Chapter 18 â The Sister Who Betrayed the Carter Family

The abandoned Blackwell estate became completely silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came before a storm.
Emma Carter stared at the woman standing in front of her.
A woman she had never met.
A woman whose name had never appeared in family conversations.
A woman who supposedly disappeared from history.
Clara Carter.
Her mother's older sister.
The person Eleanor Blackwell claimed was responsible for the collapse of both families.
Emma wanted to reject it.
She wanted to believe this was another manipulation.
Another lie.
Another person using her family's pain for their own purpose.
But deep down...
She knew.
Because every person who had hidden a secret from her had always carried the same expression.
Regret.
"You're my mother's sister?"
Emma finally asked.
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
"Why have I never heard of you?"
Clara looked down.
"Because your mother made sure you never would."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"My mother?"
A painful smile appeared on Clara's face.
"She wanted you to hate me."
Emma felt a chill.
"Why?"
Clara looked toward Eleanor.
Then at Alexander.
Then back at Emma.
"Because sometimes the easiest way to hide the truth..."
A pause.
"...is to create a villain."
Emma stepped closer.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
Clara answered immediately.
That surprised her.
"I don't expect you to believe anything."
She pointed toward the boxes on the table.
"I brought proof."
Clara opened an old leather folder.
Inside were letters.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Documents.
The same kind of evidence that had followed Emma through this entire nightmare.
Except these documents were different.
They were personal.
Family records.
Private conversations.
Things never meant to be seen.
"Before your mother married Richard..."
Clara began.
"Before the Blackwell partnership..."
"Before you were born..."
"There were two Carter sisters."
Emma looked at her.
"Evelyn and Clara."
Clara smiled sadly.
"Your mother was always the responsible one."
"She followed rules."
"She believed in doing what was right."
She paused.
"I didn't."
Emma remained silent.
Clara continued.
"I was smarter than her."
The words surprised everyone.
Not because of arrogance.
Because of honesty.
"I was more ambitious."
"I wanted recognition."
"I wanted people to know the Carter name."
Emma asked:
"And that led you to Charles?"
Clara nodded.
"Charles found me when nobody else believed in me."
Her voice became softer.
"He told me I deserved more."
"He told me the Blackwells had everything because people like us were always standing behind them."
Emma understood.
The same words Charles had used for years.
Power.
Unfairness.
Revenge.
"He manipulated you."
Clara looked at her.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But I let him."
The admission shocked Emma.
Because everyone else had spent years explaining their choices.
Their reasons.
Their excuses.
Clara didn't.
She accepted it.
"I gave Charles information."
Emma's face changed.
"What information?"
"The Carter family's financial weaknesses."
"The Blackwell partnership agreements."
"Everything."
Her voice broke.
"I thought I was creating an opportunity."
"Instead..."
She looked around the room.
"I destroyed everyone."
Emma looked at Eleanor.
"You knew?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Thomas discovered the truth."
"When?"
"Before his death."
Emma froze.
"Then why didn't he expose her?"
Clara answered.
"Because he believed I could change."
Emma looked at her.
"And did you?"
Clara smiled sadly.
"Too late."
Outside the estate...
Adrian stood near the car.
He had followed Emma from a distance.
Not because he didn't trust her.
Because he knew danger followed the truth.
When he saw Alexander leaving earlier, he knew something was happening.
Then he saw the woman.
Clara Carter.
And he understood.
Another missing piece.
Another person who had shaped their lives.
Inside...
Emma turned toward Alexander.
"You knew about Clara."
Alexander nodded.
"For years."
"And you said nothing?"
He looked ashamed.
"Because exposing her would have destroyed Evelyn."
Emma stared.
"Everyone protected everyone."
A bitter smile appeared.
"And somehow..."
"Nobody protected the truth."
Clara walked toward Emma.
"I need you to understand something."
Emma looked at her.
"I never hated your family."
"Then why?"
Clara looked at the floor.
"Because I was jealous."
The answer was simple.
Painfully simple.
"I watched Evelyn become everything I wanted to be."
"A loving wife."
"A respected woman."
"A mother."
She looked at Emma.
"Then you were born."
Emma stayed silent.
"And everyone loved you."
Clara whispered.
"Even Thomas Blackwell."
Emma understood.
The entire war...
Had started with something painfully human.
Envy.
Not power.
Not money.
Not business.
Just one person believing someone else had received what they deserved.
"But Charles..."
Emma said.
"He used you."
Clara nodded.
"He did."
"Then why are you helping me now?"
For a long moment...
Clara said nothing.
Then:
"Because I saw what he became."
She looked at the floor.
"And I realized I wasn't his victim."
A pause.
"I was his first weapon."
Suddenly...
A loud sound came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Daniel rushed inside.
"Emma!"
Everyone looked at him.
His face was pale.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at Alexander.
Then at Clara.
Then at Emma.
"We have a problem."
Emma stepped forward.
"What?"
Daniel handed her a tablet.
"The bankruptcy announcement was fake."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Daniel continued:
"Someone leaked false financial information."
Adrian frowned.
"Then why?"
"Because while everyone was distracted..."
Daniel opened another file.
A transfer record appeared.
Emma stared.
A company acquisition.
A hidden buyer.
The name at the top made everyone silent.
WHITMORE INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS
Emma's expression changed.
"Charles?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Someone else."
Emma looked confused.
"Who?"
Daniel zoomed in.
The buyer's identity appeared.
Everyone froze.
Because the person who purchased the damaged Blackwell assets...
Was not a stranger.
It was someone they knew.
Someone who had been watching from the beginning.
Alexander whispered:
"No..."
Emma looked at him.
"Who?"
Alexander's face became pale.
"The person who taught Charles everything."
A pause.
"The original architect behind all of this."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Because she knew the name.
The name buried for decades.
The name Thomas Blackwell tried to erase.
Then she whispered:
"Victor Whitmore."
Emma frowned.
"Who is that?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"Charles' father."
Silence.
Emma felt her stomach tighten.
"Charles wasn't the beginning."
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
"He was only continuing his father's plan."
Adrian looked at the documents.
"So the entire war..."
"Started before us."
Eleanor nodded.
"Before Charles."
"Before Victoria."
"Before your parents."
Then Emma's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
She answered.
A deep voice spoke.
Older than Charles.
Colder.
More powerful.
"Emma Carter."
She froze.
"Who is this?"
The voice replied:
"The man who built the game you're trying to end."
A pause.
"You defeated my son."
Emma's grip tightened.
"Victor Whitmore?"
The voice laughed softly.
"So you know my name."
Silence.
Then:
"Good."
"Because now you finally understand..."
"The person you've been fighting..."
"Was never the real enemy."
The call ended.
Emma looked at everyone.
For the first time...
Nobody had answers.
Not Alexander.
Not Eleanor.
Not even Clara.
May you like
Because the final battle had just begun.
And the enemy had been waiting longer than anyone imagined.
