Chapter 12 - THE BETRAYAL AT THE BOARD

The false death certificate was so outrageous that Adrian expected it to be reversed immediately.

It was not.

The county system showed a fetal-loss report submitted by Dr. Samuel Warren and electronically confirmed through St. Catherine’s Clinic.

The trust’s automated administration platform detected the filing and transferred temporary control of the preferred share to the backup fiduciary.

Ashford Capital called an emergency shareholder meeting before the court could intervene.

Nathan Crowe returned publicly for the first time in three days.

He entered Vale International headquarters surrounded by attorneys and private security.

News cameras captured him smiling.

He announced that Ashford Capital now possessed lawful authority to protect Vale assets from “reckless family conflict.”

Adrian watched the broadcast from the estate.

“He thinks the paperwork makes it true.”

“For several hours, it may,” Elena said.

She stood in front of the mirror fastening a dark blue dress over her visibly pregnant belly.

The image itself disproved the report.

But corporate systems did not respond to obvious truth.

They responded to filed documents.

Judge Hart scheduled an emergency hearing for noon.

Nathan scheduled the shareholder vote for eleven.

By the time the court corrected the record, Ashford intended to replace Adrian, approve the merger, and transfer major assets.

Margaret Chen advised Adrian not to enter headquarters.

Nathan’s security could claim he was trespassing once removed from office.

Adrian went anyway.

Elena went with him.

Hundreds of employees gathered in the lobby.

Some applauded.

Others watched nervously.

Their jobs, pensions, and projects depended on whichever side survived.

Nathan waited inside the boardroom.

Victoria sat beside him.

She had not been arrested because her attorneys negotiated voluntary surrender for the following week.

She wore another gold dress.

The choice was deliberate.

She wanted the world to see that the attack had not diminished her.

Her eyes moved to Elena’s stomach.

For one instant, surprise crossed her face.

“You look well,” Victoria said.

“You look disappointed,” Elena replied.

Nathan called the meeting to order.

Ashford’s attorney presented the preferred share and the false death record.

Adrian’s attorneys objected.

Nathan ignored them.

The vote to remove Adrian began.

Margaret voted against.

Three independent directors joined her.

Five voted in favor.

The final vote belonged to Lucas.

He held a small block of family shares inherited from their father.

No one had seen him since the fire.

Then the boardroom doors opened.

Lucas entered alone.

Nathan smiled.

“You are late.”

“I was deciding how much my brother deserved to lose.”

Adrian watched him carefully.

Lucas took his seat.

Victoria leaned toward him.

“Remember our agreement.”

“I remember every agreement.”

The secretary called his name.

Lucas looked at Adrian.

For years, resentment had lived between them.

Adrian had protected him without respecting him.

Lucas had demanded trust without earning it.

Now one vote contained every failure.

“I vote to remove Adrian Vale as chief executive,” Lucas said.

Elena closed her eyes.

The motion passed.

Nathan stood.

“Effective immediately, Mr. Vale is relieved of authority.”

Private guards moved toward Adrian.

Lucas remained seated.

Then he added, “And I request that my full statement be entered into the record.”

Nathan frowned.

“What statement?”

Lucas opened his jacket.

A small recording device was clipped inside.

“Our agreement, Victoria.”

Her face changed.

Lucas placed his phone on the table.

The screen showed a live broadcast.

Thousands of viewers were watching.

“I vote to remove Adrian,” Lucas repeated, “because the motion is based on fraudulent documents, bribery, extortion, and attempted kidnapping.”

Nathan lunged toward the phone.

Federal agents entered through both doors.

Lucas had spent the previous night meeting with investigators.

His vote completed the conspiracy’s overt act on camera.

Victoria’s reminder about their agreement confirmed coordination.

Nathan’s presentation of the false death record connected him to the fraud.

Agents arrested the clinic administrator, the fiduciary director, and two Ashford attorneys simultaneously.

Nathan backed away from the table.

“You cannot prove I created the document.”

Sofia stepped into the boardroom.

“You dictated it.”

She carried a recovered audio file.

While imprisoned, she had stolen a phone from one of Edmund’s men.

The device contained a voice message from Nathan instructing Dr. Warren’s assistant to file the fetal-loss report.

Nathan stopped speaking.

Victoria looked toward the windows.

Her father had promised complete control.

Instead, the room was collapsing.

Federal agents approached her.

Her attorney stood.

“She has a voluntary surrender agreement.”

“That agreement covered assault,” Ortiz said.

“Not financial conspiracy or kidnapping.”

Victoria turned toward Elena.

“You did this.”

Elena looked at the woman who had held scissors near her unborn child.

“No.”

“You did.”

“You mistook cruelty for power.”

Victoria’s composure broke.

“My family built this city.”

“With stolen money.”

“You know nothing about what my father sacrificed.”

“Then perhaps he can explain it in court.”

At that moment, the lights flickered.

A shot shattered the boardroom window.

Everyone dropped.

Security pulled Elena beneath the table.

The bullet had not been aimed at her.

It struck Nathan Crowe in the shoulder.

As blood spread across his shirt, he stared toward the rooftop across the street.

Edmund Ashford was eliminating witnesses.

And Nathan finally understood that loyalty had never protected him.
