Chapter 17 — The Man Who Refused to Die

Frank dropped the phone.

It struck the concrete floor with a sharp crack.

For a heartbeat, no one spoke.

Emily caught her father before he collapsed completely.

"Dad!"

Frank's face had turned ghostly white.

"My brother..."

His voice broke.

"Michael..."

Detective Laura Mitchell picked up the phone and pressed it back into Frank's trembling hand.

"We're leaving. Now."

Three police vehicles raced toward County Memorial Hospital.

Red and blue lights cut through the evening traffic.

Emily sat beside her father in the back seat.

Neither of them spoke.

Frank stared out the window.

His younger brother was the last close family member he had besides Emily.

Michael had always been the easygoing one.

The uncle who never forgot birthdays.

The man who taught Emily how to fish.

The uncle who always called her "Kiddo," even after she graduated college.

Emily couldn't imagine losing him.

Not because of Trevor.

Not because Trevor wanted to punish her.

Twenty-three minutes later...

They rushed into the hospital emergency department.

A nurse recognized Detective Mitchell immediately.

"This way."

She led them down a brightly lit hallway.

Outside Intensive Care stood a tired-looking physician.

"Family?"

Frank nodded.

"I'm his brother."

The doctor extended his hand.

"Dr. Nathan Lewis."

"I'm afraid Mr. Carter is in critical condition."

Emily swallowed.

"Was it poison?"

The doctor hesitated.

"We're not certain."

"His symptoms strongly suggest exposure to a toxic substance."

"When?"

"Within the last hour."

Mitchell asked,

"Can someone intentionally administer it?"

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

"It's possible."

Emily felt sick.

Frank slowly entered Michael's hospital room.

Machines beeped steadily.

Michael lay unconscious.

A ventilator breathed for him.

IV lines disappeared beneath white blankets.

Frank sat beside the bed.

"I'm here, little brother."

His voice cracked.

"I'm here."

Emily quietly stepped back into the hallway.

She couldn't watch.

Mitchell was already questioning hospital staff.

"When did he arrive?"

"Six thirty-eight."

"Who brought him?"

"An ambulance."

"Witnesses?"

"A neighbor found him unconscious in his driveway."

Mitchell wrote everything down.

Then she asked the question everyone feared.

"Did anyone visit him today?"

The nurse checked the electronic chart.

"There was one visitor."

Emily looked up.

"Who?"

The nurse frowned.

"That's strange."

"What?"

"The visitor signed in under the name..."

She read the screen.

"...Trevor Bennett."

Silence.

Emily felt every drop of blood leave her face.

"He was here?"

The nurse nodded.

"According to the visitor log."

"When?"

"About forty-five minutes before the ambulance arrived."

Mitchell's expression hardened.

"I need security footage."

"Immediately."

Fifteen minutes later...

Hospital security escorted them into the surveillance room.

Dozens of monitors covered one wall.

The security supervisor loaded the footage.

"There."

Camera 12.

Main entrance.

5:41 p.m.

A man wearing a navy business suit entered the hospital.

The image wasn't perfectly clear.

But the build...

The haircut...

The posture...

Looked exactly like Trevor.

Emily whispered,

"That's him."

Mitchell didn't answer.

"Zoom."

The technician enlarged the image.

The man's face remained hidden beneath the brim of a baseball cap.

He signed the visitor register.

Then disappeared toward the elevators.

Camera 27 showed him arriving outside Michael Carter's room.

He entered.

Exactly nine minutes later...

He left.

Walking calmly.

Never looking back.

Emily stared at the screen.

"He poisoned him."

Mitchell shook her head.

"We don't know that."

"But—"

"We don't know."

She forced herself to remain objective.

"The video proves someone dressed like Trevor visited Michael."

"Nothing more."

Emily knew she was right.

But deep down...

She also knew Trevor rarely did anything without a purpose.

An officer hurried into the security room.

"Detective."

Mitchell turned.

"What is it?"

"The lab just called."

She answered immediately.

Laura Mitchell.

She listened for nearly a minute.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

The room grew silent.

Finally she hung up.

"The toxicology results are back."

Emily held her breath.

"It wasn't poison."

"What?"

"The substance was insulin."

Frank frowned.

"My brother isn't diabetic."

Mitchell nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

"A massive insulin injection can be fatal to a healthy person."

Emily whispered,

"So someone injected him."

The doctor nodded grimly.

"Yes."

Just then...

Another detective entered carrying a clear evidence bag.

"We recovered this."

Inside was a disposable insulin syringe.

Found in a trash bin outside Michael's room.

Mitchell examined it carefully.

"Fingerprints?"

"Partial."

"DNA?"

"The lab is rushing it."

Hours passed.

Frank refused to leave his brother's bedside.

Emily sat beside Rachel in the family waiting room.

Neither woman could sleep.

Finally Rachel broke the silence.

"Trevor doesn't just hurt people."

Emily looked over.

"He sends messages."

Rachel nodded.

"When I left him..."

"My sister's house burned down."

Emily frowned.

"I never knew."

"I didn't either."

"Until now."

Rachel stared into her untouched coffee.

"He always makes you believe everything is your fault."

Emily nodded slowly.

"That's how he keeps control."

At 2:13 a.m.

Mitchell's phone rang again.

She answered instantly.

The forensic technician spoke rapidly.

Mitchell's eyes narrowed.

"Repeat that."

Emily stood.

"What happened?"

Mitchell slowly lowered the phone.

"The syringe."

"What about it?"

"There are fingerprints."

Emily's pulse quickened.

"Trevor's?"

Mitchell hesitated.

"No."

Frank looked up.

"Then whose?"

Mitchell took a deep breath.

"The fingerprints belong to..."

She looked at Emily.

"...Michael Carter."

Everyone froze.

Emily frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Mitchell nodded.

"It doesn't."

Frank shook his head violently.

"My brother would never inject himself."

"No."

Mitchell agreed.

"But someone wanted it to look that way."

Just then, the ICU doors burst open.

Dr. Lewis hurried toward them.

"Mr. Carter?"

Frank stood instantly.

"Yes?"

"Your brother regained consciousness."

Emily's eyes filled with relief.

"Can we see him?"

"For a minute."

"But he can barely speak."

Michael looked exhausted.

His skin remained pale.

His breathing was weak.

Yet his eyes were open.

Frank leaned over the bed.

"Mike..."

Michael slowly turned his head.

His lips trembled.

He struggled to form words.

Emily stepped closer.

"Uncle Michael..."

He looked directly at her.

Fear filled his eyes.

He used every ounce of strength he had left to whisper three words.

"Not..."

Another painful breath.

"...Trevor..."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Michael grabbed Frank's wrist.

Then forced out the final sentence before losing consciousness again.

"It..."

"...was..."

"...his mother."

The heart monitor began beeping faster as doctors rushed into the room.

Mitchell stared at Michael in disbelief.

Margaret Bennett.

Not Trevor.

For the first time...

Someone had placed Margaret at the center of the attack.

And if Michael was telling the truth...

May you like

The most dangerous person in the Bennett family had never been Trevor.

It had always been the woman who taught him how.
