Chapter 9 — The Eyes Inside the House

Emily stared at the Polaroid.

Her fingers went numb.

The photograph had been taken from the corner of her bedroom.

She was asleep.

Curled on her side.

One arm wrapped around a pillow.

The bedside clock clearly showed 2:14 A.M.

Emily remembered that night.

Trevor had told her he was flying to Chicago for a conference.

He had sent photographs from the airport.

He had called from what sounded like a hotel lobby.

He had even complained about room service.

But this photograph...

Proved he had never left.

He had been standing in their bedroom while she slept.

Watching her.

Photographing her.

Smiling.

Emily felt her stomach twist.

"I..."

Her voice barely emerged.

"...I don't understand."

Detective Mitchell examined the Polaroid under the streetlight.

"This wasn't mailed."

"No."

"It was placed in your purse."

Emily nodded slowly.

"The only time my purse wasn't with me..."

She froze.

"The restaurant."

Mitchell finished the sentence.

"When Trevor went to take that phone call."

Emily's heartbeat accelerated.

"There wasn't a phone call."

Mitchell looked at her.

"He left the table to put this in your purse."

Emily closed her eyes.

Every movement.

Every smile.

Every apology.

Everything had been part of a performance.

Frank Carter arrived less than fifteen minutes later.

His pickup truck stopped beside the police vehicle.

Before it had fully halted, he was already out of the driver's seat.

"Emily!"

She ran into his arms.

For the first time in years...

She didn't stop herself.

She buried her face against his shoulder and cried with a force that made her entire body shake.

Frank held her without speaking.

He didn't ask questions.

He simply let his daughter cry.

After several minutes, she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

He gently pulled back.

"For what?"

"I should've told you sooner."

Frank cupped her face.

"The only thing that matters..."

He brushed away a tear.

"...is that you told someone."

Emily nodded.

Then handed him the Polaroid.

His expression darkened.

The kindness disappeared from his eyes.

Replacing it was something Emily hadn't seen since childhood.

Protectiveness.

The same look he'd worn when she'd fallen from her bicycle at eight years old.

Only this time...

His little girl wasn't bleeding from scraped knees.

She was bleeding from years of fear.

Frank folded the photograph carefully.

"I'm not letting you go back there."

Mitchell agreed immediately.

"You'll stay somewhere Trevor can't predict."

Emily looked confused.

"My dad's house?"

The detective shook her head.

"Too obvious."

An hour later...

Mitchell drove them to a modest brick building on the edge of town.

No signs.

No markings.

No indication of what it was.

The front door opened before they reached it.

A gray-haired woman in her sixties smiled warmly.

"You must be Emily."

Mitchell nodded.

"This is Martha Reynolds."

"She runs the shelter."

Emily blinked.

"A shelter?"

Martha reached for her hand.

"A safe house."

Emily hesitated.

"I don't belong here."

Martha smiled sadly.

"Every woman who walks through this door says exactly that."

Inside, the building looked nothing like Emily expected.

No rows of beds.

No cold hallways.

Instead...

It looked like a large family home.

Children's drawings decorated the walls.

Fresh coffee filled the air.

Someone was baking cinnamon bread.

Laughter echoed from another room.

Emily stood frozen.

"People actually live here?"

Martha nodded.

"They heal here."

A little boy raced through the hallway carrying a toy dinosaur.

He nearly collided with Emily before stopping.

"Oh."

He looked up.

"I'm sorry."

Emily smiled despite herself.

"It's okay."

The boy grinned.

"My mom says we don't run indoors."

A woman called from the kitchen,

"Tyler!"

"I'm coming!"

He disappeared around the corner.

Emily watched him go.

Martha quietly said,

"He didn't speak for almost a year."

Emily frowned.

"What happened?"

"He watched his father hurt his mother."

Emily felt a lump form in her throat.

"And now?"

"He laughs again."

Later that night...

Emily sat alone in a small bedroom overlooking the shelter's garden.

Everything felt unfamiliar.

Too quiet.

Too peaceful.

She couldn't sleep.

Every sound made her flinch.

Every passing car made her think Trevor had found her.

There was a soft knock.

"Come in."

Rachel stepped inside.

She held two steaming mugs.

"Chamomile tea."

Emily accepted one.

"Thanks."

For several minutes, they sat in silence.

Finally Rachel spoke.

"Do you know what scared me most?"

Emily looked at her.

"It wasn't Trevor."

"It was the first quiet night after I left."

Emily frowned.

"I couldn't sleep."

Rachel stared out the window.

"Because nobody was yelling."

"No doors were slamming."

"No footsteps."

"My brain kept waiting."

Emily whispered,

"I'm doing that now."

Rachel nodded.

"It gets better."

Emily wasn't sure she believed her.

The next morning...

Detective Mitchell arrived carrying several evidence boxes.

Frank was already helping Martha repair a broken fence outside.

Emily joined Mitchell in a small meeting room.

The detective spread photographs across the table.

"This is Trevor's timeline."

Emily leaned forward.

"What timeline?"

"The women."

Emily's breath caught.

Three photographs.

Three names.

Rachel Dawson.

Emily Carter Bennett.

And...

A third woman.

Emily frowned.

"I've never seen her."

"Her name is Olivia Hayes."

"What happened to her?"

Mitchell sighed.

"She dated Trevor for eight months."

Emily looked relieved.

"So she got away."

Mitchell didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened another file.

Inside was a newspaper clipping from seven years earlier.

LOCAL WOMAN KILLED IN SINGLE-CAR ACCIDENT

Emily stared at the photograph.

Olivia.

Twenty-eight years old.

Smiling.

Beautiful.

Her chest tightened.

"It says..."

Emily struggled to finish reading.

"...brake failure."

Mitchell nodded slowly.

"It was ruled an accident."

Rachel's face turned pale.

"I remember her."

Emily looked at her.

"You knew Olivia?"

Rachel nodded.

"She disappeared two weeks before Trevor proposed to me."

Mitchell spoke quietly.

"There was never enough evidence to reopen the investigation."

Emily's heart pounded.

"You think Trevor..."

"We don't know."

The detective's voice remained careful.

"But we found something yesterday."

She slid another photograph across the table.

It showed Olivia's damaged car.

A forensic marker rested beside the driver's seat.

Emily noticed nothing unusual.

Then Mitchell pointed toward the brake pedal.

"A partial fingerprint."

Emily frowned.

"It wasn't identified at the time."

Rachel whispered,

"Technology changed."

Mitchell nodded.

"We resubmitted it for modern analysis."

Emily looked between the two women.

"When will you know?"

Mitchell's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Then looked up.

Her expression had completely changed.

"What is it?" Emily asked.

The detective slowly lowered the phone.

"The lab just called."

Silence filled the room.

"The fingerprint..."

She paused.

"...belongs to Trevor Bennett."

Emily's heart stopped.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Mitchell continued quietly,

"And that's not the only thing."

She turned the phone so they could see the message from the forensic lab.

DNA recovered from beneath Olivia Hayes' broken fingernails also matches Trevor Bennett.

The room fell silent.

Emily suddenly understood something terrifying.

May you like

She hadn't escaped an abusive husband.

She had escaped a man who might have killed before.
