Chapter 16-The Secret Inside My Blood

For a long time, I believed secrets were things people kept because they were afraid.

I was wrong.

Some secrets were kept because people believed the truth belonged to them.

They believed they had the right to decide when you were ready.

When you were strong enough.

When you were allowed to know who you really were.

And that was the thing that hurt the most.

Not the lies.

The arrogance behind them.

Everyone around me had made choices about my life.

My father.

My mother.

My sister.

Nolan.

Even Dante.

They all looked at me like I was something fragile.

Something that needed protection.

Something that couldn't survive the truth.

But they were wrong.

Because I had survived everything they tried to hide from me.

I survived Nolan.

I survived losing my family.

I survived fifteen years of believing I was nobody.

And maybe that was the reason they were all afraid.

Because they didn't know what would happen when I finally stopped being afraid.

The Belladonna estate was silent after Nolan's revelation.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was waiting for my reaction.

Waiting to see if I would break.

I looked at Nolan.

The man who spent years pretending to love me.

The man who knew exactly how to manipulate my fears.

And for the first time…

I didn't see a monster.

I saw a man who was losing control.

“You knew.”

My voice was quiet.

Nolan looked at me.

“Elena…”

“You knew everything.”

His jaw tightened.

“I knew enough.”

I stepped closer.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my family.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what would happen if I remembered.”

Silence.

That was all I needed.

The truth was always hidden in the pauses.

“You weren't protecting me.”

Nolan looked away.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“By destroying me?”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Because once, I knew every expression on his face.

I knew when he lied.

I knew when he felt guilty.

I knew when he was afraid.

And Nolan was afraid now.

Not of Dante.

Not of death.

Of me.

Because he finally understood something.

The woman he controlled for years was gone.

My mother stepped forward.

“Elena.”

I didn't look at her.

“Tell me.”

Silence.

“Tell me what I am.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You are my daughter.”

“That isn't enough.”

The words hurt her.

Good.

I needed her to understand.

“I spent fifteen years believing I was abandoned.”

A pause.

“I spent fifteen years thinking nobody came back for me.”

My voice cracked.

“And everyone was alive.”

My mother looked down.

“I wanted to come back.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She took a breath.

“Because your father made me promise.”

I froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“What promise?”

Her voice became softer.

“That if anything happened…”

A pause.

“I would disappear with you.”

I stared at her.

“You left me.”

“No.”

Her eyes filled with pain.

“I watched you.”

The room became silent.

“What?”

“I watched you grow up.”

My chest tightened.

“Where?”

“From far away.”

The answer hurt more.

“You watched me?”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing?”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

She looked at Dante.

Then at Nolan.

Then finally at me.

“Because every person who tried to reach you was found.”

A chill moved through me.

“What?”

“The Order was watching.”

My mother stepped closer.

“They knew you survived.”

“Then why didn't they kill me?”

Her face changed.

Because the answer scared her.

“Because they needed you.”

“For what?”

She looked toward the old Belladonna crest on the wall.

“Because you are the final key.”

Dante finally spoke.

“Enough riddles.”

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was controlled.

But I knew him now.

I knew when he was angry.

“You keep saying key.”

He looked at my mother.

“Key to what?”

My mother hesitated.

“The Belladonna archive.”

Dante frowned.

“We already know about the archive.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know about the files.”

A pause.

“You don't know about the real archive.”

The room became quiet.

“What is the real archive?”

My mother looked at me.

“Your memories.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The Belladonna family created a system.”

She spoke slowly.

“A way to protect information that could never be stolen.”

My stomach tightened.

“And?”

“The final piece wasn't a document.”

“It wasn't a location.”

“It was a person.”

My heart sank.

“Me.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My memories?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

My mother looked away.

“Your father made sure the information would only return when you were ready.”

I felt cold.

“You erased my memories?”

“No.”

She shook her head quickly.

“We protected them.”

I stared at her.

“How?”

Silence.

Then:

“Your father used a method developed by Belladonna scientists.”

I looked at Dante.

Even he looked surprised.

“What method?”

My mother whispered:

“A memory seal.”

The room went silent.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted someone to tell me this was impossible.

That my life wasn't some secret war.

That I wasn't born into a world of hidden empires and assassins.

But every time I thought I reached the end of the truth…

another door opened.

Another secret waited.

Another person told me:

You don't know everything.

I touched my head.

“So all this time…”

My mother nodded.

“The memories are there.”

“Why don't I remember?”

“Because you weren't supposed to.”

I looked at her.

“Who decides that?”

Nobody answered.

And that silence told me everything.

Everyone.

Everyone had decided.

That night, Dante found me outside the estate.

I stood on the balcony looking over the empty fields.

The same place where my childhood ended.

He didn't speak immediately.

He just stood beside me.

Like always.

Beside.

Not in front.

Not above.

Beside.

“I hate them.”

My voice surprised me.

Dante looked at me.

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

A pause.

“Everyone who thought they knew what was best for me.”

He didn't argue.

“You're angry.”

“Yes.”

“You should be.”

I looked at him.

“You don't think I'm dangerous?”

“No.”

“You don't think there's something inside me that could destroy everything?”

His answer came immediately.

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked at the horizon.

“Because power doesn't create monsters.”

A pause.

“Choices do.”

I stared at him.

“And what if I choose wrong?”

Dante looked at me.

“Then you choose again.”

Simple.

But somehow…

it was the first time anyone had given me that freedom.

The next morning, we discovered something impossible.

The Belladonna archive had activated.

Not because someone opened it.

Because I entered the room.

A hidden door beneath the estate opened when I touched the old family symbol.

Everyone gathered.

Dante.

Isabella.

My mother.

Even Nolan.

Nobody spoke.

Inside was a chamber.

Ancient.

Protected.

Waiting.

At the center was a single object.

A black box.

With my name engraved on it.

ELENA BELLADONNA.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The first line destroyed me.

My daughter, if you are reading this, then I have failed you.

I continued.

I know you will hate me.

A tear fell before I could stop it.

You should.

The words blurred.

Because I made the greatest mistake of my life.

I turned the page.

And the final sentence made everyone freeze.

I did not hide the truth from you because you were weak.

I hid it because the person who will betray you first will be the person you trust the most.

Slowly…

everyone looked around the room.

Because suddenly the question wasn't who was our enemy.

The question was:

Who had my father been warning me about?

And then the lights went out.

A single voice came from the darkness.

A voice I recognized.

But never expected.

“Your father was right.”

My blood turned cold.

The voice continued.

“The person who betrayed Elena first…”

A pause.

“Was me.”

The lights came back on.

And standing at the entrance…

May you like

was Isabella.

Holding a gun.
