Chapter 12 - MATTHEW’S NAME

Cole Systems issued the correction publicly.
Not hidden on a corporate website.
Not buried in legal language.
Adrian stood before employees.
Behind him was Matthew Ryan’s photograph.
“Six years ago, this company allowed evidence to move faster than truth.”
He paused.
“Matthew Ryan was accused of stealing proprietary research.”
“He did not.”
Employees went completely silent.
“His credentials were compromised.”
“His reputation was damaged.”
“And although the conspiracy originated outside this company, our failure to investigate thoroughly happened inside it.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I approved decisions that allowed Matthew to leave under suspicion.”
“That was my failure.”
Emma stood at the back.
Her eyes filled.
Adrian did not say:
I was grieving.
The board pressured me.
The evidence looked convincing.
He simply said:
“I was wrong.”
Cole Systems restored Matthew’s professional record.
Paid compensation owed to his estate.
Established independent review procedures for employee misconduct accusations.
Created an appeal process outside direct executive control.
And established the Matthew Ryan Fellowship for digital ethics.
Afterward, Adrian found Emma alone.
“Was that enough?”
“No.”
He nodded.
She smiled slightly.
“But it was something.”
He smiled too.
“My mother would have liked it.”
“I’m sorry she didn’t see it.”
“So am I.”
Adrian hesitated.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“The estate compensation is significant.”
“I know.”
“It belongs legally to you and your brother.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have to work for me anymore.”
She laughed.
“I resigned weeks ago.”
“Right.”
“You’re struggling with that.”
“Apparently.”
Emma looked toward Lily, who was drawing at a table nearby.
“I’ll stay until things settle.”
“As nanny?”
“No.”
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“As Emma.”
He understood.

For the first time, their relationship no longer had a job description.
That frightened him more than expected.
