Chapter 3-The Daughter Everyone Thought Was Dead

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Not because they didn't have anything to say.

Because everyone in that ballroom suddenly understood that the night had changed.

This was no longer about Nolan.

No longer about a frightened woman escaping an abusive relationship.

No longer about a powerful man protecting someone weaker.

This was something older.

Something darker.

A war that had existed long before I ever walked into Dante Moretti's life.

The name De Luca had weight.

People didn't say it loudly.

They whispered it.

Like speaking it too clearly might bring back ghosts that were never meant to return.

And I was one of those ghosts.

Dante stared at me.

I had seen him look at enemies before.

Cold.

Calculating.

Almost emotionless.

But this was different.

This wasn't anger.

It wasn't hatred.

It was confusion.

Because Dante Moretti knew every powerful family in Chicago.

He knew every alliance.

Every betrayal.

Every secret buried under years of blood and money.

And according to everything he knew…

the De Luca family had ended fifteen years ago.

“I thought there were no survivors.”

His voice was low.

Almost a whisper.

I looked away.

“That's what everyone was supposed to believe.”

Nolan laughed.

A bitter, satisfied sound.

“There it is.”

Everyone turned toward him.

The fear he had shown earlier was gone.

Because now he had found a weapon.

A secret.

A weakness.

“You have no idea who you're protecting, Dante.”

Dante didn't look at him.

“Be careful.”

Two words.

But Nolan immediately stopped smiling.

Because even Nolan understood something.

Dante wasn't threatening him.

He was warning him.

And somehow that was worse.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

The ballroom was still filled with armed men.

Still surrounded by danger.

But somehow the truth felt more terrifying than the bullets.

Because Nolan was right about one thing.

I had hidden who I was.

Not because I wanted to deceive anyone.

Because I had spent my entire life learning that names could get people killed.

My name had killed my family.

My name had taken away my childhood.

My name had turned me into a target before I even understood what enemies were.

Dante took one step closer.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

The question hurt.

Not because he was angry.

Because he sounded disappointed.

And somehow that was worse.

I looked at him.

“Because I didn't know you.”

A small silence.

“You were Dante Moretti.”

I swallowed.

“The man everyone fears.”

His eyes remained fixed on mine.

“And you thought I would hurt you?”

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

He already knew.

Something shifted in his expression.

Not anger.

Understanding.

Because Dante Moretti, more than anyone, knew what it meant to survive by hiding pieces of yourself.

Before he could say anything, one of his men rushed toward him.

“Boss.”

Dante turned.

The man leaned closer and whispered something.

I couldn't hear the words.

But I saw Dante's expression change.

“What?”

The man hesitated.

“There's evidence that the attack came from inside.”

The room went still again.

Dante's gaze slowly moved across everyone present.

Then stopped on Nolan.

Nolan immediately shook his head.

“You can't seriously think—”

“Not him.”

Dante interrupted.

Everyone froze.

Including Nolan.

Dante looked toward the balcony above us.

“Someone else.”

His men followed his gaze.

And then I saw it.

A figure standing in the shadows.

Watching.

Waiting.

A woman.

She wore a black dress.

Her face was partially hidden.

But I knew that posture.

That confidence.

That coldness.

My blood ran cold.

“No.”

The word escaped my lips.

Dante looked at me.

“You know her?”

I couldn't breathe.

Because there was only one person who should have been impossible to see.

One person who belonged to a life I had buried.

One person who knew the truth about what happened the night my family died.

The woman stepped into the light.

And suddenly the entire ballroom disappeared.

Because I wasn't seeing a stranger.

I was seeing my past.

“My God…”

Someone whispered.

Dante's men immediately raised their weapons.

The woman smiled.

Not nervously.

Not fearfully.

Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Elena.”

Hearing my name from her lips made my entire body freeze.

Nobody had called me that in years.

Not the way she did.

Not with that voice.

Like she owned my past.

Like she owned my pain.

Dante moved slightly in front of me.

Protecting me.

Again.

But this time, I grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

His eyes moved to mine.

“She isn't here to kill me.”

A pause.

“She wants something worse.”

The woman smiled.

“I see you've become brave.”

My hands tightened.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

She laughed softly.

“And you're supposed to be forgotten.”

Every person in that room was watching.

Waiting.

Dante's voice became colder.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

Then at me.

“My name is Isabella De Luca.”

A wave of shock moved through the room.

My sister.

The sister everyone believed died the night our family was destroyed.

The sister I had spent fifteen years mourning.

The sister who had disappeared without leaving a single trace.

She walked closer.

And then she said the sentence that shattered everything I believed.

“Elena, you still don't know the truth about what happened to our family.”

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What are you talking about?”

Isabella looked at Dante.

Then back at me.

“Your family wasn't betrayed by the Morettis.”

Silence.

Dante's expression changed.

Because that sentence challenged everything he knew.

Isabella took another step forward.

“The person who destroyed the De Luca family…”

She paused.

And smiled.

“Was the person standing beside you all along.”

My eyes slowly moved.

Toward Nolan.

Nobody breathed.

Nolan's face went completely white.

Because for the first time tonight…

he looked truly afraid.

And I realized something.

The man I thought I needed protection from…

May you like

was only the beginning.

The real nightmare had been hiding behind him.
