Chapter 17 — The Truth Thomas Blackwell Buried

The phone slipped slightly from Emma's hand.
For several seconds...
She couldn't move.
Couldn't process what she had just heard.
Because the voice on the other end belonged to someone who shouldn't exist.
Eleanor Blackwell.
Thomas Blackwell's wife.
Adrian's grandmother.
A woman who had supposedly died twenty years ago.
Yet somehow...
She knew Emma.
She knew the trust.
And she knew the truth behind the Blackwell empire.
"Emma?"
Adrian's voice pulled her back.
She looked at him.
His face was filled with concern.
"What happened?"
Emma slowly lowered the phone.
"I just received a call."
"From who?"
She looked at him.
"Eleanor Blackwell."
The color drained from Adrian's face.
"What?"
Richard immediately stood.
"That's impossible."
Emma stared at everyone.
"That is exactly what I thought."
The room became tense.
Because everyone understood one thing.
The Blackwell family had survived for decades because of one rule:
The dead stayed buried.
But tonight...
Someone who was supposed to be gone had returned.
And she brought a truth that could change everything.
"Where did she call from?"
Daniel asked.
Emma checked her phone.
"Private number."
"Can we trace it?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not easily."
Charles, who was being watched by police officers nearby, suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
Charles smiled.
"So she finally decided to appear."
Emma looked at him.
"You know about Eleanor?"
Charles smiled.
"I know about everyone."
Adrian stepped toward him.
"What does my grandmother have to do with this?"
Charles looked at him.
"Everything."
The police officers moved Charles away.
But before leaving, he stopped beside Emma.
"You wanted the truth."
His voice lowered.
"Be careful."
Emma stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because the truth about Thomas Blackwell..."
A pause.
"Is the truth that destroyed everyone."
After Charles was taken away...
Nobody left.
Because the mystery had only grown bigger.
Emma looked at Adrian.
"Did you know your grandmother might still be alive?"
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
His voice was full of disbelief.
"My father told me she died after an illness."
Alexander remained silent.
Emma noticed.
"Alexander."
Everyone looked at him.
"You knew something."
Alexander looked exhausted.
"I knew she disappeared."
"Not died?"
"No."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"Then why did you let everyone believe she was dead?"
Alexander looked away.
"Because Eleanor wanted it that way."
The next morning...
Emma received another message.
No number.
Only coordinates.
And four words.
"Come alone. Trust me."
She knew immediately.
Eleanor.
Adrian refused to let her go alone.
"I'm coming."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"Emma—"
"This is my family."
He stopped.
Because he understood.
For years, everyone had fought over her life.
Now she needed to face her own truth.
"But I'll be nearby."
Emma looked at him.
After everything...
She still wasn't ready to trust him completely.
But she saw something different.
He wasn't trying to control her.
He was trying to protect her.
"Fine."
The location was an old Blackwell estate.
Abandoned.
Hidden deep outside the city.
A place that once belonged to the founders of the empire.
Emma walked inside.
The air smelled like old wood and forgotten memories.
Then she heard a voice.
"You look exactly like your mother."
Emma stopped.
An elderly woman stepped out.
Silver hair.
Calm eyes.
A tired but powerful presence.
Eleanor Blackwell.
Alive.
Emma couldn't speak.
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"I know what you're thinking."
"Everyone thought you were dead."
Eleanor nodded.
"That was the plan."
"Why?"
"Because someone wanted me gone."
Emma immediately asked:
"Charles?"
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
That surprised her.
"Then who?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"Thomas."
Emma froze.
"My grandfather?"
Eleanor walked toward an old table.
On it were boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Memories.
"Thomas didn't trust the people around him."
Emma looked confused.
"He trusted my father."
"No."
Eleanor shook her head.
"He trusted his dream."
She opened one box.
"Not his family."
Inside were dozens of letters.
All written by Thomas.
Emma picked one up.
The first sentence made her heart stop.
"If Emma Carter ever reads this, then I have failed."
She continued.
"I created the Blackwell empire with one mistake."
"I believed a family name could protect a legacy."
Emma looked up.
Eleanor continued:
"Your grandfather realized too late that power destroys families."
Emma read another letter.
"The Blackwell name became more important than the people it was supposed to serve."
"My son Alexander wanted control."
"My wife Victoria wanted survival."
"My advisors wanted influence."
"Even Richard wanted protection."
"Everyone wanted something."
Emma swallowed.
"Except you?"
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"Except me."
"Then why did you disappear?"
Eleanor looked toward the window.
"Because Thomas asked me to."
Emma froze.
"Why?"
"Because he knew the only person who could fix everything..."
She looked at Emma.
"Was you."
Emma shook her head.
"I don't understand."
Eleanor opened the final document.
"The original Blackwell-Carter trust."
Emma looked at it.
This was different from the others.
No corporate language.
No conditions.
Only one statement.
The future of Blackwell Holdings belongs to the person who protects both families, not the person who controls them.
Emma looked up.
"That's why the trust was created."
Eleanor nodded.
"Thomas didn't want an heir."
"He wanted a guardian."
Emma stared at the document.
"Why me?"
Eleanor smiled.
"Because you were the only person born into both worlds."
Emma frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Eleanor reached into another box.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Emma looked.
Her mother.
Her father.
Thomas.
Victoria.
And a baby.
Her.
But something was different.
On the back was a handwritten note.
"The Carter daughter carries the Blackwell future."
Emma's hands trembled.
Then Eleanor said something unexpected.
"There is one more thing you need to know."
"What?"
Eleanor's expression became serious.
"Adrian was never supposed to marry you for love."
Emma froze.
"What?"
Eleanor continued:
"The original agreement had a condition."
Her voice lowered.
"If Emma Carter and Adrian Blackwell united..."
"The trust would become permanent."
Emma stepped back.
"So our marriage..."
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"Your marriage was real."
"But someone manipulated the timing."
Emma looked confused.
"Who?"
Eleanor looked toward the door.
Emma followed her gaze.
And her blood ran cold.
Because standing there...
Was someone she never expected.
Someone who had been missing from the story.
Someone who knew every secret.
Alexander Blackwell.
But he wasn't alone.
Behind him stood another person.
A person Emma recognized immediately.
A person she thought she would never see again.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
The woman smiled sadly.
"Hello, Emma."
Emma couldn't breathe.
Because the woman standing there...
Was supposed to be dead.
Evelyn Carter's older sister.
The aunt nobody ever mentioned.
The woman erased from every family record.
Eleanor whispered:
"Now you understand."
Emma looked between them.
"Understand what?"
Eleanor's voice became heavy.
"The Blackwell empire was never destroyed by one enemy."
"It was destroyed by a family secret that began before you were born."
Emma looked at the woman.
"Who are you?"
The woman stepped forward.
"My name is Clara Carter."
She paused.
"And I am the reason your parents lost everything."
Emma felt the ground disappear beneath her.
Because the final enemy...
May you like
Wasn't outside the family.
It was inside.
