Chapter 7 â Adrian Chooses the Wrong Side

The Blackwell mansion had always been a place of control.
Every room was designed to impress.
Every painting represented generations of success.
Every piece of furniture carried a story about wealth and influence.
But tonight...
For the first time in his life...
Adrian Blackwell felt like a stranger inside his own home.
Because everything he believed about his family was beginning to collapse.
The name.
The legacy.
The empire.
All of it was built on secrets.
And the woman who knew those secrets best...
Was the same woman who destroyed the only person Adrian truly loved.
Adrian stood in his father's old study.
The room was dark except for the small lamp on the desk.
In his hand was the letter from his grandfather.
He had read it dozens of times.
But the words still felt impossible.
"If my family ever forgets the Carter family's sacrifice, they will lose everything they built."
His grandfather had predicted this.
He knew Victoria's obsession with control would eventually destroy them.
And Adrian realized something painful.
The person his grandfather warned him about...
Was his own mother.
The door opened.
Victoria entered.
She looked calm.
Almost too calm.
"Still reading that old letter?"
Adrian didn't look up.
"How long did you know?"
Victoria stopped.
"Know what?"
"That Richard Carter saved this company."
Silence.
"That my grandfather promised him ownership."
Another silence.
"That you erased his name from history."
Victoria slowly walked closer.
"Adrian."
Her voice softened.
"You are letting one woman manipulate you."
His head lifted.
"Emma didn't tell me this."
That surprised her.
"Then who?"
"My grandfather."
For the first time...
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
Adrian noticed.
And it hurt.
Because he spent his entire life believing his mother was invincible.
Now he saw something else.
She wasn't invincible.
She was afraid.
"You don't understand what happened."
Victoria walked toward the window.
"The world doesn't reward kindness."
She looked at the city.
"It rewards winners."
Adrian shook his head.
"So you betrayed everyone because you wanted to win?"
"No."
She turned.
"I protected this family."
"By destroying another?"
Victoria's expression hardened.
"Richard was too idealistic."
"He believed companies should be built on trust."
She laughed quietly.
"Trust doesn't protect an empire."
Adrian stared at her.
"And fear does?"
Victoria said nothing.
Because that was exactly what she believed.
Fear.
Control.
Power.
Those were the foundations she built her entire life on.
Meanwhile...
Emma sat in her office reviewing the documents Daniel had collected.
The more she discovered...
The worse it became.
Victoria hadn't simply removed her father's name.
She had manipulated records.
Bribed officials.
Hidden contracts.
Destroyed reputations.
People had lost everything because Victoria wanted complete control.
Daniel placed another file on the desk.
"This is the last piece."
Emma looked up.
"What is it?"
"The original shareholder agreement."
She opened it.
Then froze.
Because there was a section she had never seen before.
A section involving Adrian.
Her eyes moved across the page.
"The future Blackwell heir must marry into the Carter family bloodline to maintain the original partnership agreement."
Emma stopped breathing.
"What?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your engagement wasn't random."
Emma looked at him.
"Explain."
"The Blackwell family knew the Carter connection mattered."
He paused.
"Adrian's grandfather created a condition."
Emma stared at the document.
"So Adrian..."
"Was never supposed to marry you because of love."
Daniel's voice softened.
"The marriage was part of the agreement."
The room became silent.
Emma felt something inside her break.
Not because of the business.
Not because of the documents.
But because of Adrian.
Because suddenly she didn't know what was real anymore.
Was their love real?
Or was she just another piece on a family chessboard?
That evening...
Adrian went to see Emma.
Not at a mansion.
Not at a company.
At the small coffee shop where they first met.
The same place where they spent hours talking about dreams.
The same place where Adrian told her:
"With you, I don't feel like a Blackwell."
When Emma arrived, she saw him sitting alone.
For a moment...
She almost remembered the old Adrian.
But then she remembered the wedding.
She sat across from him.
"What do you want?"
Adrian looked exhausted.
"I wanted to apologize."
Emma said nothing.
"I should have defended you."
A pause.
"I should have stopped my mother."
Emma looked at him.
"Yes."
The simple answer hurt him.
Because she didn't comfort him.
Didn't tell him it was okay.
Because it wasn't.
"I was wrong."
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"I thought you needed me."
Emma looked away.
"You thought I needed your name."
He lowered his eyes.
"Maybe."
"And now?"
He looked at her.
"Now I know I lost someone who never needed anything from me."
For a moment...
There was honesty.
Real honesty.
But then...
His phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Victoria.
He ignored it.
The phone rang again.
And again.
Finally, he answered.
"What?"
Victoria's voice came through.
"Come home."
"Not now."
"Adrian."
Her tone changed.
"Do you want to save this family or destroy it?"
He closed his eyes.
Emma watched him.
And she already knew.
This was the moment.
The moment where Adrian had to choose.
Her.
Or them.
Twenty minutes later...
Adrian stood inside the Blackwell mansion.
Victoria was waiting.
Along with the board members.
"What is this?"
Victoria looked at him.
"You need to make a statement."
Adrian frowned.
"About what?"
"About Emma."
Silence.
A document was placed in front of him.
A public statement.
It claimed Emma had manipulated him.
It claimed the Carter family was attacking Blackwell Holdings.
It claimed Adrian supported his family's actions.
He stared at the paper.
Then looked at his mother.
"You want me to sign this?"
Victoria nodded.
"It protects us."
Adrian picked up the pen.
For a moment...
He hesitated.
He thought about Emma.
Her parents in the pool.
Her walking away.
Her saying she returned the ring.
He thought about everything.
Then...
He signed.
The next morning...
Every news channel reported the same headline.
"Adrian Blackwell Denounces Emma Carter's Claims Against His Family."
Emma saw the announcement from her office.
She read the statement.
Every word.
Every lie.
Every accusation.
Daniel watched her carefully.
"Emma..."
She put the phone down.
Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
"He chose."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
She looked out the window.
For years, she had waited for Adrian to become the man she believed he could be.
But now she understood.
Some people didn't lose themselves because they were forced to.
They lost themselves because they chose.
Emma removed the old photograph from her desk.
The one showing Victoria holding her as a baby.
Then she placed it into a drawer.
"Daniel."
"Yes?"
"Start the next phase."
He nodded.
"The board?"
"No."
Emma looked toward Blackwell Tower.
"The empire."
At Blackwell Holdings...
Adrian walked into his office.
He expected relief.
He expected victory.
Instead...
He felt empty.
His assistant entered.
"Mr. Blackwell."
"What?"
"There is a problem."
Adrian looked up.
"The investors received a new document."
"What document?"
The assistant placed it on his desk.
Adrian opened it.
And his face turned pale.
Because it wasn't from Emma.
It wasn't from the Carter family.
It was from the Blackwell board.
Emergency Leadership Review.
The board was questioning his position as CEO.
The man who defended his family...
Was now being sacrificed by them.
And at the bottom of the document was one sentence:
"The Blackwell empire requires a leader who can protect its future."
Adrian slowly sat down.
Because he finally understood.
He chose his family.
But his family...
Had never truly chosen him.
Across the city...
Emma received a message.
"Phase One complete."
She looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
"Now they will understand."
Because the first strike was not meant to destroy Blackwell.
It was meant to reveal something far more painful.
The Blackwell family had spent decades building an empire.
But they had forgotten the one thing every empire needed.
A foundation.
May you like
And Emma Carter...
Was about to remove it.
