Chapter 16 - THE KIDNAPPING WITHOUT A VAN

The offshore accounts began emptying before the hearing ended.
Money moved through banks in six countries.
Federal authorities froze several transfers, but more than four hundred million dollars disappeared.
Edmund had triggered the movement before surrendering.
The four-digit code had been the final authorization.
Elena could not understand how he obtained it.
The original certificate had remained in a federal vault.
Only a handful of people had seen it.
Adrian.
Elena.
Judge Hart.
Two federal agents.
Claire.
Claire had disappeared with the letters shortly before Edmund surrendered.
Suspicion turned toward her immediately.
Then Elena received a call.
Claire sounded breathless.
“I did not give him the code.”
“Where are you?”
“You need to leave the estate.”
“Why?”
“The certificate you found was not the original.”
Elena looked toward Adrian.
“What are you saying?”
“Your mother created two.”
“One real.”
“One designed for Edmund to steal.”
The certificate in the vault contained a trap code.
When entered, it opened the accounts but also identified every receiving bank and device.
Edmund believed he was stealing the fortune.
In reality, he was creating a map of his entire financial network.
“Why did you not tell us?” Elena asked.
“Because the trap only worked if he believed no one understood it.”
“Where are you?”
Claire’s voice lowered.
“Inside St. Catherine’s Clinic.”
The call ended.
Police surrounded the clinic again.
It appeared empty.
In the basement, agents found a hidden records facility connected to underground parking.
Claire was inside a locked treatment room.
She had entered voluntarily after receiving proof that Edmund’s doctors kept original records concerning Eleanor Marlowe’s death.
The records confirmed that Eleanor had been denied a life-saving medication.
Dr. Warren had altered treatment notes under Edmund’s orders.
Claire found the files.
Then the clinic locked around her.
Edmund had expected her investigation.
A timed security system sealed the basement and released anesthetic gas.
Agents rescued Claire minutes before she lost consciousness.
The records were recovered.
Edmund’s incompetence defense began collapsing.
His medical evaluations were written by doctors paid through Ashford companies.
His recent financial instructions demonstrated careful planning.
The offshore transfers proved he could coordinate complex acts.
But Edmund still had one final strategy.
He petitioned the court for guardianship over Victoria.
He claimed his daughter had suffered emotional abuse, coercion, and dependency throughout her life.
If Victoria were declared incompetent, her testimony and signatures could be challenged.
Victoria’s attorneys encouraged the petition.
It offered her a path away from responsibility.
Elena requested permission to speak with her.
Victoria initially refused.
Then she agreed.
They met through glass at the detention center.
Victoria looked different without the gold dress, jewelry, and carefully arranged hair.
She looked smaller.
Not kinder.
Simply less protected.
“You came to enjoy this?” she asked.
“No.”
“To ask me to betray my father?”
“To ask whether you plan to remain his weapon.”
Victoria laughed.
“You think he controlled me.”
“He used your companies for kidnapping.”
“I knew how those companies operated.”
“Then you are responsible.”
Victoria looked away.
Elena continued.
“He wants the court to believe you cannot make decisions.”
“He is protecting me.”
“He is erasing you.”
That struck something.
Victoria faced her again.
“My father built everything for me.”
“No.”
“He built everything through you.”
Elena placed copies of the payroll authorizations against the glass.
“Your signature.”
A clinic payment.
“Your signature.”
The camera shutdown.
“Your signature.”
The false medical affidavit.
“Your signature.”
“When he escapes responsibility, these remain yours.”
Victoria’s face drained.
“He said the attorneys would handle it.”
“He will become a confused old man.”
“You will become the woman who attacked a pregnant mother, helped falsify a child’s death, financed a kidnapping, and tried to seize a company.”
“You want me to testify.”
“I want you to decide whether your father owns your voice.”
Victoria stared at Elena for a long time.
Then she whispered, “He knew you were his last obstacle before the child was born.”
“Why?”
“The trust becomes permanent after the birth.”
“We know.”
“No.”
Victoria leaned closer to the glass.
“You do not understand.”
“Explain.”
“The child does not only inherit the preferred share.”
“What else?”
“My father called it the Marlowe claim.”
Victoria’s hands began to tremble.
“Your baby will legally inherit ownership rights to half of Ashford Capital.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Her mother had not only protected stolen money.
She had documented that the earliest Ashford companies were funded through assets belonging to the Marlowe family.
Once Elena’s child was born, the claim could pass to a new generation beyond Edmund’s ability to challenge Eleanor’s estate.
“That is why he wanted the baby declared dead,” Victoria said.
“And if that failed?”
Victoria looked toward the guard behind Elena.
“He said no child had to die.”
Elena felt cold.
“He only needed the child to be born to someone else.”
The clinic plan had included forged birth records.
Edmund intended to take Elena’s baby and legally place the child under an Ashford-controlled guardianship.

The kidnapping had never required a van.
It required doctors, documents, and a locked hospital door.
