Chapter 10 — The Truth About Emma’s Parents

The letter sat on Emma Carter’s desk all night.

She didn't open it again.

She didn't need to.

The words were already burned into her mind.

"I was not the woman who destroyed your family."

"I was the woman who stopped your family from destroying you."

For years, Emma had believed she understood her story.

She was Richard and Evelyn Carter's daughter.

She grew up in a loving home.

She met Adrian Blackwell.

She fell in love.

Then she discovered the Blackwell family was built on betrayal.

It was simple.

Good people.

Bad people.

Victims.

Enemies.

But now...

The lines were disappearing.

Because the woman she hated most might have been protecting her.

And the people she trusted most...

Had hidden the truth.

At six in the morning, Emma drove to her parents' house.

She didn't call first.

She didn't announce she was coming.

She needed answers before anyone had time to prepare another explanation.

When Richard opened the door, he immediately knew.

One look at her face.

One look at the letter in her hand.

And he understood.

"You spoke with Victoria."

Emma stepped inside.

"Yes."

Her father's expression changed.

Evelyn came from the kitchen.

"What happened?"

Emma placed the letter on the table.

"I want the truth."

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirmed everything.

Emma looked at both of them.

"No more protecting me."

Her voice shook slightly.

"No more deciding what I can handle."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"Emma..."

"Why was Victoria at my birth?"

Her parents froze.

"Why did she sign my birth certificate?"

Another pause.

"Why did she save my life?"

Evelyn covered her mouth.

A tear formed in her eyes.

Because after thirty-two years...

The secret had finally reached the surface.

Richard slowly sat down.

"Your mother and I always wanted to tell you."

Emma looked at him.

"But you didn't."

"No."

He admitted.

"We were afraid."

"Of what?"

Richard looked at the letter.

"Of what the truth would do to you."

Emma laughed quietly.

"Do you know what hurts the most?"

Her parents looked at her.

"I spent my entire life believing I was protected because you trusted me."

She paused.

"But you protected me because you thought I was fragile."

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

"We were wrong."

Emma sat down.

"Tell me everything."

Thirty-two years earlier...

Richard Carter was not just a businessman.

He was a man with a vision.

He believed companies should be built around people.

Not power.

Not greed.

Not family names.

That was why Thomas Blackwell trusted him.

Together, they created the foundation of Blackwell Industries.

But there was one person who disagreed.

Victoria.

At the time, she wasn't the cold woman everyone feared.

She was brilliant.

Ambitious.

Determined.

But she believed one thing:

The Blackwell name should always remain above everyone else.

Even partners.

Even friends.

Even those who saved them.

"When Thomas Blackwell became sick, everything changed."

Richard looked at Emma.

"Victoria started preparing for control."

"She believed if she didn't take over, the company would fall apart."

Emma listened carefully.

"But my father didn't fight her?"

Richard shook his head.

"Thomas trusted her."

He sighed.

"He thought she would protect his legacy."

Emma looked down.

"And she didn't."

"Not completely."

Richard corrected.

Emma looked surprised.

"What does that mean?"

Her father took a deep breath.

"Victoria made mistakes."

"Big ones."

"But she wasn't the only person involved."

Emma frowned.

"What are you saying?"

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

Then back at Emma.

"Your biological connection to the Blackwell family is more complicated than you know."

The room went completely silent.

Emma felt her heartbeat increase.

"What?"

Richard continued.

"When you were born, there was a medical complication."

Emma listened.

"Your mother almost lost you."

Evelyn wiped her tears.

"The doctors said we might not make it."

Emma reached for her mother's hand.

"And Victoria?"

Richard nodded.

"She was there."

"Why?"

"Because Thomas Blackwell asked her to come."

Emma frowned.

"Why would he care about me?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because you were important."

"Why?"

A long pause.

Then Richard said:

"Because before you were born, Thomas changed his will."

Emma froze.

"His will?"

Richard nodded.

"He created a protection clause."

"What kind of clause?"

"The Carter child would have legal protection over the original partnership."

Emma stared.

"So me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Richard looked at her.

"Because Thomas knew Victoria wanted complete control."

Emma finally understood.

Her birth wasn't just a family event.

It was connected to the future of Blackwell Holdings.

She wasn't just a daughter.

She was a safeguard.

A living reminder of a promise.

"But why did Victoria save me?"

Richard looked away.

"Because she regretted what she had done."

Emma was silent.

Richard continued.

"After Thomas died, Victoria discovered documents proving she had gone too far."

"She realized she was destroying the very thing Thomas trusted her to protect."

Emma whispered:

"So she changed?"

Richard nodded.

"For a while."

At that moment...

Emma's phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

"Daniel?"

His voice sounded urgent.

"Emma, you need to see this."

"What happened?"

"I found the original medical records from the night you were born."

Emma stood.

"And?"

A pause.

"Victoria wasn't the only Blackwell there."

Her expression changed.

"Who else?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Adrian's father."

Emma froze.

"What?"

"He was there too."

Silence.

"Emma..."

Daniel continued.

"There is something strange about the records."

"What?"

"The signature authorizing your emergency treatment."

Emma waited.

Then he said:

"It wasn't Richard Carter."

"It wasn't Evelyn Carter."

"It was Adrian Blackwell's father."

Emma felt the world tilt.

Because that changed everything.

Adrian's family wasn't just connected to her business.

They were connected to her life.

That evening...

Emma met Daniel at the archive.

He placed a folder in front of her.

Inside were medical documents.

Old photographs.

And one final letter.

A letter written by Thomas Blackwell.

Emma opened it.

"If something happens to me, protect Emma Carter."

Her eyes moved down.

"Because she is not the threat to this family."

"She is the reason this family still has a future."

Emma stopped.

Then she saw the final sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

"Victoria knows the truth."

"But Adrian does not."

Emma closed the letter.

Because suddenly...

She understood.

Adrian wasn't just the man who betrayed her.

He was also the person who had been kept in the dark.

Just like her.

Meanwhile...

At the Blackwell mansion...

Victoria sat alone.

She held an old photograph.

The same photograph Emma had found.

The one showing her holding baby Emma.

A single tear fell.

For the first time in decades...

The powerful Victoria Blackwell looked broken.

Her assistant entered.

"Mrs. Blackwell?"

Victoria quickly wiped her face.

"What?"

"Adrian wants to speak with you."

She looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

"It's time he knows."

Her assistant frowned.

"Knows what?"

Victoria looked at the photograph.

"The truth about his father."

The next morning...

Adrian arrived at Emma's office.

He looked different.

Not like an heir.

Not like a CEO.

Just a man searching for answers.

"Emma."

She looked up.

"What happened?"

He placed a document on her desk.

"My father's private records."

Emma frowned.

"Why are you showing me this?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Because I found something."

He looked at her.

"And I think it connects both of us."

Emma opened the document.

The first line made her blood run cold.

"Project Carter-Blackwell Protection Agreement."

Below it...

Two names.

Richard Carter.

Thomas Blackwell.

And a third signature.

The one nobody expected.

Alexander Blackwell.

Adrian's father.

Emma looked up.

And for the first time...

Both of them realized the same thing.

Their parents had been hiding the truth from them.

Not because they were enemies.

May you like

But because they were trying to protect them from something much bigger.

Something that could destroy both families forever.
