Chapter 7 - THE MARRIAGE WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

Adrian met Vanessa at a charity auction.
At least, that was the story he had believed.
She had accidentally spilled champagne near his table.
Laughed.
Apologized.
They talked.
She said she had no idea who he was.
Adrian had loved that.
After losing his first wife, Caroline, he distrusted people attracted to wealth.
Vanessa seemed different.
Now Diane placed a report before him.
Four weeks before the charity auction, Vanessa attended a private dinner sponsored by a VantaCore foundation.
Grant Mercer was present.
Two weeks later, Vanessa searched Adrian online nineteen times.
Then purchased a ticket to the fundraiser.
There had been no accidental meeting.
Adrian felt something hollow open inside him.
Emma had returned only because the old laptop now formed part of the investigation.
She watched his face.
“You okay?”
“No.”
It was the first honest answer he gave.
He called Vanessa.
She answered.
“You finally miss me?”
“Did Grant send you to that fundraiser?”
Silence.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Vanessa.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“Then tell me what it was like.”
“He knew I wanted to meet you.”
“Why?”
Another silence.
“Money?”
“No.”
“Access?”
“At first.”
Adrian felt cold.
“At first?”
“I didn’t expect to love you.”
He laughed once.
A broken sound.
Emma looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“Grant told me you were impossible to approach through business.”
“So he approached me through marriage?”
“He introduced the idea.”
“And you agreed.”
“I was desperate.”
“For what?”
“My family was bankrupt.”
Adrian knew they had financial problems.
Not how bad.
Vanessa’s father had left hidden debt.
Properties were mortgaged.
Her brother owed millions.
Grant offered help.
He wanted introductions.
Information.
Nothing major.
At first.
Then he learned about Orion.
And Vanessa had already built a life inside Adrian’s house.
“Why frame Emma?”
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“Because she saw the key.”
“So you destroyed her.”
“I panicked.”
“You planned the Rolex.”
“Yes.”
“You gave Natalie the second drive.”
“Yes.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Did you ever love Lily?”
Vanessa did not answer immediately.
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“Yes!”
“Then why make her lose the person she trusted most?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Because Lily never loved me the way she loved Emma.”
There it was.
Jealousy.
Not romantic.
Something uglier.
A child’s affection treated like property.
Adrian ended the call.
Emma stood near the window.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked at her.
“For?”
“That your marriage started like that.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You’re comforting me after my wife framed you.”
“I’m not comforting you.”
Emma looked at him.
“I’m acknowledging it hurts.”
The distinction mattered.
Diane entered.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“Grant just requested an emergency board meeting.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
“Purpose?”
She handed him the notice.
Review of executive security failures and leadership fitness.
Grant’s plan was accelerating.
Steal Orion.
Frame Emma.
Expose the breach.
Blame Adrian.
Remove him.
Then buy what remained.
Adrian stared at the notice.
Grant had spent years building this.
But Grant still believed Vanessa was useful.
He did not know she had confessed.
Adrian looked at Diane.
“Don’t announce anything.”
She understood immediately.
“You want Grant comfortable.”
“Very.”
He looked toward the mansion cameras.
Vanessa had forgotten who she married.
May you like
Grant had forgotten something too.
Adrian did not build a cybersecurity empire by revealing what he knew too early.
