Chapter 8 - A BROTHER’S DEBT

Lucas denied signing the petition.

He stared at the copy as though it belonged to another family.

“That is not my signature.”

“It was filed using your personal legal account,” Detective Ortiz said.

“I do not have a legal account.”

“You do.”

She turned the laptop toward him.

The account had been created with his passport number, Social Security information, and electronic signature.

Each item had been provided to Calder Finance when Lucas borrowed money.

“They used my loan documents,” he said.

Adrian stood across the room.

“You made it possible.”

“I did not know.”

“You keep saying that.”

Lucas slammed his palm against the table.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I am telling you the truth.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“You are telling us only what the evidence has already exposed.”

Lucas looked away.

Elena sat near the window.

“Victoria said something to you when she offered to clear the debt.”

Lucas remained silent.

“She made you believe Adrian had taken something from you,” Elena continued.

His jaw tightened.

“What was it?”

“The company.”

Adrian laughed once without humor.

“You never wanted the company.”

“I wanted the choice.”

“You were given positions.”

“Positions under you.”

“You abandoned every responsibility.”

“Because no one expected me to succeed.”

“That is not true.”

“It was always Adrian.”

Lucas stood.

“Adrian was the serious one.”

“Adrian was the heir.”

“Adrian was the man Father trusted.”

He looked toward Elena.

“And then you arrived with another fortune hidden behind your name.”

His bitterness filled the room.

Victoria had recognized it.

She told Lucas that the merger would create a new leadership structure.

She promised him control of an entertainment division.

She suggested Adrian planned to remove him entirely after the baby was born.

Lucas believed enough of the story to help her.

But he still insisted he had not filed the petition.

“Can you prove where you were on the filing date?” Ortiz asked.

Lucas checked the date.

He had been in Monaco.

Victoria had been there too.

A photograph from a casino showed them together.

That same night, Lucas became intoxicated and signed what he thought was an extension to his loan.

He no longer remembered the details.

“They had me sign the petition,” he whispered.

“Or documents authorizing them to sign for you.”

Elena studied him.

“Will you testify?”

Fear crossed his face.

“If I do, Calder will destroy me.”

“Calder is already destroying you,” Adrian said.

“They know everything.”

“Then give us something they do not know you kept.”

Lucas said nothing.

Adrian walked toward the door.

“Take him out.”

“Wait.”

Lucas reached inside his jacket.

Marcus immediately raised his hand toward his weapon.

Lucas slowly removed a small black notebook.

“I kept records.”

Adrian turned.

“Of what?”

“Payments.”

“Why?”

“Because I did not trust Victoria.”

“You trusted her enough to betray us.”

“I trusted her promises.”

Lucas placed the notebook on the table.

Inside were dates, transfer numbers, names, and meeting locations.

One entry appeared repeatedly.

E.A.

Another appeared beside three large payments.

N.C.

Nathan Crowe.

The final pages listed judges, bank officers, contractors, and private investigators.

Edmund Ashford had built a network around Vale International.

The operation reached much farther than one merger.

He had bribed a city inspector to delay Vale construction projects.

He had paid a union consultant to create labor disputes.

He had financed lawsuits through hidden third parties.

He had weakened the company deliberately before offering to save it.

Lucas also recorded one unexplained payment of ten million dollars to a company named Halcyon Medical Transport.

The payment was scheduled for the week before Elena’s due date.

Marcus searched the company.

Halcyon operated private ambulances and medical aircraft.

One of its directors was Dr. Samuel Warren.

“They planned to move her,” Adrian said.

“Where?” Elena asked.

Lucas turned to the final page.

A handwritten code appeared beside the Halcyon payment.

BLUE HARBOR.

No one knew what it meant.

Sofia, still recovering, recognized the phrase.

She had heard Nathan use it during a phone call.

“He said Blue Harbor was outside the court’s reach.”

Ortiz began searching properties owned by Ashford subsidiaries.

Most were commercial buildings.

One was a private medical retreat on an island in the Caribbean.

The facility was called Blue Harbor Wellness Center.

It specialized in confidential psychiatric treatment.

Patients could be admitted through guardianship orders issued by foreign courts.

Elena felt the room tilt.

They had planned to remove her from the country.

A legal order would declare her incapable.

An Ashford-controlled ambulance would transport her to a private airport.

By the time Adrian learned where she had gone, Edmund could control the trust.

“We expose everything now,” Adrian said.

Ortiz shook her head.

“Lucas’s notebook is evidence, but defense attorneys will call it self-serving.”

“Then arrest Edmund.”

“We need proof connecting him directly.”

Lucas stared at his own handwriting.

“There is a recording.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What recording?”

“The night in Monaco.”

Lucas’s voice became unsteady.

“I recorded Victoria because she was threatening me.”

“Where is it?”

“In a safe-deposit box.”

“Which bank?”

Lucas swallowed.

May you like

“Ashford Private Bank.”

The one institution Edmund controlled completely.
