Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA NEVER BLINKED

The room went silent before Adrian Cole said a single word.
Emma Hayes was still on the marble floor.
Her right palm stung where she had tried to catch herself.
A strand of brown hair had fallen across her face, and one knee of her black uniform had torn against the edge of the coffee table.
Across from her, Vanessa Cole stood with her shoulders squared and her chin lifted.
Only seconds earlier, she had shoved Emma hard enough to send her backward.
Now she looked almost pleased.
“There,” Vanessa said.
Her voice carried through the enormous Beverly Hills living room.
“Check her pockets.”
Nobody moved.
Two housekeepers stood beside the dining-room arch.
The chef had stopped halfway through the hallway.
Marcus Vale, Adrian’s head of security, watched from near the front doors.
And Adrian himself stood beside the fireplace holding his phone.
Vanessa looked at him.
“What are you waiting for?”
Adrian’s expression revealed nothing.
“My father’s Rolex disappeared from the library.”
“I know.”
Vanessa pointed at Emma.
“And she was the last person in there.”
Emma pushed herself upright.
“I didn’t take it.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You expect anyone to believe you?”
Emma’s face burned.
She had been working for Adrian for almost a year.
She cared for his seven-year-old daughter, Lily.
She prepared school lunches.
Stayed beside Lily during nightmares.
Read the same dinosaur book six nights in a row because Lily refused to sleep without it.
She had never taken so much as a bottle of water from the house without asking.
But Vanessa had already searched her bag.
Already accused her in front of the staff.
Already ordered Marcus to call police.
And when Emma tried to leave the room, Vanessa shoved her.
“You don’t understand,” Emma whispered.
“That watch means nothing to me.”
Vanessa’s smile widened.
“Of course it does.”
“It’s worth more than you’ll make in ten years.”
Something changed in Adrian’s face.
Not because Vanessa insulted Emma.
Because she knew exactly how much the watch was worth.
Adrian looked down at his phone.
“A hundred and twelve thousand dollars at the last insurance valuation.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Exactly.”
Adrian lifted his eyes.
“I never told you that.”
Her smile faltered.
“What?”
“The valuation.”
He tapped his phone.
The eighty-inch television mounted against the far wall went black.
Then security footage appeared.
Vanessa stared.
Emma stopped breathing.
The timestamp read:
10:42 A.M.
Emma entered the library carrying clean towels.
She crossed to the reading chair.
Placed the towels down.
Adjusted the curtains.
Then walked out.
Forty-one seconds.
She never approached the display cabinet.
Adrian moved the footage forward.
11:03 A.M.
Vanessa entered.
Alone.
She closed the door.
Looked toward the hallway.
Then walked directly to the display cabinet.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
On-screen, she unlocked the cabinet.
Removed the gold Rolex.
Held it in her hand.
And slipped it inside her dress pocket.
Nobody in the real room moved.
The video changed again.
Upstairs hallway.
11:09.
Vanessa walked toward Emma’s bedroom.
She disappeared inside.
Thirty-two seconds later, she came out without the watch.
Adrian stopped the video.
Emma looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
The smugness was gone.
Adrian’s voice became terrifyingly quiet.
“You planted my father’s watch in her room.”
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“I was testing her.”
Marcus actually blinked.
Adrian stared.
“Testing her?”
“Yes.”
“I had concerns.”
“So you committed theft to see whether my nanny would steal?”
“It wasn’t theft.”
“It belongs to me.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“I don’t think I do.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“She’s too close to Lily.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
There it was.
Not the Rolex.
Not money.
Lily.
Vanessa looked at Emma.
“She behaves as though she belongs here.”
Emma whispered:
“I never said that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Adrian glanced toward Marcus.
“Where is the watch?”
Marcus answered.
“Recovered from beneath Ms. Hayes’s mattress.”
Vanessa immediately said:
“See?”
Adrian looked at her.
“I just watched you enter her room with it.”
Vanessa went silent.
Emma’s eyes filled, but she refused to cry.
Adrian turned to her.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“I owe you an apology.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re apologizing to her?”
“Yes.”
“Adrian—”
He raised one hand.
She stopped.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Preserve every recording from the past sixty days.”
Vanessa went completely still.
“Why?”
Adrian glanced at her.
“Because people rarely invent a plan like this only once.”
For the first time all afternoon, Vanessa looked frightened.
And Emma noticed something else.
Vanessa’s right hand had moved toward the gold bracelet around her wrist.
Not nervously.
May you like
Protectively.
As if something far more dangerous than a stolen Rolex was hidden beneath it.
