Chapter 16 — The List of Survivors

No one in the hidden archive spoke.

Emily stared at the word stamped across her photograph.

PENDING.

The red ink looked fresh.

Almost wet.

As if whoever had placed it there expected to return.

Frank stepped in front of his daughter so quickly that the photograph disappeared from her view.

"You've seen enough."

Emily gently touched his arm.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

Calmer than she felt.

"I need to see all of it."

Mitchell didn't stop her.

She knew something Emily was only beginning to understand.

Fear had ruled Emily's life for three years.

Truth was the only thing powerful enough to replace it.

Crime Scene technicians flooded the hidden room.

Every shelf was photographed.

Every box received an evidence tag.

Every fingerprint was dusted.

Agent Brooks looked around in disbelief.

"I've worked organized crime."

"I've worked serial fraud."

"I've worked political corruption."

He slowly shook his head.

"I've never seen anything like this."

Mitchell agreed.

"This isn't a trophy room."

"No."

"It's a surveillance archive."

Emily carefully opened another folder from her own box.

Every page documented her life.

Her elementary school report cards.

A copy of her college application.

Medical insurance forms.

A list of every apartment she'd rented before meeting Trevor.

Rachel looked over her shoulder.

"How could he have all this?"

Brooks answered quietly.

"He didn't collect it after meeting you."

Emily looked at him.

"What?"

He held up the earliest document.

A school yearbook.

Emily's graduation photo.

Stamped with a date.

Five years before Trevor introduced himself at the charity fundraiser.

Emily stared at the page.

Her heart skipped.

"He..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Brooks did it for her.

"He was watching you long before you knew his name."

Frank's hands began to tremble.

"This wasn't an accident."

Mitchell nodded.

"No."

"He selected her."

Emily looked toward the wall of photographs again.

Rachel's file began seven years before their engagement.

Olivia's started four years before they dated.

Sarah Whitmore's...

Nearly a decade before her death.

Every relationship had begun with surveillance.

Not romance.

Planning.

One of the forensic technicians called out.

"Detective."

Mitchell crossed the room.

"What did you find?"

The technician pointed to the inside cover of a large leather notebook.

"It looks like an index."

Mitchell carefully opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten title.

Candidate Evaluation Log

Below it...

A numbered list.

Every woman had been assigned a file number.

Every woman received a score.

Financial Stability

Family Influence

Emotional Vulnerability

Social Network

Compliance Potential

Emily felt sick.

She found her own name.

Candidate #27

Financial Stability: Moderate

Family Influence: Limited Contact

Emotional Vulnerability: High

Compliance Potential: Excellent

Her breathing became uneven.

Trevor hadn't fallen in love with her.

He had evaluated her.

Like a business investment.

Rachel found her own entry.

She closed the notebook immediately.

"I can't..."

Emily squeezed her hand.

"You don't have to."

Brooks continued examining the shelves.

"Detective."

Mitchell joined him again.

"This archive wasn't created by one person."

She frowned.

"What makes you think that?"

He pointed toward the handwriting.

Some notes were written in Trevor's sharp, slanted script.

Others...

In elegant cursive.

Mitchell compared them with the settlement agreement from Margaret Bennett.

Her stomach tightened.

"It's Margaret."

Frank looked stunned.

"She helped keep records?"

Mitchell nodded slowly.

"Mother and son."

"For years."

Emily wandered deeper into the archive.

At the very back stood a locked steel cabinet.

Unlike everything else...

It required two keys.

Brooks examined it.

"Dual-lock system."

Mitchell frowned.

"Meaning?"

"Two different keys."

"One isn't enough."

Rachel whispered,

"Trevor."

Emily nodded.

"And Margaret."

Brooks smiled slightly.

"Fortunately..."

He reached into his equipment case.

"...locks don't care whose side they're on."

Twenty minutes later...

The cabinet opened.

Inside were only three items.

One thick binder.

One external hard drive.

One sealed manila envelope.

The binder's cover read:

Contingency Plan

Mitchell slowly opened it.

The first page listed names.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Police officers.

Private investigators.

Business executives.

Beside each name was either a green checkmark...

Or a red X.

Frank frowned.

"What is this?"

Mitchell's expression darkened.

"Influence."

Some names included handwritten notes.

Reliable.

Paid.

Avoid.

Replace.

Emily suddenly understood.

Trevor hadn't relied on luck.

He built networks.

People.

Money.

Leverage.

Brooks connected the external hard drive to a forensic laptop.

"It'll take a minute."

The loading bar crawled slowly across the screen.

Finally...

A folder appeared.

Its title made everyone stop breathing.

Project Phoenix

Emily frowned.

"What is Phoenix?"

No one answered.

Brooks clicked.

Only one file existed.

A presentation.

The opening slide displayed the Bennett Holdings logo.

Underneath...

One sentence.

Reputation Recovery Strategy

Mitchell advanced to the next slide.

Every photograph from the archive appeared again.

But now...

Each woman had a status.

Rachel Dawson — Neutralized

Olivia Hayes — Closed

Emily Carter — Active

Frank slammed his fist onto a shelf.

"Closed?"

"What the hell does 'Closed' mean?"

Mitchell didn't answer.

Because she already feared the answer.

Then came the final slide.

A timeline.

Future dates.

Meetings.

Legal actions.

Media campaigns.

At the bottom...

One appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Location:

Bennett Holdings Boardroom

Agenda:

Emergency Board Vote

Rachel frowned.

"A board meeting?"

Brooks zoomed in.

Another line appeared beneath it.

Approve Interim CEO following Margaret Bennett's resignation.

Emily blinked.

"Resignation?"

Frank looked confused.

"Why would Margaret resign now?"

Mitchell's eyes widened.

"Because she's preparing a scapegoat."

Everyone turned toward her.

"If Trevor believes we're closing in..."

"He'll sacrifice someone."

"Maybe himself."

"Maybe another executive."

"But Margaret is already planning the next move."

Just then, Brooks' forensic laptop emitted a soft beep.

"There's another encrypted partition."

He entered a recovery command.

A hidden video appeared.

Date:

Yesterday.

Emily frowned.

"Yesterday?"

Brooks pressed play.

Trevor sat alone inside this very archive.

Looking directly into the camera.

Almost as though he expected someone to find it.

He smiled.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then you finally opened the room."

He leaned forward.

"I imagine Detective Mitchell is standing beside you."

Mitchell's jaw tightened.

Trevor continued.

"I've always admired determined people."

His smile widened.

"But determination has a weakness."

Emily whispered,

"What weakness?"

As if answering her directly...

Trevor said,

"You become so focused on finding me..."

"...you forget to protect the people you love."

Emily's blood turned to ice.

Trevor glanced at his watch in the recording.

Then calmly spoke the sentence that froze everyone in the room.

"By the time you finish watching this..."

"...Frank Carter will already be dead."

The video ended.

For one horrifying second...

No one moved.

Then Frank's cell phone rang.

Every head turned toward it.

Frank looked at the screen.

His face lost all color.

The caller ID displayed only two words:

County Hospital.

He answered immediately.

"This is Frank Carter."

A nurse's frightened voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Your brother, Michael Carter, collapsed twenty minutes ago."

"We believe he was poisoned."

Frank's knees nearly buckled.

Emily caught him before he fell.

Mitchell stared at the silent screen where Trevor's face had disappeared.

He hadn't guessed.

He hadn't threatened.

He had known.

May you like

Because somewhere...

Trevor's plan was already unfolding.
