Chapter 18 - The Second Chance Question

Two years after the dinner, Emma and Daniel had coffee.
Not reconciliation.
Not yet.
Daniel asked:
“Do you hate me?”
Emma thought.
“No.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“Mostly.”
His eyes lifted.
“Mostly?”
“I forgive the man who was afraid to disappoint his mother.”
Daniel swallowed.
“And?”
“I’m still angry at the husband who let that fear matter more than me.”
He nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Then he asked the question she knew was coming.
“Could you ever trust me again?”
Emma looked through the café window.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“That’s better than no.”
“Don’t turn uncertainty into hope.”
May you like
“I won’t.”
And for once, he meant it.
