Chapter 9-The Heir Nobody Was Supposed To Find

For most of my life, I believed my greatest weakness was fear.
I was wrong.
My greatest weakness was ignorance.
Fear made you careful.
Fear made you watch the doors.
Fear made you listen for footsteps behind you.
But ignorance…
ignorance made you trust the wrong people.
It made you accept the first explanation someone gave you.
It made you build your entire life around a story that was never yours.
I stared at the message on the screen.
RETURN ELENA DE LUCA… OR WE REVEAL WHAT SHE REALLY IS.
The words burned into my mind.
Not because they threatened me.
Because they confirmed something I had been feeling since the night I met Dante.
Everyone knew something about me.
Everyone except me.
Nolan.
My aunt.
My sister.
My mother.
Even Dante.
They were all pieces of a puzzle.
And I was the missing piece trying to understand the picture.
“What does Belladonna mean?”
My voice sounded strange.
Almost detached.
Like I was asking about someone else.
Dante remained silent.
That worried me more than an answer would have.
“Dante.”
He looked at me.
“Tell me.”
He walked toward the window.
For the first time, I saw hesitation.
Not weakness.
Never weakness.
But caution.
Like he knew the next words would change everything.
“The Belladonna family existed before the Morettis.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Chicago's criminal world didn't begin with violence.”
He looked outside.
“It began with influence.”
A pause.
“Money. Politics. Information. Alliances.”
I listened carefully.
“The Belladonnas controlled all of it.”
“So my family was powerful.”
“No.”
Dante turned back.
“Your family was untouchable.”
The room became quiet.
“Then why did nobody know?”
“Because someone erased them.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Dante's jaw hardened.
“That is the question everyone has been trying to answer for twenty years.”
I looked at the file.
“The attack on my family.”
He nodded.
“Wasn't an attack.”
I froze.
“What?”
“It was an execution.”
The word felt heavier than any gunshot.
Dante continued.
“Someone didn't want your family defeated.”
A pause.
“They wanted your bloodline gone.”
I swallowed.
“But I'm alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
That was the question nobody had answered.
Why me?
Why was I spared?
Why did everyone spend fifteen years protecting, hiding, or hunting me?
Dante looked at me.
“Because someone wanted you to grow up.”
A chill moved through me.
“For what?”
His answer came quietly.
“To inherit.”
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Again.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw another piece of my life breaking apart.
Nolan's smile.
Victoria's final words.
My mother's face beside him.
Dante telling me I was something I never knew existed.
A powerful family.
An heir.
A target.
A weapon.
I hated that word.
Weapon.
Because my whole life, people had treated me like one.
Something valuable.
Something useful.
Something to control.
A knock came at my door.
I expected Isabella.
Instead…
Dante stood there.
I immediately sat up.
“Is something wrong?”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“Then why are you here?”
He looked uncomfortable.
It was almost strange seeing Dante Moretti, a man who could intimidate entire rooms, hesitate outside my bedroom.
“I wanted to check on you.”
I looked at him.
“That's not something people usually do in your world, is it?”
A small change appeared on his face.
Almost a smile.
“No.”
“Then why are you?”
He leaned against the doorway.
“Because nobody checked on me when I needed it.”
The honesty caught me off guard.
Dante wasn't trying to impress me.
He wasn't trying to look noble.
He was simply telling the truth.
And somehow that was more dangerous.
“You and I are more similar than I thought.”
He looked at me.
“How?”
“Everyone decided who we were before asking.”
Silence.
Because we both understood.
My name made people fear me.
His name made people fear him.
Neither of us had chosen it.
We were born into wars we never started.
Dante looked away.
“You should leave Chicago.”
The words shocked me.
“What?”
“If they know who you are, this city isn't safe.”
I stared at him.
“You're telling me to run?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
His eyes met mine.
“I'm telling you that if you stay…”
A pause.
“You won't be able to go back to the life you had.”
I looked around the room.
A life where I was controlled.
A life where I was afraid.
A life where the man I loved was secretly destroying me.
That life was already gone.
“I don't want my old life back.”
Dante was quiet.
“I want the truth.”
Something changed.
Not in his face.
Deeper.
Like those words mattered.
The next morning, we discovered the first betrayal.
It came from someone nobody expected.
One of Dante's most trusted men.
Marco.
He had worked beside Dante for twelve years.
He had saved his life twice.
He was family.
Which was exactly why it hurt.
The security footage showed him entering the archive room.
The same room where Dante kept information about my family.
“He accessed the Belladonna files.”
Dante's second-in-command, Luca, placed the tablet on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Dante stared at the footage.
“Impossible.”
Luca looked at him.
“Boss…”
“No.”
Dante's voice hardened.
“Marco wouldn't betray me.”
I watched him carefully.
Because I recognized that reaction.
The refusal to believe someone you trusted could hurt you.
I had done the same thing with Nolan.
“Dante.”
He looked at me.
“You can't ignore what you see.”
His expression changed.
Because he knew I was right.
The painful truth was always the hardest one to accept.
“Find him.”
Luca nodded.
Two hours later, they found Marco.
Not running.
Not hiding.
Waiting.
Inside an abandoned warehouse.
Dante went alone.
I followed.
He didn't stop me.
Maybe because he knew I needed answers too.
Maybe because he knew I wasn't the same woman who entered that ballroom.
Marco stood in the center of the warehouse.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
When he saw Dante, he smiled sadly.
“I knew you'd come.”
Dante's face was cold.
“Why?”
Marco looked at me.
And my blood froze.
Because his expression wasn't hatred.
It was guilt.
“You have no idea what she is.”
Dante stepped forward.
“Explain.”
Marco laughed softly.
“You still don't understand.”
He looked at me.
“Elena De Luca isn't the last survivor.”
A pause.
“She is the reason everyone else died.”
The warehouse went silent.
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Marco looked at Dante.
“Your father knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That the Belladonna heir survived.”
Dante's eyes darkened.
“And?”
Marco swallowed.
“He wasn't trying to kill her family.”
A pause.
“He was trying to protect the world from her.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
Marco looked at me.
“I know what they told you.”
His voice lowered.
“But your parents weren't innocent.”
The words cut deeper than any weapon.
“My parents?”
“They weren't victims.”
Silence.
“They were building something.”
“What?”
Marco looked terrified.
“The Belladonna Empire.”
A pause.
“And you…”
His eyes met mine.
“Were supposed to inherit it.”
I couldn't breathe.
Because suddenly I understood the terrifying truth.
Everyone thought they were protecting me.
Everyone thought they were controlling me.
Everyone thought they knew what I was.
But nobody knew the most important thing.
Neither did I.
Marco stepped closer.
“Your mother is not hiding from the enemy, Elena.”
A pause.
“She is hiding from you.”
Before anyone could react…
a gunshot echoed.
Marco fell.
Dante immediately pulled me behind him.
The shooter was gone.
But one thing remained.
A message written on the warehouse wall.
Blood-red letters.
THE HEIR HAS AWAKENED.
And underneath…
one final sentence.
NOW SHE MUST CHOOSE WHO DIES.
I stared at the words.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wondered if the people hunting me were afraid of what I might become.
Or if they were afraid because they already knew.
