince me.”
The screen changed.
Another camera.
The second child.
Then another.
Adrian had more than two.
Logan realized the truth.
The photographs were not the test.
They were bait.
“There were never only two children.”
Adrian smiled.
“Exactly.”
He wanted Logan overwhelmed.
He wanted him to believe saving everyone was impossible.
He wanted him to feel the same helplessness he had felt with Toby.
But Logan was no longer that man.
He turned to Marcus through the communication line.
“Forget the locations.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Logan continued.
“Find the network.”
Emily understood first.
“He wants you to chase individual victims.”
Logan nodded.
“We stop the machine.”
For the first time, Adrian’s expression changed.
Because Logan had refused the game.
“You’re not supposed to do that.”
Logan looked at the screen.
“Why?”
“Because people always choose themselves.”
A pause.
“You’re supposed to prove me right.”
Logan answered calmly.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m here to prove you wrong.”
The investigation team located the central system.
Every hidden facility.
Every file.
Every child.
Every person involved.
Adrian’s empire was exposed in minutes.
But before the system shut down, one final message appeared.
From Adrian.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Almost curious.
You still don’t understand.
Logan stared.
A second message appeared.
I didn’t create this system.

I inherited it.
