Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

Grant entered Cole Systems headquarters through the main doors.

He had been advised not to.

He came anyway.

Powerful men often confuse appearing fearless with being safe.

The board had summoned him to answer questions regarding his investment group’s communications with Owen.

Grant arrived with four attorneys.

Adrian arrived with Diane.

No Emma.

No Vanessa.

No theatrics.

Grant smiled.

“You look tired.”

Adrian replied:

“You look expensive.”

Grant laughed.

They sat.

Diane began with financial records.

Grant denied knowing Owen’s debts.

Then communications.

Grant claimed intermediaries acted independently.

Then Vanessa.

He called her “an unstable social climber attempting to save herself.”

Adrian felt anger.

Not because Vanessa deserved protection from consequences.

Because Grant believed every weaker person around him could be discarded once useful.

Matthew.

Howard.

Vanessa.

Owen.

Emma.

Different lives.

Same method.

Grant leaned back.

“Your problem, Adrian, is emotional judgment.”

“My problem?”

“You married the wrong woman.”

“You trusted the wrong employees.”

“You kept a sentimental nanny inside a secure residence.”

Adrian stared.

“Sentimental nanny?”

Grant smiled.

“She has become rather important to your public story.”

Diane’s eyes sharpened.

Grant had made a mistake.

He knew too much about Emma’s role.

Adrian allowed silence to stretch.

Grant continued.

“Her stepfather was unstable too.”

There.

Matthew.

Adrian leaned forward.

“How do you know anything about Matthew Ryan?”

Grant stopped.

The attorneys beside him changed expressions.

Grant recovered.

“Public records.”

“No.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“His connection to Emma was never public.”

Grant’s attorney interrupted.

“My client is ending this interview.”

Diane placed one final document on the table.

A copy of Matthew’s unsent email.

Grant read the first line.

Color left his face.

Adrian watched.

For years, Grant had believed Matthew died without leaving proof.

Now he knew.

“You destroyed his career,” Adrian said.

Grant stood.

“You allowed it.”

The words hit.

Adrian did not deny them.

“Yes.”

Grant seemed surprised.

“I did.”

Adrian continued.

“And I will live with that.”

He looked directly at Grant.

“But you will answer for what you did.”

Grant left.

Two days later, Howard Lyle surrendered.

Three days later, he signed a cooperation agreement.

Owen followed.

Natalie provided evidence.

Vanessa provided messages.

The structure around Grant collapsed.

Then federal investigators arrived at VantaCore headquarters.

Cameras recorded Grant walking out.

Not handcuffed.

Not yet.

But no longer smiling.

The headline that evening read:

VANTACORE CEO TARGET OF MAJOR TRADE-SECRET INVESTIGATION.

Emma read it once.

Then turned off her phone.

She had learned something during the previous weeks.

Watching someone fall could become another kind of prison.

She wanted her own life back.
