Chapter 1 - THE LADY ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

For several seconds after Adrian Vale spoke, no one inside the grand entrance hall moved.

Victoria Ashford stood beneath the chandelier with the silver scissors still trembling in her hand.

The blades were stained with a thin line of blood.

At her feet, Elena Vale remained curled protectively around her pregnant belly.

The plain gray uniform she had borrowed from the housekeeping department was torn across one shoulder.

A shallow cut ran along her forearm.

It was not deep.

But the sight of blood on his wife’s skin changed something in Adrian’s face.

“Put them down,” he repeated.

His voice was quiet.

That frightened Victoria more than shouting would have.

She dropped the scissors.

They struck the marble with a sharp metallic crack.

Two security officers entered from the west corridor.

Victoria turned toward them in disbelief.

“You cannot be serious,” she said.

Adrian removed his coat and knelt beside Elena.

He placed it around her shoulders before carefully helping her sit upright.

“Call Dr. Mercer,” he ordered.

“Have the car brought to the front.”

Victoria took one step forward.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

He did not look at her.

“I thought she was an employee.”

Elena raised her eyes.

The fear in them had not disappeared.

Neither had the humiliation.

“That is supposed to excuse what you did?” she asked.

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

“I was defending my authority.”

“You have no authority in this house,” Elena said.

The words were soft.

They still silenced the room.

Adrian looked toward security.

“Escort Ms. Ashford outside.”

Victoria stared at him.

“Our companies are hours away from signing the largest development agreement either family has ever negotiated.”

“Not anymore.”

“You will lose hundreds of millions of dollars.”

“Then I will lose it.”

Victoria’s confidence cracked.

“You would destroy the Vale-Ashford partnership over her?”

Adrian finally looked at her.

“Over my wife?”

He rose slowly.

“I would destroy every building I own before allowing someone like you to believe she could be harmed without consequence.”

The guards approached.

Victoria stepped back.

“This is emotional.”

“No,” Adrian said.

“This is final.”

As security led her toward the front doors, Victoria twisted around.

Her expression had changed.

The panic was gone.

Something colder had replaced it.

“You have no idea what you just ended,” she said.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“I ended a partnership.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“You ended your protection.”

The doors closed behind her.

Dr. Mercer arrived ten minutes later.

He examined Elena in a private sitting room while Adrian stood near the window with his hands clenched behind his back.

The baby’s heartbeat remained strong.

The cut required three stitches.

There was bruising along Elena’s hip where Victoria had forced her to the floor, but there were no immediate signs of internal injury.

“She needs rest and observation,” Dr. Mercer said.

“No unnecessary stress.”

Adrian almost laughed at the impossibility of the instruction.

When the doctor left, he sat beside Elena.

“Why were you wearing that uniform?”

Elena looked down at the gray fabric.

“Rosa became dizzy during the charity luncheon.”

Rosa Alvarez had supervised the estate’s household staff for twenty-two years.

She had helped raise Adrian after his mother died.

“She refused to leave because Victoria’s private dinner was being prepared,” Elena continued.

“I told her I would finish arranging the dining room while another maid drove her to the clinic.”

“You should have called me.”

“You were meeting with the bank.”

“I would have left.”

“I know.”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the scissors now sealed inside an evidence bag on the table.

“I did not think wearing a uniform would make me a target.”

Adrian reached for her hand.

“It should not have.”

“She told me I had ruined the table setting.”

“What happened?”

“I moved her name card.”

“Why?”

“Because she had placed herself at the head of the table.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“That seat belongs to you.”

“I told her that.”

Elena swallowed.

“She laughed.”

Victoria had ordered Elena to replace the card.

When Elena refused, Victoria grabbed her arm.

She accused her of being an insolent servant.

Then she took the scissors from a flower-arrangement tray and cut the embroidered Vale crest from the uniform.

The blade slipped across Elena’s skin.

When Elena pulled away, Victoria shoved her down.

“She said women like me only understood pain,” Elena whispered.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

He had known Victoria for eleven years.

He had seen her insult executives, crush competitors, and humiliate employees.

He had excused it as arrogance.

He had called it ambition.

Now the truth stood before him stripped of every polite business description.

Victoria enjoyed power most when the other person had none.

“I should have seen her clearly,” Adrian said.

Elena studied him.

“You saw what she allowed you to see.”

A knock sounded at the door.

Marcus Hale, the estate’s security director, entered with a tablet.

“Mr. Vale, we have a problem.”

Adrian stood.

“What problem?”

“The cameras in the entrance hall stopped recording eleven minutes before the incident.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the coat.

“Stopped?”

Marcus nodded.

“They resumed thirty seconds after Ms. Ashford was escorted outside.”

Adrian’s gaze moved toward the hallway.

“Who disabled them?”

“We are checking access records.”

“Victoria did not know Elena would be wearing a uniform.”

“That may be true,” Marcus said.

“But someone knew there would be no recording.”

Silence spread through the room.

Adrian looked at the bloodstained scissors.

Victoria had not simply lost control.

At least part of what happened had been prepared.

His phone vibrated.

A message from the chairman of Vale International appeared on the screen.

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING.

8:00 A.M.

ASHFORD CAPITAL HAS WITHDRAWN ALL FINANCING.

Beneath it was a second message from an unknown number.

The accident in your home was only the beginning.

Adrian showed the screen to Marcus.

Elena read the words over his shoulder.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

Next time, your wife will not be lucky enough to stand up.
