The words chilled him.
“What choice?”
“She could expose everything…”
A pause.
“Or protect Maya.”
Logan closed his eyes.

Emily did not disappear because she failed.

“Where is she?”
Adrian laughed softly.
“You still think this is about finding people.”
A pause.
“This is about understanding why they disappear.”
The call ended.
That evening, Maya asked about Emily.
Logan sat beside her.
“You knew my sister?”
The little girl looked down.
“She was kind.”

“When?”
“When I was little.”
“How little?”
Maya looked at him.
“Before Veronica.”
The answer changed everything.
Emily had not found Maya recently.

“Maya.”
The girl hesitated.
“What?”
“Did Emily tell you anything about me?”
A long silence.
Then Maya reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small folded paper.
Old.
Carefully preserved.
Logan opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
In Emily’s handwriting.
When he sees her, he will finally forgive himself.
