Chapter 17 - A HOUSE FULL OF WITNESSES

Elena’s due date was still five weeks away.

Dr. Mercer warned that stress could trigger early labor.

The estate became a fortress.

No doctor entered without verification.

No electronic medical order was trusted without a direct conversation.

A secure delivery suite was prepared at Memorial Women’s Center.

Federal agents monitored every employee.

Edmund remained in custody.

Victoria agreed to cooperate.

Nathan remained protected.

The visible threats appeared contained.

Then Judge Hart disappeared.

Her car was found near the river.

Inside were her phone, purse, and a bloodstained scarf.

The judge had been preparing the final order confirming Elena’s trust rights.

Without her, the hearing would be delayed.

Another judge assigned to the case had once appeared in Edmund’s first ledger.

The network was still moving.

Claire studied the letters she had recovered.

One name appeared beside repeated payments.

Judge Malcolm Rusk.

The new judge.

Elena’s attorneys requested his removal.

He refused.

He scheduled an immediate hearing to reconsider Edmund’s competency and the trust’s administration.

The hearing would occur privately due to medical evidence.

No press.

Limited witnesses.

Adrian recognized the pattern.

A closed room.

Controlled documents.

A decision made before the victim could be heard.

Elena refused to enter another hidden proceeding.

She invoked an old provision in the trust allowing disputes to be heard at the estate where the original deed was executed.

Judge Rusk reluctantly agreed.

The main ballroom had not yet been repaired, so the hearing took place inside the library.

Federal agents stood at every door.

Journalists waited beyond the gates.

Victims named in the ledger gathered outside holding photographs of lost relatives and stolen homes.

Edmund entered in a wheelchair.

He stared blankly ahead.

His attorneys described him as confused.

Then Victoria entered.

Her father’s eyes changed for half a second.

She saw it.

So did Elena.

Victoria testified for three hours.

She described how Edmund praised cruelty as discipline.

How he taught her that employees existed to absorb humiliation.

How he rewarded her when she forced weaker people to submit.

She admitted knowing Elena’s identity during the attack.

She admitted the scissors were intended to frighten her toward the staircase.

She said Nathan had promised the fall would be described as a pregnancy-related accident.

“You intended to cause a miscarriage?” the prosecutor asked.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I intended to create a crisis.”

“That was not the question.”

“Yes.”

The word passed through the room like a blade.

Adrian looked away from her.

Elena did not.

She needed to hear the truth without softening it.

Victoria also testified that Edmund planned the clinic admission, the false death report, and the attempted guardianship.

Edmund’s attorney accused her of blaming an ill father to save herself.

Victoria looked toward the wheelchair.

“My father is not confused.”

Edmund remained motionless.

“He is listening to every word.”

No reaction.

Victoria stood.

She walked toward him before guards could stop her.

Then she whispered a series of account numbers.

Edmund’s hand tightened around the wheelchair arm.

Victoria turned to the judge.

“Those were false numbers.”

The courtroom erupted.

Edmund had reacted because he understood.

Judge Rusk ordered a recess.

Before he could leave, federal agents entered with Judge Hart.

She was alive.

She had staged her own disappearance with investigators after discovering that someone in her staff was leaking sealed orders.

The blood on the scarf belonged to a police evidence sample.

The operation exposed Judge Rusk.

He had contacted an Ashford intermediary immediately after receiving the case.

His messages showed he intended to declare Edmund incompetent and transfer trust authority.

Agents arrested him inside the library.

Edmund stood from the wheelchair.

The performance ended.

“You think this changes anything?” he demanded.

His voice was strong.

Cameras hidden under the court authorization recorded him.

The witnesses outside heard through speakers.

The entire estate became a public courtroom.

Edmund pointed toward Elena.

“That child exists because I allowed your family to survive.”

“No,” Elena said.

“My child exists because you failed to destroy us.”

“You believe inheritance makes you powerful?”

“No.”

She looked toward Rosa, Sofia, Claire, Lucas, Adrian, and the victims beyond the windows.

“Witnesses make the truth powerful.”

Edmund reached inside his coat.

Agents raised their weapons.

He removed a small remote control.

Marcus shouted.

Edmund pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

During the hearing, security had blocked every radio frequency.

Edmund stared at the useless device.

Adrian stepped forward.

“What was it supposed to activate?”

Edmund smiled.

“You will discover that soon.”

A sudden pain cut through Elena’s abdomen.

She gripped the edge of the table.

Warm liquid spread down her legs.

Dr. Mercer moved toward her.

Her water had broken.

The baby was coming early.

As Adrian lifted her into his arms, the estate alarms began ringing.

Not from explosives.

From the nursery.

Someone had entered the room prepared for their child.

On the empty crib lay a birth certificate already completed.

The mother’s name was blank.

The father’s name read EDMUND ASHFORD.
