Chapter 2-The Secret Nolan Tried To Bury

The first gunshot sounded like thunder inside the ballroom.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

Nobody understood what was happening.

The wealthy guests who had spent the entire evening pretending they lived in a world untouched by violence suddenly remembered the truth.

Power always came with enemies.

And enemies always found a way inside.

The crystal chandelier above us shook from the explosion of sound.

People screamed.

Champagne glasses shattered against the marble floor.

Men in expensive suits pushed women behind them, pretending to be heroes while fear betrayed their faces.

But I didn't move.

Not because I wasn't afraid.

I was.

Every part of me was screaming to run.

To hide.

To disappear.

That instinct had kept me alive for years.

But Dante Moretti stood in front of me.

And somehow, standing behind the most dangerous man in Chicago felt safer than standing beside the man who claimed to love me.

Dante's hand moved quickly.

Too quickly for me to understand.

One second he was empty-handed.

The next, he had a gun.

A black weapon held with the kind of calm confidence that told me he had done this before.

Many times.

His body blocked mine completely.

“Stay behind me.”

Three words.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Absolute.

I should have been terrified of him.

Everyone else was.

But all I felt was relief.

And that scared me more than the gunfire.

Because I realized something.

I trusted Dante Moretti.

A stranger.

A mafia boss.

A man whose reputation was built on fear.

I trusted him more than the man who had slept beside me for three years.

A bullet hit the marble column beside us.

Dante didn't even flinch.

His men appeared from every direction.

They had been invisible before.

Standing in corners.

Watching.

Waiting.

That was what powerful men did.

They never walked into a room alone.

They walked in with an army nobody noticed.

“Lock the exits.”

Dante's voice cut through the chaos.

“Find who brought them in.”

His men moved instantly.

No questions.

No hesitation.

They obeyed because they respected him.

Not because they feared punishment.

That was the difference between Dante and Nolan.

Nolan needed control.

Dante already had it.

Then I saw Nolan.

Across the ballroom.

Standing behind several guests.

Watching.

Not panicking.

Not running.

Watching.

My stomach dropped.

Because he wasn't surprised.

He wasn't confused.

He looked exactly like someone who knew this would happen.

“Nolan.”

I whispered his name.

Dante heard me.

His eyes followed mine.

And the moment he saw Nolan's expression…

something changed.

The air around him became colder.

“Nolan.”

This time, Dante said his name differently.

Like a verdict.

Nolan immediately stepped forward.

“You're making a mistake.”

Dante stared at him.

“A mistake?”

Nolan pointed toward the armed men.

“They came here for you. Not me.”

A strange silence fell.

Because he was right about one thing.

The attack was aimed at Dante.

But then Dante looked at me.

Then at Nolan.

And I knew he understood.

Nolan hadn't just brought danger into the room.

He had brought it to me.

“You knew.”

Dante's voice was dangerously calm.

Nolan smiled.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“You knew armed men were coming.”

“No.”

“You positioned yourself near the exit.”

Nolan's face tightened.

“You're accusing me?”

Dante walked forward.

Slowly.

Almost casually.

But every step made Nolan more nervous.

“You brought her here tonight knowing something could happen.”

Nolan laughed.

“You don't know anything about her.”

That sentence stopped Dante.

Not because it offended him.

Because it confirmed something.

Nolan knew more than he should.

Dante turned back toward me.

“Who is he?”

I froze.

Because that wasn't the question I expected.

I thought he would ask what Nolan did.

How long it had been happening.

Why I stayed.

Instead, he asked:

Who is he?

Not what.

Who.

And suddenly I understood.

Dante wasn't looking at Nolan like an abusive boyfriend.

He was looking at him like an enemy.

A dangerous one.

My lips parted.

“Nolan isn't who everyone thinks he is.”

Nolan's expression changed.

“Don't.”

A warning.

The old fear returned for half a second.

Then I remembered something.

I wasn't alone anymore.

So I continued.

“His family owns several companies.”

Dante remained silent.

“But that's not their real business.”

Nolan's jaw tightened.

“Stop talking.”

I looked directly at him.

For years, I had been afraid of his anger.

Afraid of his disappointment.

Afraid of what would happen if I exposed him.

But now?

I was tired.

“Telling the truth doesn't scare me anymore.”

His eyes darkened.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

Maybe he was right.

Maybe I didn't.

Maybe I was walking into a world more dangerous than the one I was trying to escape.

But at least this time…

I was choosing my own danger.

“Nolan's father wasn't just a businessman.”

I looked at Dante.

“He was connected to organized crime.”

The room seemed to disappear.

Dante's expression became unreadable.

“Which family?”

I hesitated.

Because saying the name would change everything.

Nolan smiled slightly.

He knew.

He knew exactly what was coming.

And then I said it.

“The Vescari family.”

For the first time that night…

Dante Moretti looked genuinely surprised.

Not afraid.

Not shocked.

Surprised.

Because everyone in Chicago knew that name.

The Vescari family wasn't just another criminal organization.

They were old enemies.

A family built on betrayal.

Violence.

And revenge.

Dante looked at Nolan.

“You lied about your identity.”

Nolan laughed.

“You think you're better?”

His smile turned cruel.

“You're protecting a woman who has been hiding something from you too.”

My heart stopped.

Dante looked at me.

And I knew.

The moment I had feared had arrived.

Nolan had decided he couldn't win by attacking my reputation.

So he was going after my secret.

Dante spoke quietly.

“What secret?”

I couldn't answer.

Because if I told him…

everything would change.

I had spent years running from my past.

From my family.

From the name I had buried.

The name that had caused people to fear me before they ever knew me.

Nolan stepped closer.

“Tell him.”

My hands began shaking.

“Tell Dante Moretti who you really are.”

Dante's eyes stayed on mine.

Waiting.

Not forcing.

Just waiting.

And somehow that made it harder.

Because Nolan demanded the truth to destroy me.

But Dante wanted the truth because he wanted to understand me.

I closed my eyes.

Then whispered the words I hadn't spoken in years.

“My real name isn't Elena Rossi.”

Silence.

“My name is Elena De Luca.”

Dante froze.

The color disappeared from Nolan's face.

And suddenly…

the most feared man in Chicago looked at me like he had just discovered the one secret powerful enough to destroy us all.

Because everyone knew the De Luca name.

Everyone knew what happened to that family.

Everyone knew they were supposed to be dead.

But I was standing there.

Alive.

And Dante Moretti realized something terrifying.

The woman he had just decided to protect…

was the last surviving daughter of his greatest enemy.
