Chapter 14 — The Backup Trevor Never Knew About

The red warning spread across every monitor.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.

One by one, folders disappeared.

Emily felt her heart pounding against her ribs.

"No..."

Kevin slammed his hands across the keyboard.

"I'm locking the network!"

His fingers flew over the keys.

Lines of code flashed across the screen.

For several agonizing seconds, no one breathed.

Then—

The monitors went black.

Silence.

Only the emergency lights glowed overhead.

Kevin slowly leaned back in his chair.

His face had gone completely pale.

"They're gone."

Rachel whispered,

"Everything?"

Kevin nodded.

"The server's been wiped."

Frank cursed under his breath.

Emily stared at the blank screen.

Months of evidence.

Witness statements.

Videos.

Financial records.

Destroyed in less than a minute.

Trevor had struck again.

Detective Mitchell didn't panic.

She closed her eyes.

Counted silently to three.

Then turned to Kevin.

"Look at me."

He did.

"Did they erase the local drives?"

Kevin blinked.

"I..."

He immediately opened another terminal.

His fingers raced across the keyboard.

After nearly a minute, his expression changed.

"Wait."

"What?"

"The attack targeted the evidence server."

"What about your workstation?"

Kevin checked.

Then another.

Then another.

Suddenly—

A smile appeared.

"They didn't touch the isolated forensic computer."

Emily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Kevin looked at her.

"It means they destroyed the copies."

"But not the originals."

Mitchell finally smiled.

"They assumed everything was stored in one place."

Kevin nodded.

"But forensic procedure requires an offline image."

He reached into a locked cabinet.

Inside sat three encrypted hard drives.

Untouched.

Untouched because they had never been connected to the network.

Emily let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

"So we still have everything?"

Kevin smiled.

"Not everything."

"But enough."

Mitchell folded her arms.

"Can you trace the attack?"

Kevin connected another system.

"I'll try."

Within moments, lines of network activity appeared.

He frowned.

"They bounced through seven countries."

Emily sighed.

"So we'll never know."

Kevin shook his head.

"Professional hackers hide."

He zoomed in.

"But professionals don't usually make emotional mistakes."

Mitchell raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

Kevin enlarged the final connection.

"The last login happened..."

"...before the overseas routing."

He pointed to an IP address.

"It came from downtown."

Emily frowned.

"Our city?"

Kevin nodded.

"Less than two miles from here."

Mitchell looked thoughtful.

"Can you narrow it further?"

Kevin typed again.

After several seconds—

He stopped.

His expression slowly hardened.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"What?"

"The connection originated..."

He looked directly at Mitchell.

"...inside the District Attorney's Office."

The room fell silent.

Frank whispered,

"So there really is a leak."

Mitchell immediately picked up her phone.

She didn't call the District Attorney.

Instead, she dialed Internal Affairs.

Emily listened quietly.

"This is Detective Laura Mitchell."

"I need an independent cybercrime team."

"No."

"Not through the local prosecutor's office."

She glanced toward Emily.

"The case has been compromised."

An hour later, two cybercrime investigators arrived.

Special Agent Daniel Brooks examined Kevin's findings.

After twenty minutes, he nodded.

"The intrusion is real."

Emily asked,

"Can you identify who did it?"

Brooks shook his head.

"Not yet."

"But I can tell you something."

He pointed to the access log.

"Whoever logged in..."

"...used an employee security certificate."

Mitchell frowned.

"So it wasn't an outside hacker."

"No."

Brooks looked serious.

"It was someone authorized to enter the building."

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Trevor Bennett sat alone inside his office.

A glass of expensive whiskey rested untouched beside him.

His phone buzzed.

A text message appeared.

Server erased.

For several seconds, Trevor simply stared at it.

Then he smiled.

"Finally."

He stood and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

His reflection stared back at him.

Calm.

Collected.

Winning.

He pressed another number.

The call connected almost immediately.

His mother's voice answered.

"Is it finished?"

Trevor smiled.

"Every file."

Margaret Bennett sounded relieved.

"Good."

"There will be questions."

"There always are."

"And the detective?"

Trevor looked down at the city lights.

"She'll run out of evidence."

Margaret laughed softly.

"Just like the others."

Neither of them knew...

Their conversation wasn't private.

Earlier that afternoon...

Before leaving the forensic laboratory...

Kevin had quietly activated an emergency surveillance request.

Because the cyberattack had triggered a federal protocol.

Every incoming and outgoing call connected to the compromised network was automatically preserved for investigation.

The Bennetts had never heard of the protocol.

Neither had Emily.

But Special Agent Brooks had.

Late that evening...

He walked into Mitchell's office carrying a digital recorder.

"I think you should hear this."

He pressed Play.

Trevor's voice filled the room.

"Every file."

Margaret answered.

"Good."

Emily's eyes widened.

Mitchell leaned forward.

The recording continued.

Trevor laughed.

"Without evidence, they're finished."

Brooks stopped the playback.

"The recording is incomplete."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

"The interception started after the call connected."

Mitchell didn't care.

"It places them discussing the destruction of evidence."

Brooks nodded.

"It's enough to request warrants."

At exactly 8:40 p.m., Judge Eleanor Hayes reviewed Mitchell's affidavit.

Forty-three pages.

Evidence from Rachel.

Emily.

The recovered videos.

The cyberattack.

The intercepted call.

Judge Hayes signed two warrants.

One for Trevor Bennett's office.

One for Margaret Bennett's executive suite.

Mitchell looked at the signatures.

After months of dead ends...

They finally had legal authority.

Just after midnight...

Three unmarked police vehicles quietly surrounded Bennett Holdings.

The skyscraper stood almost completely dark.

Only the executive floor remained illuminated.

Mitchell whispered into her radio.

"Teams One and Two."

"Move."

Officers entered through the lobby.

Others secured the rear entrance.

A locksmith silently opened the executive offices.

Everything appeared undisturbed.

Until Officer Ramirez opened Trevor's private office.

He immediately froze.

"Detective..."

Mitchell hurried over.

"What is it?"

Ramirez pointed toward Trevor's desk.

Sitting neatly in the center...

As though someone had expected them...

Was a single sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Trevor's unmistakable handwriting, were four chilling words:

For Emily Carter Only.

Mitchell carefully slipped on latex gloves.

No one touched the envelope.

No one spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood the same terrifying truth.

Trevor had known the search warrant was coming.

May you like

And somehow...

He had been one step ahead of them again.
