Chapter 5 — The First Strike Against Blackwell

The photograph stayed on Emma Carter’s desk for almost an hour.

She didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't even reach for her coffee.

Because some truths didn't arrive like explosions.

They arrived quietly.

A single image.

A few words.

A question that refused to disappear.

Your father never told you everything.

Emma stared at the photograph again.

A younger Victoria Blackwell.

Standing beside her father.

Richard Carter.

And between them...

A baby.

Her.

Emma's fingers tightened around the edges of the picture.

The woman in the photograph looked different.

Not the cold, powerful matriarch who humiliated her parents at the wedding.

Not the woman who believed money gave her the right to judge others.

This Victoria looked younger.

Almost human.

Almost kind.

And that frightened Emma more than anything.

Because it meant Victoria wasn't always this person.

Something happened.

Something changed her.

Something connected her to Emma's family in a way nobody had ever revealed.

The office door opened.

Daniel Hayes walked in carrying a tablet.

He immediately noticed Emma's expression.

"What happened?"

Emma silently handed him the photograph.

Daniel looked at it.

And for the first time since she met him...

He had no words.

"Where did you get this?"

"It was waiting on my desk."

Daniel turned the photo over.

He read the message.

His expression darkened.

"This wasn't an accident."

Emma looked at him.

"You think Victoria sent it?"

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"Victoria would never reveal something that could hurt her."

He placed the photograph down.

"Someone wants you to find this."

Emma looked toward the window.

"And someone wants me to know there are secrets even my father kept."

That evening, Emma returned to her parents' house.

Richard Carter was sitting in his workshop.

The same small room where he spent decades repairing old watches.

A simple man.

A careful man.

A man who had built a fortune but never cared about showing it.

When he saw Emma walk in...

He immediately knew.

"You found something."

Emma stopped.

That sentence told her everything.

"You knew?"

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

"I hoped you would never have to."

Emma placed the photograph on the table.

Her father's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You remember this."

Richard looked at the photo.

"Yes."

"Who is the baby?"

Silence.

Emma's heart sank.

Because she already knew the answer.

But she needed him to say it.

Richard looked at her.

"You."

The room became completely quiet.

Emma sat down slowly.

"Why was Victoria holding me?"

Her father looked away.

"Because she was there when you were born."

Emma frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Richard sighed.

"Your mother and I didn't tell you the entire story because we wanted you to have a normal life."

Emma laughed softly.

"A normal life?"

She pointed at the photo.

"I was engaged to the heir of the family that destroyed us."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"And I never knew they were connected to me."

Richard reached for her hand.

"Emma..."

"No."

She pulled back.

"I deserve the truth."

Her father closed his eyes.

Then finally said:

"Thirty-two years ago, before Blackwell Holdings became an empire..."

He paused.

"Victoria and I were partners."

Emma froze.

"What?"

"Not romantic partners."

Richard clarified quickly.

"Business partners."

He looked at the photograph.

"Your grandfather trusted me. He trusted Victoria. Together, we built the company."

Emma listened carefully.

"Then what happened?"

Richard's expression became painful.

"Power changed Victoria."

Meanwhile...

At Blackwell Tower.

Victoria stood before the executive board.

The atmosphere was tense.

"The Carter situation must be contained."

One executive looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Blackwell, if the documents are legitimate, we cannot ignore them."

Victoria's eyes moved toward him.

"Do you know why Blackwell Holdings survived this long?"

Nobody answered.

"Because we never allowed weakness to control us."

She placed her hands on the table.

"Emma Carter is emotional."

A board member frowned.

"She doesn't seem emotional."

Victoria smiled.

"That is because you don't know her."

She looked around the room.

"Everyone has a weakness."

A pause.

"And I know hers."

The next morning, every major financial news network reported the same headline.

"Carter Family Challenges Blackwell Holdings Ownership Claims."

The market reacted immediately.

Investors became nervous.

Shares began dropping.

Blackwell executives panicked.

And Adrian watched the numbers fall from his office window.

For the first time in his career...

He felt powerless.

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Blackwell?"

He turned.

"What?"

"The investors want a statement."

Adrian looked at the screen.

The company's value was dropping.

Not because of Emma.

Because of uncertainty.

Because the truth was finally becoming visible.

"What should I tell them?"

His assistant waited.

Adrian had always known what to say.

But today...

He didn't.

Later that afternoon, Adrian found Emma outside the Carter Foundation building.

"Emma."

She stopped.

But didn't turn around.

"What do you want?"

His voice softened.

"I need to talk."

"You had years to talk."

He swallowed.

"I didn't know."

Emma turned.

"That is your excuse?"

"No."

He looked at her.

"I should have known."

For a moment, Emma saw the man she used to love.

The man beneath the Blackwell name.

But then she remembered the wedding.

Her parents in the pool.

His silence.

And the ring leaving her finger.

"You didn't need to know about the documents to defend me."

Adrian had no answer.

Because she was right.

Emma stepped closer.

"You watched my parents get humiliated."

"I know."

"You stood there."

"I know."

"You let me walk away alone."

His voice became quiet.

"I'm sorry."

Emma looked at him.

The apology sounded real.

But real apologies did not erase real damage.

"Sorry doesn't change what happened."

She walked away.

Adrian watched her leave.

And he finally understood something.

The woman he lost wasn't the woman who needed him.

She was the woman who once believed in him.

And he destroyed that belief himself.

That night...

Victoria received a message.

"We found something about Emma Carter."

She opened the file.

Her expression changed.

Inside was information about Emma's childhood.

Her education.

Her career.

Her relationships.

Everything.

Then she saw one detail.

A detail that made her smile.

Because finally...

She found Emma's weakness.

Victoria picked up her phone.

"Prepare everything."

The assistant answered.

"For what?"

Victoria looked at Emma's picture.

"For the moment when the world learns who Emma Carter really is."

At the same time...

Emma sat alone in her office.

The photograph remained on her desk.

She turned it over again.

But this time...

She noticed something she missed before.

A small symbol in the corner.

A Blackwell family seal.

And underneath it...

A handwritten date.

The date wasn't her birth date.

It was six months earlier.

Emma's face changed.

Because that meant one thing.

Victoria wasn't just connected to her past.

Victoria was connected to something that happened before she was born.

Something her parents had hidden.

Something powerful enough to destroy both families.

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

"Emma."

His voice sounded serious.

"You need to come here."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because I found the original Blackwell archives."

Emma stood.

"And?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"There is a file with your name on it."

Emma froze.

"What file?"

Daniel answered:

"The Carter Child Agreement."

The line went silent.

Because Emma realized...

May you like

The Blackwell empire wasn't the only thing built on secrets.

Her entire life was.
