Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM WITHOUT A KING

The emergency board meeting began at eight the next morning.

Richard entered expecting to fight Michael.

He did not expect Willow.

She sat beside her father.

Ice-blue bruising still faintly shadowed her cheek.

Richard looked at her.

“You don’t belong in this meeting.”

Willow almost smiled.

The sentence had followed her for five years.

You don’t belong.

At the dinners.

The galas.

The company retreat.

The family Christmas.

Now it sounded small.

Michael pulled out the chair beside him.

“She belongs wherever I say my successor belongs.”

Every director looked at Willow.

Richard’s expression changed.

“Successor?”

Michael sat.

“I designated Willow this morning.”

Lucas, seated farther down the table, looked stunned.

“Dad never told me—”

Richard snapped,

“Be quiet.”

Lucas stared at him.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he did not obey immediately.

Evelyn distributed certified documents.

The Donovan Founders Trust had activated its conversion rights.

Dormant beneficial interests became voting shares.

Fifty-one percent.

Effective immediately.

Richard’s attorney objected.

Evelyn cited Section Eleven.

He argued waiver.

She produced the 2004 amendment.

He claimed estoppel.

She produced Richard’s own signed acknowledgment from 2012.

For twenty minutes, Richard’s lawyers discovered that Michael Donovan had spent decades appearing absent while carefully preserving every right.

Richard looked across the table.

“You planned for this.”

Michael replied,

“I planned for you.”

Evelyn presented the motion.

Suspend Richard Sterling as chairman pending forensic investigation.

Richard laughed.

“This is personal retaliation because Lucas had an argument with his wife.”

Willow’s jaw tightened.

Michael remained calm.

“You are correct that my daughter’s assault caused me to activate rights I had previously declined to use.”

Richard smiled triumphantly.

“There.”

“But that is not the basis for your suspension.”

Michael nodded toward Daniel.

A screen illuminated.

Twenty-seven shell entities.

Four hundred eighty-three million dollars in suspicious transfers.

Insurance proceeds.

Pension collateral.

Donovan Heritage Holdings.

Richard’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“We have identified substantial evidence of unauthorized diversion.”

A director whispered,

“Four hundred million?”

“Preliminary.”

Daniel replied.

“It may be higher.”

Richard slammed one hand on the table.

“This is fabricated.”

Amanda Vale entered.

Every Sterling turned.

Lucas whispered,

“Amanda?”

She took a seat behind Evelyn.

“I preserved copies seven years ago.”

Richard stared.

“You signed an agreement.”

Amanda replied,

“An agreement obtained through coercion does not immunize financial crimes.”

The room became silent.

The vote was called.

Nine for suspension.

Three against.

Richard Sterling lost the chairmanship.

His first defeat came not with shouting.

Not with handcuffs.

Not with cameras.

Just nine quiet voices saying yes.

Security approached.

Richard stood.

He buttoned his jacket.

Then looked at Michael.

“You think Claire would be proud of this?”

Michael did not move.

Richard smiled.

“I knew her better at the end than you did.”

Willow stood.

“My mother knew exactly what you were.”

Richard looked at her.

“And what are you?”

Willow thought about the ballroom.

The laughter.

Her father’s garage.

Claire’s tape.

“A woman you should have left alone.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

He walked out.

Lucas remained seated.

His father did not look back for him.

Willow noticed.

So did Lucas.

For the first time, Lucas Sterling understood what his father’s love was actually worth.

Nothing.
