Chapter 6 - Robert’s Investment
RJM Development Partners had purchased twelve acres outside Raleigh, North Carolina.
Robert’s plan was to build luxury townhouses.
There was one problem.
The land sat partly inside a protected floodplain.
A second problem—
Robert knew before buying it.
A third—
the seller was his longtime business partner.
Emma read the documents with growing disbelief.
“This wasn’t a bad investment.”
Rebecca nodded.
“It was self-dealing.”
Robert used Mercer money to buy overpriced land from an associate who then transferred $80,000 into another Robert-controlled company.
Daniel sat across from them.
His face looked gray.
“I approved the transfer.”
Emma didn’t comfort him.
“Yes.”
“I never saw these documents.”
“No.”
“I should have.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I understand why you can’t trust me.”
