Forgery investigations move slowly.
Until banks become angry.

“She wants to apologize.”
“Then she can write.”
“She wants to see you.”
“No.”

A month later, Emma received Vivian’s letter.
Three pages.
The first page blamed grief.
The second blamed Richard.
The third finally contained one sentence that sounded real.
I hated that you were capable of saving us because it forced me to see how incapable I had become.
Emma read it twice.
