Chapter 16 - Vivian’s Apartment

Vivian moved into a two-bedroom apartment in Westchester.
No staff.
No Mercedes.
No private club.
The first time Daniel visited, she cried because the refrigerator made noise.
He nearly laughed.
Then didn’t.

She began working part-time for a nonprofit resale store through a diversion program connected to her charges.
Vivian Mercer had not held a job in thirty-eight years.
On her first day, someone asked her to mop a spilled drink.
She almost quit.
Then she remembered the judge.
She mopped.
Daniel told Emma later.
Emma smiled.
