Chapter 11 - ADRIAN’S REAL PUNISHMENT
The public expected Adrian to destroy Vanessa.
Tabloids predicted a hundred-million-dollar divorce.
Commentators speculated he would sue her into poverty.
Social media demanded prison.
Emma refused to read any of it.
Adrian did something quieter.
He filed for annulment.
He provided investigators with everything.
No edited footage.
No selective evidence.
No private revenge.
When Vanessa’s attorney called asking whether Adrian would make a public statement condemning her, he said no.
When asked whether he would defend her, he also said no.
Diane asked:
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“People may interpret silence.”
“They always do.”
“What do you want?”
Adrian looked toward the library.
“My daughter safe.”
“My company repaired.”
“Emma cleared.”
“Matthew cleared.”
“And Vanessa?”
He thought.
“The truth.”
Vanessa eventually accepted responsibility.
Her cooperation against Grant mattered.
So did her confession regarding Emma.
She pleaded to offenses connected to unauthorized access, evidence planting, and conspiracy.
Because she had no previous criminal history and assisted extensively, the sentence did not resemble the fantasy punishment demanded online.
Probation.
Home confinement.
Financial penalties.
Community service.
Restrictions on accessing protected corporate systems.
Emma heard the result from Diane.
“Are you disappointed?”
Diane asked.
“No.”
“Most people expected more.”
Emma looked at her.
“She lost her marriage.”
“Her reputation.”
“Most of her friends.”
“Her home.”
“She has to rebuild a life knowing she did this.”
Emma shrugged.
“I don’t need to watch her suffer.”
That evening, Vanessa requested permission to send Emma a letter.
Emma agreed.
It said:
I chose you because I believed class would protect me. I believed Adrian would trust his wife before a nanny, no matter what the evidence showed. I used your job, your income, and your position in the house against you. I am ashamed of that more than I can explain.
Emma stopped.
Then continued.
I was afraid Grant would destroy me. Instead of facing him, I tried to destroy someone I believed had less power than I did.
At the bottom:
I am sorry. Not because I was caught. Because I finally understand what I did.
Emma folded the letter.
She did not forgive Vanessa that day.
