Chapter 18 — The Woman Behind the Empire

The ICU doors slammed shut.

Doctors and nurses surrounded Michael Carter's bed.

Frank stood frozen in the hallway, staring through the glass.

Emily couldn't take her eyes off her uncle.

His final words echoed over and over inside her head.

"It... was... his mother."

Margaret Bennett.

Not Trevor.

Rachel whispered, "He wasn't confused."

Detective Laura Mitchell slowly nodded.

"No."

"Michael looked directly at Emily before he said it."

"He wanted us to hear those words."

An hour later...

Dr. Nathan Lewis stepped out of the ICU.

"The crisis has passed."

Frank rushed toward him.

"My brother?"

"He's stable."

"When can we talk to him?"

The doctor sighed.

"Not tonight."

"He's heavily sedated."

"But if everything goes well..."

"He should be able to speak tomorrow."

Emily released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

For the first time in days...

They had a living witness.

Back at the police station...

Mitchell pinned new photographs onto the investigation board.

At the top remained Trevor Bennett.

Beneath him—

Margaret Bennett.

For months Trevor had been the center of every theory.

Now the entire board shifted.

Mitchell stepped back.

"What if we've been looking at this backward?"

Agent Daniel Brooks folded his arms.

"What do you mean?"

"We assumed Trevor built the system."

She pointed toward the archive photographs.

"But every document began with Margaret."

"The influence."

"The political donations."

"The settlements."

"The private investigators."

Rachel looked at the wall.

"So Trevor inherited it."

Mitchell nodded.

"Not inherited."

"Taught."

Brooks opened the recovered Project Phoenix presentation again.

This time he ignored Trevor's name.

Instead, he searched for Margaret's.

Within seconds another encrypted folder appeared.

Hidden inside the presentation.

"There's more."

Mitchell frowned.

"I thought we searched everything."

"So did I."

Brooks entered another recovery command.

A spreadsheet opened.

Its title chilled everyone.

Legacy Program

Emily frowned.

"What is that?"

Brooks scrolled slowly.

The file listed names of dozens of women.

Beside each name appeared several categories.

Observation

Recruitment

Isolation

Compliance

Frank stared in disbelief.

"This wasn't Trevor."

Brooks nodded.

"This program began..."

He checked the oldest timestamp.

"...twenty-three years ago."

Rachel whispered,

"Before Trevor even graduated college."

Emily felt sick.

"This has been happening for decades."

Mitchell quietly answered,

"Yes."

"And Trevor wasn't the architect."

"He was the successor."

Just then...

Brooks enlarged another document.

It wasn't a spreadsheet.

It was an internal company memorandum.

Signed by Margaret Bennett herself.

'Every public family requires absolute reputation management.'

The next sentence made Emily's blood run cold.

'Personal relationships represent the greatest threat to legacy.'

Rachel looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Mitchell answered.

"It means..."

"...they viewed women as risks."

Not partners.

Not wives.

Risks.

Emily suddenly remembered something.

"The board meeting."

Mitchell looked up.

"Tomorrow morning."

"The emergency vote."

Brooks nodded.

"If Margaret resigns..."

"They'll appoint someone else."

Emily frowned.

"Trevor?"

Brooks shook his head.

"No."

He zoomed in on the meeting agenda.

One name appeared beneath the nomination.

Charles Bennett

Frank looked confused.

"I've never heard of him."

Mitchell's expression changed.

"Oh, no."

Rachel looked at her.

"You know him?"

"He's Margaret's younger brother."

Brooks immediately searched corporate records.

Within seconds his face hardened.

"Charles has controlled the Bennett Family Trust for fifteen years."

Emily whispered,

"So if Trevor falls..."

Mitchell finished the thought.

"The empire survives."

At 7:30 a.m.

Michael Carter finally opened his eyes.

Frank and Emily were already waiting.

Mitchell switched on a recorder.

"Michael..."

The older man managed a weak smile.

"You made it."

Frank squeezed his hand.

"You scared us."

Michael's eyes found Emily.

"I'm sorry."

Emily frowned.

"For what?"

"I should've warned you sooner."

Mitchell pulled up a chair.

"You said Margaret Bennett attacked you."

Michael nodded weakly.

"Tell us everything."

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then began.

"Three weeks ago..."

"...a woman came into my hardware store."

Emily listened carefully.

"Elegant."

"Expensive suit."

"Pearl necklace."

"She introduced herself as Margaret."

Frank looked shocked.

"My brother never met her before."

Michael nodded.

"She said she wanted to buy land."

"But she wasn't interested in land."

"She asked about Emily."

Emily's pulse quickened.

"What did she ask?"

"If you still visited."

"If you trusted Trevor."

"If Frank suspected anything."

Mitchell wrote every word.

"What did you tell her?"

"The truth."

"That Emily stopped visiting after she married."

"That Frank missed his daughter."

Emily felt tears filling her eyes.

Michael continued.

"Before she left..."

"...Margaret gave me her business card."

"I threw it away."

Frank frowned.

"Why?"

"Because something about her smile..."

He shivered.

"...didn't feel human."

Mitchell leaned forward.

"When did you see her again?"

Michael swallowed painfully.

"Yesterday."

"She came to the store just before closing."

Emily's breathing quickened.

"Alone?"

"No."

"There was a driver."

"What happened?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"She apologized."

"For disturbing me before."

"She handed me a bottle of water."

Frank whispered,

"The insulin..."

Michael nodded slowly.

"I remember drinking."

"After that..."

"Nothing."

Mitchell exchanged a glance with Brooks.

"So Trevor never visited."

Michael frowned.

"Trevor?"

"I've never saw Trevor."

Everyone looked at one another.

The hospital visitor log.

The surveillance footage.

The man wearing Trevor's clothes.

Emily suddenly understood.

"It was a disguise."

Brooks nodded.

"Someone dressed to look like Trevor."

Mitchell added,

"To make sure we'd blame him."

An officer rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

Mitchell turned.

"What is it?"

"The search warrant at Bennett Holdings."

"What about it?"

"We found Margaret Bennett's office empty."

"She left?"

"Yes."

"But..."

He handed Mitchell a printed flight manifest.

"Her private jet departed thirty minutes ago."

Emily's heart sank.

"Where is she going?"

The officer answered quietly.

"Switzerland."

Rachel whispered,

"She's running."

Brooks looked at the document.

Then frowned.

"Wait."

He pointed to the passenger list.

"There are only two names."

Margaret Bennett.

Charles Bennett.

Emily looked around the room.

"Trevor isn't with them."

Mitchell slowly lowered the manifest.

"No."

She suddenly realized something terrifying.

"If Margaret fled without Trevor..."

Frank looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Mitchell met Emily's eyes.

"It means Trevor isn't escaping."

"He's staying."

Emily's voice trembled.

"Why?"

Mitchell's answer was barely above a whisper.

"Because he still has one unfinished job."

At that exact moment, Emily's prepaid phone vibrated.

One new message.

No number.

No photograph.

Only seven words.

Meet me alone, or your father dies.

Beneath the message was a location.

The old Carter family farmhouse.

The place where Emily had grown up.

May you like

The place Trevor had never visited.

Or so she had believed.
