Chapter 11-The Brother Who Came Back From The Dead

There are moments when fear feels like panic.

Your heart races.

Your hands shake.

Your mind searches for an escape.

But there is another kind of fear.

A colder one.

The kind that arrives when someone you thought was gone forever suddenly returns.

That was the fear I saw on Dante's face.

Not because Adrian Moretti was dangerous.

Dante had faced dangerous men his entire life.

He had survived assassins.

Betrayals.

Wars.

He had walked through situations where most people wouldn't have survived five minutes.

But this was different.

This wasn't an enemy appearing at his door.

This was a ghost.

A ghost wearing his family's name.

“Your brother is alive.”

I repeated the words slowly.

Like saying them again would somehow make them less impossible.

Dante didn't answer.

He continued staring at the screen.

The message remained there.

A threat.

A declaration.

A reminder.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone had access to his security system.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.

Isabella stepped closer.

“Dante.”

He finally looked away.

“Everyone leaves.”

The room immediately moved.

His men understood.

No questions.

No hesitation.

Within seconds, only four people remained.

Me.

Dante.

Isabella.

And Luca.

His second-in-command.

I watched Dante carefully.

The powerful man everyone feared was still there.

But underneath it…

there was something else.

A son.

A brother.

A man who had lost his family once already.

“Tell me about him.”

Dante looked at me.

“What?”

“Adrian.”

Silence.

“You don't have to.”

“I do.”

I stepped closer.

“Because apparently everyone connected to our past is coming back.”

A pause.

“And I need to understand who wants me dead.”

Dante looked away.

Then finally spoke.

“Adrian was my brother.”

Simple.

But the way he said it told me there was much more.

“Older?”

He nodded.

“By six years.”

“What was he like?”

Dante was quiet for a long moment.

Then:

“Brilliant.”

A pause.

“Charming.”

Another pause.

“Dangerous.”

I waited.

“He was everything my father wanted.”

Dante's expression darkened.

“And everything I wasn't.”

That surprised me.

“You?”

“Yes.”

He looked at the city outside.

“My father believed power belonged to people willing to take it.”

“And Adrian was?”

“Exactly that.”

I understood.

Some people were born wanting control.

Adrian sounded like that kind of person.

“What happened?”

Dante's jaw tightened.

“The night my father died, Adrian disappeared.”

“Why?”

“Nobody knew.”

“You thought he was dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dante looked at me.

“Because I found his blood.”

The room went silent.

“But not his body.”

A chill moved through me.

“Someone wanted you to think he died.”

“Yes.”

“And now he's back.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the message.

“He knows about me.”

Dante nodded.

“That is the part I don't understand.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian should not know about the Belladonna heir.”

I frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because that information was buried before he disappeared.”

A cold feeling entered my chest.

“So someone told him.”

Dante's eyes sharpened.

“Exactly.”

The room became silent.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

There was another traitor.

Someone close.

Someone with access to secrets.

Someone who had been moving pieces while everyone else thought the game was over.

Later that night, Dante found me in the library.

I wasn't sleeping.

Again.

Apparently, sleep was something my old life had taken from me permanently.

I sat surrounded by books and files.

Family histories.

Old photographs.

Documents.

My entire life was suddenly contained inside folders.

Dante entered quietly.

“You should rest.”

I looked up.

“You always say that.”

“Because you never do.”

A small smile almost appeared.

Almost.

He sat across from me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“Do you regret saving me?”

The question surprised him.

“No.”

“You don't even need to think?”

“No.”

“Why?”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Because the first time I saw you…”

I waited.

“You were terrified.”

I looked away.

“And?”

“And you still walked toward me.”

I remembered that night.

The ballroom.

Nolan.

The kiss.

The moment I stopped running.

“I thought you were my escape.”

Dante's expression changed slightly.

“And now?”

I looked at the files.

“I think you might be the person standing closest to the fire with me.”

For a moment…

neither of us moved.

Because the truth was simple.

We weren't safe together.

But somehow…

we felt safer together.

That was the most dangerous part.

Dante stood.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere you need to see.”

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at an old building outside the city.

It looked abandoned.

Forgotten.

But when Dante opened the door…

I realized it wasn't abandoned.

It was preserved.

Photographs covered the walls.

Documents filled shelves.

And in the center of the room…

was a portrait.

A woman.

A beautiful woman with my eyes.

My breath stopped.

“My mother.”

Dante nodded.

“This was your father's private archive.”

I walked closer.

“How did you find this?”

“My father had it.”

I looked at him.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“The man everyone says destroyed my family.”

Dante didn't answer.

Because the answer was complicated.

I looked around.

There were hundreds of files.

Then I saw one.

My name.

ELENA DE LUCA

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Reports.

Medical records.

And one letter.

Addressed to me.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Dante.

“Someone knew I would find this.”

“Yes.”

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

My mother.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

My dear Elena,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

I couldn't breathe.

I continued.

But before you hate me, before you judge me, you must understand one thing.

Your father and I did not create an empire to control Chicago.

We created it because we discovered the truth.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

The next sentence changed everything.

The person who destroyed our family was not Adrian Moretti.

I looked at Dante.

He was reading over my shoulder.

The next words appeared.

It was someone inside our own bloodline.

Silence.

I turned the page.

Only one sentence remained.

One sentence written so heavily it looked almost desperate.

Elena, never trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.

My heart stopped.

Because those words weren't advice.

They were a warning.

A warning about everyone.

Including Dante.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because if my mother was right…

then the person who saved me might also be the person I should fear.

And before I could say anything…

the lights went out.

A voice came from the darkness.

A voice I had never heard.

But Dante recognized immediately.

“Brother.”

Dante froze.

A figure stepped into the room.

Older.

Scarred.

Smiling.

Adrian Moretti.

Alive.

He looked at Dante.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“So…”

He said softly.

“The last Belladonna heir finally found the truth.”

I couldn't move.

Dante stepped in front of me.

But Adrian only laughed.

“Still protecting people you don't understand.”

A pause.

“Just like Father wanted.”

Dante's face changed.

“What did you say?”

Adrian smiled.

“Ask her.”

He pointed at me.

“Ask Elena who her father really was.”

My blood went cold.

Because I already knew.

May you like

Whatever he was about to say…

would destroy the last piece of my identity.
